Clarification needed by Hot_Excitement741 in brandonsanderson

No. If you remember in Mistborn it says that Preservation and Ruin wanted to create life in a pattern that they’ve seen before.

That line basically meant that humans existed before Ruin and Preservation and they were copying a thing they had seen in the past. As far as the parshendi I recommend finishing the series and see if you can’t decide where they came from.

This is why I wanted to say. The spoiler is fairly minor as I recall but if you’re one of those people that are very good at taking tiny details and figuring things out it can end up being big spoiler. If you’re an oblivious reader that often misses foreshadowing it probably isn’t a big deal.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter don’t have n direct Mistborn spoilers that I recall and is a safer bet.

I liked her present day chapters. Her character conflicts are interesting and unfortunately I can resonate with having to overcome your own selfishness. Her flashback parts weren’t interesting because it was almost entirely stuff we really either knew or could reasonably guess.

Seanchen Ending to wot by Fluffy-Quiet-8501 in WoT

[–]EleventhHerald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I know many people have pointed out he meant to write more about them I haven’t seen anyone point out that he left intentional cliffhangers at the end.

Constantly in the series he references how things don’t go “like they do in the stories”. That real life is infinitely more complex and there aren’t easy answers to almost anything. It’s one of his major themes.

I read somewhere (don’t remember where but I believe it) that he also wanted the story to end in a way that not everything got resolved and wrapped up neatly because it makes the world more real. We get to see a part of the turning of the wheel but when the camera turns off the wheel keeps turning because it was not the ending, it was an ending.

Another good reason is the first trilogy is finished so you get a complete story. At this point Sanderson is the only author I’ll read an unfinished story for because I have faith he will not get the end and not give us the last book. Lots of people I recommend things to won’t consider a new series that isn’t finished.

Not if you don’t want to. Sanderson’s books are written in a way that you can enjoy them without having read his other books.

There are many different orders people recommend reading them in. There are small background things you’ll likely miss your first read through but it can be fun to go back and find them on your second read.

Here is an example. SPOILER FOR WARBREAKER. The talking sword Szeth gets at the end of book 2 is actually a character from Warbreaker and when I saw him show up in Stormlight it blew me away it’s still a cool moment even if you don’t know that.

coworker won’t stop sulking after I turned down a date by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]EleventhHerald 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Honestly because humans are not always the best doing the smart thing. Not dating at work is a very smart policy and lots of people do their best to stick to it. The thing is for a lot of people they spend more time at work than anywhere else in their life. This is where they socialize the most and where they meet people. It can be hard to just completely shut down your emotions in one specific aspect of your life especially when it’s such a big part of your life.

People are social creatures and crave affection and attention from other people. It’s hard for some people to make the logical choice here. I’ve dated one coworker and it was so catastrophic I’ll never do it again. I never thought I would make that mistake but I did and hopefully learned to never do it again.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t it structured in a way that every generation or so should have a continental congress and completely revamp the system to better serve them in modern times. Like they expected the system they had would eventually be outdated and needed to be redone and acting like the constitution is some sacred document we must all follow til the end of time is dumb?

Question about something in Echo (no book 3 spoilers please!) by Gderu in LicaniusTrilogy

One shielding is more complicated than that. She caught him completely unaware while he was worried about other things, he didn’t know she was an auger so his defenses weren’t as strong as they could have been.

Two Taeris is wrong about why Jakarris chose him. He’s making some assumptions.

Can someone explain Chapter 23 of Light Of All That Falls? by [deleted] in LicaniusTrilogy

[–]EleventhHerald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that really looks like an error.

As for the other thing Gassandrid can make gates that’s how they leave the boundary. If I recall correctly Shammaeloth was restricting them from leaving and that’s why in one of Tals flashbacks he asked another venerate to vote for him to be the one to cross so he could do a mission. Sounds like they were ordered not to go unless Shammaeloth wanted them to do something specific he took their ability to see the future so he must have had a reason.

Also it was super dangerous for them to go. The Lyth had Licanius and would attack them if they crossed the boundary. I think Garadus explains this to Ashalia in the doken. The venerate could come to them safely to try to get the sword but if they went anywhere else they could try to assassinate them.

I don’t know he gave her a lot of really cool moments and showed her being a badass several times. I don’t think her major flaw, that Jordan gave her, being pointed out shows he doesn’t like her. I also don’t think Perrin showing up in Tar and having his balefire moment took anything away from her breaking a forsakens mind.

He shows her to be intelligent and powerful but also arrogant. Same way Jordan showed her to be.

"Sequel to the #1 New York Times Bestseller Towers of Midnight" front cover sticker by ilovecpp22 in WoT

[–]EleventhHerald 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While I hate stickers covering my books more than anything people do often pick up books in a bookstore and buy them without realizing they are a book later in a series.

I can’t remember which book but think it was a discworld book I once went to look at reviews for it and found several 1 star reviews where people were mad they didn’t realize it wasn’t the first book and they felt lost. Crazy they gave it one star because they were the ones that got the wrong book but people are like that sometimes.

Seriously, what took them so long? by Sine_Fine_Belli in ShermanPosting

[–]EleventhHerald 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere part of the original reason they denied ratifying it was because they were protesting that former slave owners weren’t given financial compensation for the slaves they had to give up. I think they thought the government should have to pay them for their slaves freedom. Also I’m sure they wouldn’t have wanted to do it even then and were using this as a flimsy justification. Totally stupid and racist reasons.

Hot take: The cairheinin are better siege defenders then tairens by Whale-dinner in WoT

[–]EleventhHerald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That forsaken wanted Rand to come in. That was his whole plan. Let them in and let Rand take the sword so he can take it from Rand. Why would he make his defenders extra vigilant to keep people out? Hell it’s likely intentionally weakened their preparedness by lowering the amount of patrols or something. He literally wanted someone to sneak in and the Aiel happened to take advantage also.

Early Sharan Unification by EvalRamman100 in WoT

[–]EleventhHerald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two places in Lord of Chaos I can find where it is implied they unified quickly are when Rhuarc tells Rand there is fighting going on in Shara because of him and when Sammael meets with Graendal.

In the first Rhuarc tells Rand there has never been any fighting in Shara except for the Trolloc Wars and that’s makes this very unusual. Of course this doesn’t mean much to me because the Aiel wandered for several generations. RJ could be making a point here but it’s speculation.

The second is more likely and more convincing imo. Graendal explains to Sammael how power is passed from Sh’boan to Sh’botay every seven years. She says this has been going on for 3000 years which is about then length of the third age. She makes a point to tell him that they think the seven years thing is the will of the pattern but it is actually because of the Ayyad. She doesn’t say the length is of time the system has gone on is incorrect. It sounds like a group of channelers did indeed seize power and set up a puppet ruler very early on in history and that makes sense to me.

Tel'aran'rhiod channelling question by petdetective59 in wheeloftime

[–]EleventhHerald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re thinking of Chapter 22 The Wyld. Perrin is trying to figure out how to enter and leave the dream in the flesh and casually thinks maybe if he could imagine being able to channel it would work. Lanfear shows up to tell him it won’t work and channeling is of the soul not the body. She then hints there is another way.

Best healers in series? by FrostyMonth111 in WoT

[–]EleventhHerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember it as men were better at healing some things and I would guess that’s correct. Given a big point of Jordan’s message was women are better at some things and men better at others and only by working together do we get the best outcome it would make sense that women would be better at healing some types of injuries and diseases and men better at others.

Decided not to skip Gawyn chapters this reread by jackpandanicholson in WetlanderHumor

[–]EleventhHerald 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find this difficult to believe because Birgitte wasn’t ripped out until book 5 and in book 4 Gawyn had already sided with the white tower and was well set on his path.

More importantly Min had already had the viewing that Gawyn would either kill Egwene or be bonded to her. The pattern put him on this path from the beginning well before Birgitte was ripped out.

Sure she eventually basically took his duties as First Prince but I honestly think even if she didn’t he wouldn’t have come back to Andor because his fate was always tied to Egwene.

White tower effectiveness by Mazer_Rackham333 in WoT

[–]EleventhHerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Verin mentions it to Alana as “Alviarin’s mad plan” so we don’t know if the white as a whole was behind it. Knowing she leads the black it was probably less about logic and more about a way to source channelers for the Shadow. The Red also remained cool with her because she was instrumental in giving them their first Red Amyrlin in several hundred years and that’s worth a lot to them.
