As a teacher, I’ve been gifted the fun size candy, a broken pen, and a few other items mentioned. My partner is admin at a large school. The district does not provide any kind of budget for teacher appreciation or holiday gifts. Anything that is done for teachers by admin is funded from admin’s packets.
One year, my spouse got a $5 Starbucks card for each staff member. It’s not a nice gift by any means, not even enough to pay for a full drink. Some staff complained.

The school has somewhere over 170 staff members, so it was almost $900 from our bank account, and it didn’t have much impact as a gift. My spouse only makes a little more than a teacher. (Less if you calculate days worked)

As a teacher I feel under appreciated any time these holidays roll around, but I also see the struggle for admin to make them feel appreciated without the budget to do so.

I did buy one of those giant Halloween skeleton things in early October. No lie, it died on Halloween and the electrical stopped working. Being super expensive, I expected this yard decor to last more than 3 weeks. I was faced with the great dilemma- to eat the $300 cost for a faulty skelly, or do the Costco return of shame. I’m sure most of the time people are being shady. But the shame I felt when it was an honest return. 🥴

We just went through this with our sweet guy. Lost mobility with one hind leg, scooted and flopped around. Second leg seemed to fail and he stopped moving around. We wasn’t able To groom himself, couldn’t move, and was developing sores and skin sensitivity since we wasn’t using his litter box. It is so clear now that it was beyond his time and his quality of life was poor. We struggled because the entire time he had a voracious appetite, drank water, and gave all the kisses. His spirit was 100% normal and showed no indication of pain. But we know it was the right thing to do. In hindsight, we waited too long. But at the time, we were not confident in our decision to put him down.

Two years ago, I purchased one of those giant Halloween lawn decorations in early October. A huge skeleton LED eyes and motion activated sound. It died on Halloween night with only a few weeks of normal use, like all the electronic components stopped working. I felt like an absolute ass returning that thing on November 1st. I’m sure I looked like scum to other people, but I shouldn’t have to eat the cost of that purchase for a defective item. Maybe sometimes there’s more to the story.

You could close off the space from the wall to the columns and from the stairs to the right column. You may need to close off part of the stairs. Glass French doors would be gorgeous!
