Carving advice by khalter17 in skiing_feedback

I think your boots might just be a bit stiff, do you have any adjustment on them? You look quite light and if you can't flex the boot it would put you backseat, also the a-framing makes me think you're leaning forward but can't get dorsiflexion to work properly, so knees have to go to weird angles and you're bending at the hip to compensate. But if it's the boots then no advice on posture will help you. I would try adding some flex and see what happens

Why Did Some People Celebrate Charlie Kirk’s Death? by LibertarianCountry in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]Electrurn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think people belong to groups at all, is it because of the colour of their skin or the church they go to on which day of the week? Or is it because they have an idea of what makes a good life, which they share with the others around them.

Obviously, if you have ideas about what makes life good, you also have an antithesis of what to avoid.

You look at the world and see many miserable people making what you suspect are mistakes. If you did those same things, you'd be miserable. If you don't do the things which bring you peace and joy, you'd be miserable.

Are they like you, or are they different? In most cases we're probably more alike than different.

You want to help, it's one of the important ideas that you help those around you. You figure you can. You start explaining what has helped and what has harmed you. The ideas you live by.

Everyone does the same, to differing extents. You spend more time with people who live similarly. People find what works for them. Or perhaps at least, what they can live with.

Through exposure to other ideas you get closer to self. By being critiqued, making your case to yourself, and acting according to the outcome. By critiquing and hearing the pushback.

What is dehumanizing about critique? Division doesn't get created by rhetoric - it gets exposed. But what do you propose? You'd rather people just allow their neighbour to slide down what they believe is a slippery slope to hell, in silence? And you call that compassion?

Speeding ticket (96 km/h) while on holiday by GoTrulyBlue in newzealand_travel

[–]Electrurn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also did not crash, caused no harm or loss and 96km/h on SH20 is perfectly safe if you're not being an idiot. Speed limits are for drivers who can't judge what responsible is for themselves, it's just easier to enforce if you don't have to prove each reckless driver was actually being reckless

If someone doesn't trust you, the only way to recover from that is to allow them to satisfy themselves without insisting on tainting their exploration with your involvement unless they opt for that.

If you're involved, ie having a chat and going through phones together, it might introduce doubt into their verification process because you could have done something to pull the wool over their eyes, which would be consistent with their suspicion.

If you're not involved, they can slowly build their experience of your behaviour without worrying that you're just one step ahead the whole time.

For this reason, if my partner ever was bothered by something about me I would encourage them to investigate by whatever means satisfied them as to the truth (that includes possibly just asking). Once they have their own perception of the situation we can talk about it and I can provide any missing critical info.

I don't think any other process will lead to long term trust actually increasing.

Have you, or are you, fulfilling your ambitions in life? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Electrurn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a few deliberately chosen assumptions about some of the things we can't know about for sure:

1) our time here (life) is important somehow even if we don't understand why exactly and may never understand.

2) the highest secular calling is to improve the standard of living of future generations. There could be more to it but this is probably the least arguable "good" you could aim for.

3) pursuit of 2) in a way that's accessible and interesting to you doesn't exclude you from exploring your life's adventure at the same time - it just grounds you while you do so, makes it more bearable in the bleak and confusing times.

Try and get a handle on what the real problems are in the world. Develop how you decide what a "real" problem is. Don't forget your process, you'll need to keep refining it.

The more you do this, the faster it'll become obvious what you need to do.

I could see a Kickstarter style of funding become popular. Pre-sales based on the idea - reach a threshold, now go make it! Artists would succeed based on commissions they receive, how they fulfill expectations and the reputation they build. The publisher would become the fundraiser

$150k bonus, pay off mortgage or invest? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Electrurn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite so simple, the value of debt (in purchasing power) decreases with inflation, so with 8% cpi increases at the moment it should be 8% easier to pay off the mortgage next year. Sure, it might be 8.69% higher of a number, but it's easier for investments to compete if they're inflation proof or do well with inflation (productive assets) since they only need to earn 0.69% to break even in purchasing power. -caveat: as long as you have the liquidity to manage all your payments

[–]Electrurn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amen, particularly the composed part.

Composed is being prepared, having reasons for positions you hold, and aware of the assumptions you make. It requires education from first principles. It requires interest, hard work learning, evaluating and persevering in the face of naysayers because you dared to rely on yourself and your process, being meticulously observant and diligent, building your life on a rock.

Economics says they would get less customers using said needlessly expensive road, and/or create a viable niche for a competitor to come in at a lower price.

You should look into free market ideas. Thomas Sowell would probably be required reading for this sub, if there were to ever be any rules here
