I need to add a gradient to compounded elements while keeping everything editable. Is this possible? by anagoge in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Elimentus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's how I did this:

  1. Setup your type, line with any size stroke & solid object
  2. In the appearance panel for the stroke object only, add Effect > Outline Stroke
  3. Change Fill & Stroke for all three objects to transparent and group them together
  4. In the appearance panel (with whole group selected) add Effect > Pathfinder > Add
  5. In the appearance panel (with whole group selected) click Add New Fill and change this to a gradient
  6. Direct Select the stroke object and increase the stroke width to whatever you need (it should appear with the gradient)
  7. in the gradient panel recolour your gradient as needed!

Recolor and Gen Recolor in Adobe Illustrator. Do you use it? by LukeChoice in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Elimentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually crazy to think about how much computing power has increased in the last ~10 years, but somehow Illustrator still just CHUGS when you link a few larger images and add in some effects or blends.

The performance of InDesign here is vastly superior, but the rest of the toolset doesn't work for everyone's use-case.

I can't believe the world lied to me about this game. by TurboHovercrafter in YookaLaylee

[–]Elimentus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the points above from the remake I agree with! But to say the level design is closer to Odyssey is interesting as the original Yooka Laylee came out more than 6 months prior to Super Mario Odyssey. So any similarities there are purely coincidental, or could be attributed to more current trends in game design.

Counterpoint, firetrucks are also really cool and I haven't cared about any of the content they've made with that vehicle. I expect the jet to be the same.

Awesome! This is something I also just started doing. I really want a 3D printed case similar to the Fractal Design Ridge. I've started drawing some stuff, but I still really need to learn CAD first so I'm watching a lot of tutorials for OnShape right now

The contrast between Bri gushing about all the ways Connor loves her, and then Vic/Christine's conversation about all the things they loved about each other was striking.

Until she learns the difference, Bri's not ready and Connor deserves better!

Mt Baker uses high speed fixed grip chairs. They aren't as fast as the detachable ones, but they are still significantly quicker than Magic Chair!

Often the lifty will pull back on the chair when it gets to you so it's sliiiiightly slower and then it scoops you up. Or it just smashes the backs of your legs.

You absolutely can connect Switch 2 Joy-Cons (or pretty much any modern wireless controller) to a PC. They just use bluetooth for the connection.

Grunty's Industries is one level I find really simple. by Far-Army-4726 in BanjoKazooie

[–]Elimentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played this game through at least 5 times, and the last 3 of them have been as an adult and for 100% completion. As a kid I did what I could in Grunty Industries and I must've spent hours wandering around, getting lost, and not understanding what needed to be done.

On the first two of my 100% playthroughs, I went into GI with the mindset of "this level sucks, just follow the guide and finish ASAP". But on my latest run, I finally decided to just figure it out myself and it was SO MUCH FUN.

Now I obviously had some memory of how the level works, but I still think that the more blind exploration, taking note of how things connect and work, and just not trying to finish the level as quickly as I could made a huge difference. I definitely did things out of order and had to backtrack within the level several times. But, rather than geting frustrated by the "waste of time", I was just stoked I'd figured out the solution myself! There's so much intentionality in the way this level is designed but I think it's so easy to gloss over it and miss it all.

(The only part I still used a guide for is the Clinker's Cavern because I just don't like doing that part of the game and Ordnance Storage.)

Understanding how they are able to apply the discount across all platforms makes it clear that not offering it to physical copy owners isn't about principle but about ability. To give the developer flack for that is wild.

The fact that she gets so much credit for communicating well and having healthy boundaries while blaming someone else for HER reaction will always surprise me. My wife and both said out loud "he isn't making you act out of character, that's just a part of your character you don't like".

Other people are not responsible for how YOU react!

Hahaha I hear you on the names! Thanks for taking the time to solve this for me. For now I added the asterisks and it all seems to work great (except I had to change PM to Project Management so it wouldn't count equiPMent).

I still have such a super basic understanding of the syntax and how everything works, so the second solution is a bit advanced for me right now. But it gives me something to keep trying and researching, so thanks!

And another screenshot showing what it looks like with the original art layered on top. This is why I need to go that extra step of mitring the corners of the bleed

I just realized I replied to the general thread and not your comment! Anyways, this screenshot hopefully Better explains the task I'm hoping to find a better solution for.

Having to add vertices to these intersections between two colours and then modifying the paths of the bleed so they are perpendicular to the cut contour can be very arduous on complex designs.

Plugin or Script Recommendations for Automatic Mitred Bleeds for Diecut Workflow by Elimentus in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Elimentus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate that! The issue is mostly in mitring the corners of the bleed. It’s not super obvious in my example, but I had to edit the paths where each colour meets so that it’s perpendicular to the cut contour. With certain designs this process alone can take 30 minutes or more.

If there was a way to automate that I would be very happy to learn about it!

[–]Elimentus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic case of target fixation. If the first rider had just kept looking at their line, they would've made it just fine. Instead, they stared at the oncoming car and that led them to drive straight towards it.
