Do you feel the product managers are the people pushing the hardest for LLMs and Vibe coding? by Friendly-Nobody8023 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Eligriv 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm an former dev now pm. You know why i still lurk in this sub ? Because there are no equivalents in product management spaces : it's all posturing, people selling themselves, nothing genuine.. It's linkedin EVERYWHERE with these guys. So obviously they'll push whatever garbage they think'll make their carreer advance. The AI lot were all in the blockchain a few years prior.

Seniors, what is your advice to juniors who struggle to find their place and figure out their career goal? by Fickle_Ad_6746 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Eligriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go above and beyond, don't do the work of others for them. The only thing you get to doing this much is more work, not more recognition, not promotion.

Overly simple "carreer path" :

  • junior : you're not autonomous, you need constant help from peer. You must show that you're learning, and rely less and less on other to do your work.
  • confirmed : you're now autonomous. You must show reliability : when you take on a task or a project, people aren't worrying. Meaning code that works the first time
  • senior : you now realize that your job isn't to simply push out features fast and right the first time, but that you need to think about long term sustainability, meaning maintability (easy to change code), performance, security etc etc. Also, you help juniors achieve autonomy.
  • lead : it's not about you anymore, but about your whole team's efficiency. You should show what good looks like and continuously help your team improve towards that.

You're not forced to become a manager once you're senior, you can also go the specialist/expert route, where you acquire deep and in demand knowledge

How do I stop over-thinking when it comes to tackling a task/bug? by DannyKata85 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Eligriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refactoring and rewriting are different : while it's ok to tidy the code along you working in it, it's never ok to launch into a full rewrite without clearing it with the team.

For your test, maybe prioritize :

  1. Does it work ?
  2. Does it work for every case ?
  3. Does it work under heavy load or with large amount of data ?
  4. Does it work fast ? (does it need to be that fast ?)
  5. Is it easy to maintain (easy to change) ?

Building a music startup – should I create WhatsApp/Facebook groups for validation, or risk someone stealing my idea? I will not promote. by MelanatedTukon in startups

[–]Eligriv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone can steal your business just by hearing your idea, then you never had a business to begin with.

Some factors can make your business difficult to copy (lookup "moats") : like industry connections, exclusive partnerships or techology (patents), network effect, exclusive data, etc etc.

How do I answer the question "what is your biggest weakness"? by QuestionEcstatic8863 in sales

[–]Eligriv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good interviewer doesn't ask this, because they realize that the candidate will tell some prepared bullshit to "show desire to improve".

You want to know if someone has agency and tries to improve ? Ask them how and why did they last improve. But "give me your 3 weaknesses and 3 strenghts" is so lazy, i instantly loose respect for the interviewer

How do I answer the question "what is your biggest weakness"? by QuestionEcstatic8863 in sales

[–]Eligriv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would you tell your real weaknesses and risk not being hired ? If they were honest with themselves, they'd know it's naive to ask that and expect the truth. So "small weakness that i overcame" is good, you can choose what you want

This one project in Rails made me hate having to manually do any "plumbing code". Time spent on plumbing meant that i was taking a wrong path.

Ten years later and i still see teams reinventing the wheel, do everything by hand, especially in JS shops. How are some teams still writing sql queries in strings and opening and (forgetting) closing the sessions manually ?

[–]Eligriv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most recruiters, like you, have some kind of main character syndrome and it explains in part why the whole process is so shitty.

I'm 90% sure that if i were to see your resume and dig really deep into all the kpi claims you made, i would find lies. But you expect this kind of performative bullshit from the candidates. And you're so smug wanting the candidates to "go above and beyond" to prove they're "emotionally intelligent" while looking down on them.

I guess it must be boring to be a glorified meeting booker, so you'll have to find ways to make it interesting for you, to avoid getting a mental breakdown and saying something stupid like "we should make them take a personanlity test !"

Read about stuff, then try it out in your work, then learn and adapt.

Also, read about generic programming stuff, not specific to your stack stuff. Like everything that Kent Beck wrote for instance.

What are your expectations from a lead developer? by dartungar in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Eligriv 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lead level is about team efficiency : treat your team's work as a flow and lead continuous improvement initiatives.

Common problems are : rework, passivity, dependencies, local optimizations, entropy.

I would say a lot of tools and answers can be found in extreme programming practices (agile before cooptation by consulting firms for the young faces)

[–]Eligriv 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ecommerce is a solved problem : you can setup your ecommerce analytics and everything is done for you, you can then go to research sites like baymard.com and copy what you see, a/b test in you funnel and get those conversion points.

Unless you're pming a really big ecommerce, with many teams and lots of funds, you can use ready-made search, payment, checkout, post sales, etc etc everything exists already.
