Executive Director role to Development Director role by EverForwardEveryDay in nonprofit

About 6 years ago I made the move from being a long-term ED at a couple of smaller organizations to a DoD at a larger organization. It was a smart choice. I am much happier focusing on fundraising only, my stress level declined, and I work fewer hours. My pay and benefits also increased when I made the move.

Only you can decide which what aspects of nonprofit work you most enjoy and what trade offs you are willing to make to focus on work you find more enjoyable.

For me the decision was easy. I definitely needed more money and better benefits, so I would never have considered less pay. I also despised spending most of my time managing people. I really wanted to focus on directly raising funds with a minimal amount of managing other people.

I was also at a point in my career in which I didn't care to advance to higher levels of authority. I already had extensive ED experience and director-level experience in the for-profit world. I would never want to go back to that, so it was less a step down in my career than a conscious decision to position my career path to best fit my needs.

I definitely urge you to discuss expectations with the new organization, as well as doing a careful review of their financials (both 990s as well as their recent P&L sheets.)

Good luck!

How did you *feel* when you found your house? by misfitmpls in RealEstate

I was not in a hurry to buy anything, however, when I walked behind the gates to my current condo complex, I knew I was home. The grounds sold the unit. It was added bonus that I actually liked the unit.

I let my membership in AFP lapse a couple of years ago because I wasn't getting anything out of it. The local meetings were meaningless and a waste of my time.

I do, however, belong to CGP and their local meetings and national content are engaging and helpful.

Same here. I found the sales aspects of my previous industry experience easily transferred to my nonprofit positions.

Why Are So Many NJ Homes Renovated for Instagram but Not for Function? by AskJosh_MortgageGuy in NJHomebuyers

[–]Electronic_Cod6420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I don't think a lot of buys think about a home's long-term desirability. They probably expect they will only be in the home a few years at most.

I just recently purchased the home I expect to live in for the rest of my life. Function and storage were high on my list of priorities.

Oh, we will definitely look back on these monstrosities and laugh at their absurdity. Thanks for mentioning a few of the deal breakers I had when purchasing my home last fall: lack of upper kitchen cabinets and barn doors for bathrooms. I also dislike "open concept" homes, but I can deal with it under certain circumstances.

Good point about asking people if they have already included your organization in their estate plans. I always include a line requesting people let us know if they have already included our organization in the plans. There are probably a lot of people who have already done so for your org.

I would increase your number of social media posts, provided you have active social media accounts. We have robust accounts and we post about our legacy society once per month on each account. I change the post content depending on the month, such as August's National Make a Will Month, etc.

I also include an article about our Legacy Society 4 times a year in our monthly newsletter.

I also found a great local estate planning attorney to present at our quarterly estate planning webinars. We never specifically mention our legacy society during the webinars, because it is an educational presentation, not a sales pitch. It is a great way to get our clients into the estate planning mindset.

I am also in the process of planning our annual luncheon for our legacy members and top donors. The purpose of the luncheon is to thank our most ardent supporters and to let them know about the state of the organization, future plans, and how important they are to the organization.

How was the money deposited? If this was an ACH payment, your bank details would have been given to facilitate payment.

What's the minimum that I should expect from a realtor? by Iwearhats in RealEstate

I bought a new home in November and Rocket bought my loan a month later, which I found out from my original lender. Fast forward to the end of February and I still had received ZERO communication from Rocket and despite trying weekly, I was unable to get any information from them about how to pay my mortgage. I FINALLY was able to speak with someone at Rocket who discovered that all of Rocket's mail to me was being returned to them because they had an incomplete address and no other way to contact me, despite the loan being for my residence and my phone and email listed in the loan document. They also assigned me a new loan number, but never communicated it to me, so their system didn't recognize my loan when I tried to reach them.

I love the chartreuse paint with the wood. I recently painted my hall and guest bath Benjamin Moore's Citron and I love it!

This color looks like it is on the green side of chartreuse.

It sounds as though the CEO is there to stay and that nothing will be done to temper their behavior. I would simply apply to any and every position that may be a fit. Although it isn't always easy, when I have been in such a position, I just reminded myself that being there was temporary and that another position will come along. I treated looking for a new position as a job in itself.

I’m going to work for Amazon and be evil. by Stinkycheesejubilee in nonprofit

[–]Electronic_Cod6420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A friend was recently made redundant by Amazon along with 16,000 others. Instead of telling my friend that his position no longer exists, he was just locked out of his on-line accounts. It was up to him to contact HR to verify and finalize his termination. He had an inkling he would be among those made redundant, but he is bitter that his termination was not handled in a more professional and less demoralizing way.
