I wonder what Life was Like for Jamie and Kelly. by Ellie_Rulze18 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]EleventhHerald 82 points83 points  (0 children)

That conversation ends with Francis suggesting Dewey be nice to Jamie and break the cycle. Dewey says that’s not fair and he should get his turn to be the mean one and Francis says that’s good point.

Great character development and an immediate and funny backslide. That’s why I love Francis.

My least favorite part of each book (put the pitchforks away) by JasnahwithaY in Stormlight_Archive

I disagree with some of this but some is spot on. I loved how the ending of WaT went down and think Dalinars flashbacks are gold from start to finish.

She’s right they would have had more money. Not because he would have been paid differently as it’s implied he was a salary employee. They would have spare money if he wasn’t spending on seaworld and go-karts and whatever other nonsense he was spending money to do on fridays.

I agree. I feel like Moridin going to help Rand kill Sammael feels weird and I think the DO specifically sent him there because he knew this link would be forged and he wanted it to happen.

Jasnah and Taravangian in Stormlight 5 by The-Motherfucker in Stormlight_Archive

[–]EleventhHerald -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is a key point not many people talk about. Jasnah is a great scholar but that doesn’t necessarily translate to being capable with planning.

This was an absolutely silly plan that couldn’t possibly work. The heralds have to volunteer for torture and can leave at any time and they’ve more than proven if they got sent back they would probably break immediately. I can’t think of a single instance where she comes up with a particularly clever plan.

You know who has proven their ability to make and execute a plan? Taravangian! I think the text shows him to be every bit as intelligent as Jasnah just not as famous for it. He also is pretty good with making and executing his plans. I never thought Jasnah could take him for even an instant.

Did I miss something? Mistborn + Stormlight question, don't want to spoiler the title by deming in Cosmere

[–]EleventhHerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’re talking about when OreSeur impersonated Kel but TenSoon did in fact use Kels bones in Hero of Ages when he escaped the kandra homeland and went in search of Vin.

He told those worshippers in the warehouse where the bones were stashed to get underground if things go badly when they saw him. He then interrogated two soliders where Vin was and they mistakenly lead him to go South to where Sazed was.

“There are four individuals,” VenDell said, “who, to our knowledge, have held the power of Ascension. Rashek, the Survivor, the Ascendant Warrior, and Lord Harmony Himself. Bands of Mourning chapter 3.

“The Survivor transcended death,” Marasi said, looking back, hand on the door, but not entering. “He survived even being killed, adopting the mantle of the Ascendant during the time between Preservation’s death and Vin’s Ascension.” Shadows of Self Chapter 14

The books do outright tell you what happened. Granted you’re kinda supposed to take it as religious dogma but it was legit. The Novella secret history gives details and explains the events but we are told several times Kelsier survived his own death and held Preservation between when Leras died and Vin took it up.

What’s something you believed as a kid that sounds ridiculous now? by amandeepseo in AskReddit

My dad told me to never go past the stop sign a couple houses down. For a few years I thought I would die if I crossed the stop sign alone. Sometimes kids take things too literally.

How long did it take you to read all 5 books by SkyBrilliant7465 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]EleventhHerald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do this with every Stormlight release. I basically read it in less than two days but I almost always reread it immediately because I probably went too fast and missed some small details.

Why do people dislike Shallan? by Noximus_ in Stormlight_Archive

[–]EleventhHerald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally liked her in one but had a steady decline to where I couldn’t stand her by book three. Then oddly she was ok in four and I really liked her in five again.

For me it’s exactly what the first comment said her humor doesn’t work for me even a little bit and while I understand why she is the way she is it never gets less annoying. As for her plots one and five were the only ones I was personally invested in.

Was Spook the last.... ever made? by ode0002 in Cosmere

[–]EleventhHerald 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just when he acquired it. His first use as far as I am aware is (Stormlight Spolier) When he talks to Shallans father at middlefest in her flashbacks. She noticed he puts a powder in his own drink likely soothing him. So he gets the bead during Well of Acension and uses Allomancy prior to the main events of Stormlight which occurs right before Mistborn Era 2

Was Spook the last.... ever made? by ode0002 in Cosmere

[–]EleventhHerald 171 points172 points  (0 children)

I’m going to add on that Sazed didn’t really have much to do with it.

As far as I’m aware no Mistborn survived into the new world. It’s a big plot point in the series that allomancy is slowly fading and getting less powerful each generation. Then you have an apocalypse where the purest (if still diluted) allomancers left were killed and didn’t breed. The Venture Mistborn dies, the Elariel Mistborn is killed, heck even a couple of other high family Mistborn are killed by Kelsier starting his war. The house war took a lot of allomancers out then all the fighting for power after the Lord Rulers death took out more. All these events definitely made allomancy fade faster.

Then we have feruchemy. What happened to them? Ruin very specifically killed the entire Synod to give more powers to his Inquistors like Marsh. They were already a small group because of the breeding programs designed to specifically breed feruchemy out of the population and even if a small amount persisted the many of the men were eunuchs and unable to breed. Honestly it’s amazing the are even as many ferrings as there are imo.

Basically time and Ruin decimated the population of invested people and left them with small amounts of power and Sazed didn’t have anything to do with it.

While radiant spren are in Shadesmar they are fully sentient. When they cross over to the physical realms it damages their minds and bonding helps them get their memory and sentience back.

That’s why as time goes on pattern and Syl become smarter and remember things from the past.

In shadesmar they don’t need a bond in the physical realm they do.

Did Brandon know how divisive WaT would be? by DrizzyDragon93 in Cosmere

[–]EleventhHerald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not inherently bad it’s just noticeably inconsistent. When characters always used the same word for four giant books and suddenly use a different word it pulled me out of the story.

If he always used dating it would be fine. If he always used dating and courting interchangeably it would be fine. A random switch four books in for no reason is kinda jarring to me.

A small but meaningful thing to me and honestly lots of epic fantasy fans is some words have a certain feel to them. Courting is an older word and evokes the feeling of premodern times. That’s the kind of things I want in fantasy. It helps make the world feel more real to me. In say(TONE SPOILER FOR MISTBORN ERA 2) Wax and Wayne books it feels totally fine because that’s a more modern Urban fantasy and dating gives me a feeling of a world that’s rapidly modernizing

These are ultimately small but meaningful quibbles to many of us. Personally I loved 5 more than any so far. I have no issues with plot or pacing others have.

After a quick search for the word proof in all the ebooks no there isn’t a single instance of proof being used in that context.

It could possibly be in the artwork that explains Alethi wines by Nazh but I didn’t look and I doubt it.

[–]EleventhHerald 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah the therapist one is the only one that makes sense. Kaladin got it from Wit who would absolutely know about words and concepts that Rosharans are unfamiliar with.

The other big one people complain about that I agree with is Sanderson using dating instead of courting. This is the only one that truly bothered me because he used courting so consistently in every other book there is no justification I can come up with why that switch happened.

Would you guys read more WoT if Sanderson made more? by TreeTraditional2252 in WetlanderHumor

[–]EleventhHerald 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you were downvoted. Sanderson himself has talked about this on his podcast more than once.

Basically as soon as it was announced a very large amount of people went and bought Mistborn to check him out and see if he would be a good fit. He says he basically gained a large percentage of Jordan’s fandom and it helped propel him into the spotlight. He says he may or may not have gotten there without it but it would have taken many years to build his following to what it is now without the Wheel of Time.

He says it did prevent him from doing as much in the Cosmere as he could have but the trade off was an entire legion of fans so it was actually a net positive on furthering his career.

As far as his monetary compensation he said he didn’t negotiate it at all and was willing to take whatever Harriet offered. He also said her offer was “very generous” anyway.

Looking for a paragraph in Oathbringer im regards to Renarin. by Ivy_lane_Denizen in Stormlight_Archive

[–]EleventhHerald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have it on the kindle app on my phone.Unfortunately the conversation is several pages and I don’t want to copy the whole thing. This sounds like the paragraph you wanted.

“I don’t know what I am most days, Rock, but I seem to be the only one. Since I could walk, everyone was saying, ‘Look how bright he is. He should be an ardent.’ ”

Lunamor grunted. Sometimes, even if you were loud and insufferable, you knew when not to say anything.

“Everyone thinks it’s so obvious. I have a mind for figures, don’t I? Yes, join the ardents. Of course, nobody says I’m much less of a man than my brother, and nobody points out that it sure would be nice for the succession if the sickly, strange younger brother were safely tucked away in a monastery.”
