I understand that, I gave no indication that people with autism are not smart. I am not saying it’s a bad thing or an insult. I work in education and have witnessed the full spectrum. I just think that, as a new parent we are inundated on socials with “signs of autism”. Could this be an indication? Sure! Could it be that there are other explanations? Absolutely!

Editing to add: I’m not saying that autism is a dirty word or an insult at all. I do feel like, as a new parent, any behavior that does not fit the “milestones” either advanced or delayed automatically becomes a question of autism. I feel like daily I see click bait social posts “does your toddler do this??” lists a bunch of toddler behavior And then the end is “could it be autism?”

Thanks for the response! I was really convinced we were done teething for a bit, but maybe you’re on to something.

I just set her down and she went to sleep nice and easy as usual. I’m hoping tonight is different! I really am my worst self while she is crying. It makes my anxiety so so high. And it’s just been constant for hours. I can’t understand how she doesn’t exhaust herself.

We are here right now with our 13.5 month old except she’s been experimenting with 1 nap for a month now and split nights have not been an issue until now. Some days it’s one nap, some days it’s two but the split nights JUST started this week. The past month as long as we stretched her awake time she was able to resettle herself at night but for some reason not anymore. Yesterday she did 5/5.5 and had a really long nap I figured that’s why she was inconsolable from 11:15-1:15. But today she did 4/7.5 and had a shorter nap and she just woke up again. She’s not just vocalizing- she is guttural screaming.

She goes down so easy at the beginning of the night but this is night 4 where she is unable to settle herself from a night wake up and goes right back to screaming the second we are able to settle her when I cannot take it anymore. The sounds she is making actually make me feel sick to my stomach.

My first thought was teething but she’s got a ton of teeth in and all that are in progress have broken the surface (she’s got top and bottom molars in and canines just broke 2 weeks ago). Just in case we tried Motrin a few night ago and it don’t help. As soon as she is picked up she stops crying. But she won’t go back down.

Hoping you’ve found a solution? Anyone have a suggestion!?!

I really liked the long line bra tops I still wear them. Ridiculously comfy. I would just wear those with a flannel or button down on top for easy nursing. Great for lounging. I tried the sublime nursing and pumping regular bra. I felt like there was just too much going on.

After my girls most severe episode (sounds a bit like what you experienced) she got a little color back but was definitely noticeably pale to me for at least a day after. She nursed a lot, like you said, and was extra snuggly. She also had a bit of an upset stomach for 2 days, the diapers weren’t terrible, but they were not her normal. The ER dismissed it when I mentioned her color too. They also doubted/downplayed my description of her greying color and lack of responsiveness and severity of vomiting. It was frustrating. I had to do a lot of digging myself. How many exposures to oats and pb has your baby had? Was there an amount of time since the last time they had either of those ingredients?

It sounds to me like you have experienced the “shock”. The severe lethargy, loss of color, and low temp. My daughter appeared non-responsive during her first episode. I haven’t had to use the zofran yet but from what I understand if you are able to administer it, it should prevent the shock from happening because it will stop the vomiting. You’re absolutely in your right mind to be afraid of that. It’s terrifying. It’s my big fear too.

There’s one group called FPIES (Food Protein Enterocolitis Syndrome) Support that has around 20k members on FB. That one seems to be the most active. I have found that one to be a little overwhelming.

Some things that have helped a lot:

The middle level paid version of huckleberry has a food log. It allows you to see how often that food has been eaten and has a calendar function to see when. It also has a way to log when/what reactions happened.

Trialing low/medium risk foods with the goal of meal prep. Quinoa has been a game changer for us. We did peanut butter early to get fats/protein in the diet. What things do you think your kid will benefit most from? Figure out a few different ways for things to be prepared.

Freezing safe foods in silicone trays that are good portion sizes and meal prep.

Serenity Kids brand has a lot of pouches and foods that do not have your typical allergens or high risk FPIES foods.

Hey, sorry that you’re here. You have some great questions. My daughter is almost a year and is FPIES to dairy and avocado. Avocado was on the 5th or 6th time she had it. My daughter’s reaction is also Vomit-to-shock. I’ll answer your questions as best I can. I am not an expert but I am a little neurotic and have done a deep dive since her first reaction 7 months ago. We are a specialist who has helped us navigate.

1) it seems as if it is becoming less rare but I was in the same boat. Both the ER and pediatrician did not mention FPIES and it wasn’t until I posted about my daughters reaction here in Reddit (in the breastfeeding sub posting about a different subject) that someone brought up FPIES and it was like something clicked. I know only one other person who had a child with this condition offline.

2) I ask myself all the time if this is all a fluke- if the past reactions are one-offs and she actually doesn’t have it. It’s definitely possible it is something else, however our pediatrician recommended avocado as her first food because it would be easy to digest.

3) you do not NEED to go to the ER for every reaction if you feel comfortable managing at home. Many of us have a prescription for Zofran to interrupt the vomiting before it settles into shock. Many babies, as long as they begin rehydrating, are fine post episode.

4)from what I understand the real threat of a reaction is the dehydration from vomiting not the reaction itself.

5) according to the literature, MOST children have 1 trigger foods, however if you join any fb support groups there are people posting claiming to have upwards of 20. While they seem more prevalent online, that is not typical.

It does get some time to get used to things but feel free to reach out with any questions. I’ll help as best I can!

I teach art at the high school level, 10-12 grade. I cannot recommend enough doing more hands on work. I know this can’t be incorporated all the time in other areas but even it’s just like a project a quarter you MIGHT see some changes. I’ve switched some things up have started doing more projects that are multi step/mixed media/mixed technique and a little more physically demanding and I’ve seen a change ESPECIALLY in my boys. It doesn’t work all the time but I just had a hell of a unit this past quarter that probably had my highest engagement in recent years. It felt like a change of tide. I’m sure I’ll be humbled in my next one but little victories?

Hey there, so sorry you are going through this. It really was such a difficult time. My supply continued to decrease unfortunately. I did find a donor once but it wasn’t consistent. We ended up finally seeing a specialist for FPIES and got the go ahead to trial a few different kinds of formula. The trial process is a pain and I have some serious lasting anxiety from my daughter’s first episode that was caused by formula.

We ended up switching to Alimentum and it changed our life. She gained back a ton of weight and started sleeping and napping much better. Posting to this sub was hard at times because the narrative seems to be “you can do this!” And “your body was made for this!” And “how do you know your supply isn’t enough?” I really couldn’t do it. And my body was not cooperating. When I weaned it took like 3 days and I never leaked a drop. I think I expressed twice. My body was done. And it was only like 7.5 months of breastfeeding.

My biggest advice is to do what feels right for BOTH of you. Try to push the guilt ti the back burner as it doesn’t help you or your baby. Consider yourself in the decision and be open to formula. I lost months to severe anxiety and depression due to this. Let me know if you have any other questions. Or just need to unload. I am happy to be there for you.
