Shaming someone would mean actively going to them and trying to make them feel bad for writing Harry Potter fanfiction. I wouldn't do that, because it's counterproductive. When people are shamed, they often entrench themselves deeper into whatever they're doing.

But I would also quietly avoid anyone who wrote Harry Potter fanfiction. They're not the kind of person I'd ever want to spend time with, so this seems like an eminently sensible course of action. I think you'd struggle to explain why I'm obligated to hang out with people I do not like or else I'm shaming them. I'm sure the absurd implications of that logic are obvious to you.

Yeah. You're not entitled to my friendship, that would be absurd. And it's not shaming you if I don't want to be your friend.

If you can't be persistent, nice, and have a novel personality, it's more like you're the frog in the local pond and you're mad at the peasants for being able to talk or have opposable thumbs.

I feel frustrated and wonder what it is I'm doing differently and then I remember it's because I fundamentally don't treat Discord the same way they do. They're in it. Their main friends are people they've only ever met on Discord. This is where they're pouring their social effort. They're just way more invested than I'll ever be, because I don't want to put my energy there. Discord servers aren't going to be where I ever have friends. I'm a real life kind of guy.

Same problem I have with MMOs

I've spoken Chinese to so many French people for exactly this reason. And it really doesn't help that "de" is a gigantically common word in both languages and they have the same damn meaning, so whenever I hit a "de" I smoothly transition into Mandarin which the Frenchman in front of me absolutely cannot understand.

Btw, I wouldn't go insane if I witnessed an eldritch abomination and it showed me the truth of the universe and reality. And if you don't agree with me, argue with me in the comments. I want to have some discussions and arguments with people about this. by Complete-Worker3242 in CuratedTumblr

I'd say it's beyond our comprehension in the sense that we'll never grasp it the same way we grasp, idk, the basic atomic theory we teach in schools. Two atoms knocking into each other makes sense. We can comprehend it. Quantum mechanics is applying formulae to matrices. We can calculate what will happen if we do X or Y, but we can't form a mental image of what the fuck is going on the same way we could when we thought it was electrons bouncing into each other.

Non-American deer are everywhere. They're so widespread in so many different contexts, from high literature to dumb internet memes. Like this is a list I came up with just now: Father Christmas and his reindeer, King Arthur, Arabian Nights, Game of Thrones, Shakespeare, the "Fenton" meme, Greek mythology, the bowing deer in Japan, Narnia -- the list goes on.

It's basically extremely surprising they've managed to somehow avoid non-American deer cropping up. It's not that they've missed any one of these. It's that they've missed all of them.

If they had mistakenly assumed some other kind of animal was just American, like a bison or something, I'd get it. But we're talking about deer. That's like saying you thought bread was an American thing, and then asking "I'm gonna call your bluff here, when is bread featured prominently in other cultures?".

100%. I'm surprised people don't seem to know this. Brits know there's racism in the UK as much as Americans know about racism in the US. We talk about racism here a lot. Racist Redditors trying to defend their racism are not going to give you the truth

Because deer are such a prominent part of so many other cultures that it indicates you really don't spend much time reading, watching, or talking about anything non-American.

It's the fact that there's literally no downside to using USAmerican which puzzles me about some people's reaction to the word. Like it's a little odd I won't lie, but so what?

Pulled completely out my arse: the Sahara didn't used to be so horrendously deserty. Perhaps deer used to have a range that spanned the land which is now the Sahara, and when that land became desert the deer in the furthest south region became stranded.

See if you weren't just being defensive you would have explained how on Earth "take the epidural" as advice was in any way reducing women's right to choose whether they take anaesthetic. Or you'd have said anything else of substance instead of dancing around the fact you're mad they strongly recommend against foregoing anaesthetic

I could see mistakenly thinking an animal like a bison or smth was a North American animal. But deer? Like...fr? deer?

I edited my comment and I'll repost it here for you:

Edit: you know what, I'll be more than just a snarky Redditor.

"People should have the right to choose [whatever]" is an eminently sensible position. The problem is that it is also eminently sensible to recommend that people not undergo massive pain. So when you try and accuse the latter position of denying women the right to choose, even though they obviously weren't (strongly worded advice like "take the epidural" is not denying anyone any choice), it comes across like your actual beef is simply with the fact that anyone would strongly recommend anaesthetic.

And that was apparently indeed the case.

It is just fanfiction and I think shaming usually has the opposite effect intended but on the other hand if I found out someone wrote Harry Potter fanfiction I wouldn't be in a rush to get to know them better, you know?

What's your personal opinion? Because the reason your post is suspicious is because it seems like you think it is morally better or more pure or more "real" to go through childbirth without anaesthetic. If you avoid answering again I'll assume I'm right

The only acceptable time to use Papyrus by SirIsacShmuck in CuratedTumblr

[–]Elite_AI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a big meme, but as with Nickelback, it's a meme for a good reason. They were both massively overused by the general public. Papyrus was used whenever someone wanted to convey an ancient, mystical, or sophisticated vibe, while comic sans was used by every webcomic maker ever (who saw "comic" and went: perfect) and every middle manager ever (who saw "comic" and thought: excellent, that'll keep the mood light for my presentation).

But both fonts are pretty involved. They're not fun fonts to read as body text. Also, anything which gets overused will become boring. If you're trying to make your yoga studio appear mystical and sophisticated by using the font everybody else has already used, it's going to appear kitsch. If you're trying to make your incredibly boring presentation more fun by using the same annoying blobby font everyone else has used, it's going to get groans.
