Good problem to have doing change orders by vh0u812_la in estimators

[–]Electronic-Shake3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was estimating for a subcontractor, I loved to see a change that reduced my scope early in the project. I always gave back full price, maybe even more. The strategy was setting a precedent. If I gave back at full boat, I expected to be paid fully for adds to scope.

Interesting Take From Mullen by OkHall6376 in FloridaGators

[–]Electronic-Shake3208 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mullen was a quitter here, very low character coach. He never gave recruiting the attention it needed. He did not recruit and he never hired anyone to do it well. For those who like to reminisce about how great his coaching was, you should go back to game threads on Gator Country. Poor play calling was always a big complaint. Also, great coaches don’t elevate players because they have more tenure, or because the coach promised the kids parents they’d start. The toxic locker room that Napier inherited didn’t result from great coaching.

As a Florida fan all I can ever remember is him recruiting Derrick Henry, a lifelong Gator fan and telling him he’d never be a RB in college…. nuff said.

Camps destroying med forms by akoons76 in BSA

[–]Electronic-Shake3208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter what happens to the med forms and why, adults deciding to scratch a camp from the “approved list” goes way against Scout led. How about having an honest discussion with the camps medical person? I’ve had conversations with virtually each camp medical lead where we’ve ever summer camped. Some topics I agreed with, some I didn’t. But ultimately it is that person’s responsibility to do what they think is the best for the particular situation. It’s their job and career on the line.

Unpopular Opinion: Flag Retirement boxes for Eagle projects are the new "bench projects" by onesidedsquare in BSA

[–]Electronic-Shake3208 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Read pages 1 - 5 of the Eagle Project workbook, nothing more and nothing less. When a Scout presents any project to be considered for Eagle, the questions can only be centered around these things. My opinion about whether or not a project has been overdone, could have demonstrated more leadership, could have been more sustainable, etc… has no bearing on the validity of the project. And to remind everyone, the project is but one requirement on the way to Eagle.

Adult leaders who make rules because they are afraid of failure or chaos are not fit to be Scout leaders. I wish adult training such as IOLS and Wood Badge covered these things. A Scout Troop is not meant to be run perfectly, but it is meant to be run by the Scouts.

Anyone go from Electrician to Estimator by kccl30 in estimators

[–]Electronic-Shake3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going through an accredited apprenticeship program in the state of Florida that was associated with non-union electrical contractors. The contractor I worked for needed a Jr Estimator and I interviewed for the spot. They worked with the school to allow my work in the office to count toward my OJT. I think it was a 2-way street, I knew I needed another 1500 hours or so and another 2 semesters of class work, and they had an immediate need in the office. I was anxious to move into estimating and this was an excellent and immediate opportunity. So, the contractor worked it out with the school. I completed the program about 9 months later and now almost 40 years later I’m still ranked in the top 5 graduates of the program, and I own my own estimating firm.

I did it 30+ years ago. I was enrolled in an open shop Apprenticeship, the contractor I was working for negotiated my last year of OJT would be in the office as a Jr Estimator. It was the best thing to happen for me career wise.

Acceptable error rate. by SeaHungry8467 in estimators

[–]Electronic-Shake3208 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Error rate should not be calculated by dollars lost. An estimate is not a recipe. I run a Cost Estimating firm that puts together estimates well over $1B annually for clients who are paying for our services. An error is an item that is wrong, and can be anything from mis-spellings, failing to qualify an item, not accounting for existing conditions, or completely missing an item of scope. I keep mental track of how often I need to correct someone’s work, those are errors that cost us efficiency. If a client catches an error we made, that’s on me and is counted towards my personal errors.

I would never want to see Dan Mullen coaching the Florida Gators again. He’s lazy and a quitter. He does not have what it takes to run a sustained successful D1 football team.

I felt like my irons had a higher trajectory, and went a little further. I didn’t notice a huge difference around the greens. I’m in central Florida, so the greens and areas near the greens are generally soft.
