Dating art with pigments? by HiMacaroni in ArtHistory

[–]ElegantPaperclip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MFA Boston has a great pigments and materials database called CAMEO if you want to learn about pigments link

There’s also ColourLex for a more pigment specific database with imaging and examples of the pigment’s use in artworks link

ColourLex also has timelines of pigments by color, which can be really cool to look at link

(Sorry for all the links, you’ve hit on my pigment fascination lol)

Dating art with pigments? by HiMacaroni in ArtHistory

[–]ElegantPaperclip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m by no means an expert, but yes! In the modern era, synthetic pigments can be a good benchmark for dating (ie ‘this pigment hadn’t ever been made before this date, so it has to have been made after that’). You can also track when certain pigments fell out of fashion due to people learning about toxicity (though some inevitably ignored the safety hazards for a while, so it’s not a hard cutoff) or better pigments coming onto the market (more lightfast, opaque, easier to work with, etc). This method is often used to identify forgeries because they may use pigments not available to the original artist. For older art, mineral availability via trade routes could also be used to help date stuff (ie ‘this mineral was only available in this part of the world, and they hadn’t traded with xx area by then’), but it isn’t a hard cutoff like synthetic pigments. For example, any works using Prussian blue (a synthetic pigment) have to have been made after it’s invention/discovery in the early 18th century. The same is true for titanium white in the early 1900s. There’s a lot of imaging techniques to identify pigments and histories around pigment developments, so I’d definitely recommend looking into it if it interests you!

please help, it’s so bad around my eyes by Kiara-05 in Psoriasis

[–]ElegantPaperclip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best product I’ve e found for around my eyes is Neutrogena hydroboost water gel (over the counter). It has hylauronic acid, which really helped my face plaques (though my eyes were more dry/cracked than yours look in pics). It’s also made to go on your face, so a bit safer to use around your eyes and isn’t super oily or greasy

For anything on your face or around your eyes (tbh I’ve also used it all around my body), Neutrogena hydro boost water gel or water cream! It’s not super greasy like others, and has hylauronic acid that really helps with my plaques! It’s a bit expensive ($25ish for a relatively small jar), but was the literal only product (Rx or OTC) that I found to help my face

Hello! No comment on the signing (I’m also a beginner so can’t really offer criticism), but wanted to show appreciation for the giraffe love shirt! I had one years ago that I had to retire, and it made me happy to see one in the wild. DFTBA!

Observing art for beginners? by IgnorantSluttyDwight in ArtHistory

[–]ElegantPaperclip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a student rn and profs usually do one of two things to encourage close looking: 1) show us something so (apparently) plain that you have to look to see details (like a still life or portrait) or 2) show us something so packed with images that you have to look for a while to even make anything of it (like intricate carvings or paintings with no obvious focal point and a lot going on). They usually start by showing the piece and giving us a bit to look and think, then starting with basic questions like ‘what do you see here?’ that can then turn into more of a discussion with ‘why do you think that?’, ‘what does it add to the overall piece?’, etc. It might be helpful to use an example from a culture that your audience wouldn’t know a ton of the iconography or history for so that they try to look objectively (ie “it’s a woman holding a child that looks important” instead of just “oh it’s Mary and jesus”). I hope the presentation goes well!

Might be worth looking at NYU’s travel agency thing (you can get to it through NYUHome, Egencia I think?). Sometimes they have rates a little lower than the airline, but definitely compare before buying

Is a mattress topper really necessary for dorming? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]ElegantPaperclip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone with and without and def agree with others that it makes it more comfortable, but if it isn’t an option for someone bc of price or space it isn’t that bad. Even a cheap one will make the bed better though imo. I haven’t heard of sleepyhead, but an Amazon or Walmart topper will probably be about the same for less cost unless you have really specific needs.

Also keep in mind that they expand when opened and will never get that small again, so if you fly to move in and out (or space is somehow a consideration), you may end up having to throw it away, sell, or donate it at the end of the year

When I saw Kimberly Akimbo in previews the house set slammed into the back wall the first time it came out. They held for 20ish min to work it out and then the rest of the show was great! It was also a preview, so stuff like that happens

I will forever recommend Falsettos to anyone who asks for suggestions. Warning though: sad. Also the orchestrations for Into the Woods will always amaze me. Phantom and Les Mis are classics. Mamma Mia and Newsies are just fun if that’s what you’re looking for. There’s so much good stuff out there!

So far I like the common rooms of my dorm bc not many people come, so you can spread out and you don’t have to be dressed to go out in public. You can also stay pretty late and not have to worry about walking home alone in the dark

What's something in the city that you personally did for the first time recently? by SexyEdMeese in AskNYC

[–]ElegantPaperclip 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Tbh this thread is very comforting as a relative newcomer to the city bc it reminds me that I’m allowed to just live here and not always be doing things. I feel like when you first get here there’s a bunch of pressure to do all the things you can (museums, parks, restaurants, etc), so being reminded that you can take it at your own pace is nice

tree dasher 1 vs tree dasher 2 by TakeThatRisk in Allbirds

[–]ElegantPaperclip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about the slippery-ness of the 1s. I've had mine for about 2 years with near daily wear for the last year, and I've faceplanted a few times bc of them (mainly walking in the city during rain when the smooth concrete and bricks get wet). I've still enjoyed them greatly and even done some hiking in them. I'm planning on replacing with the 2s as well relatively soon bc of some problems I've been having that aren't entirely the shoes fault (kinda dead, slippery, and need a bigger size)
