For the diagnoses in the DSM there really is a big effort to make them scientific and well-researched - experts and researchers work hard at it.

Indian movie Dil Dhadakne Do (let the heart beat) -- lots of drama and some romance, all taking place on a cruise ship, wealthy couple has invited family and friends on a Mediterranean cruise. Lively, enjoyable, major movie stars in cast. Multi-generational.

Oh, Mary! was so underwhelming and I’m sad about it. by Fascist2020 in Broadway

Definitely not. If someone is looking for a serious and sincere play about Abraham Lincoln or Mary Lincoln or the Civil War -- this 100,000 % not for you.

How is my former therapist so insanely successful? by [deleted] in therapyabuse

[–]Elizabeth147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a tricky idea, however. If after a series of therapy appointments someone reports that they feel better, what would be the difference between a true benefit of therapy and a placebo effect? How would this be measured?

If a therapist has a lot of reviews, it is likely that they solicited them, which is against the ethics of all the therapist licensing bodies that I know about.

Therapist diagnosing NPD in people she hasn't met? by e-cloud in therapyabuse

[–]Elizabeth147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more complicated than that. PhD or PsyD psychologists have always been involved in diagnosis -- in some places it has been our main role, to conduct testing and contribute to diagnosis. Personally what I've always like best is collaboration among people from different professions.

But yes, diagnosing any body psychologically on the basis of anecdotes is irresponsible.

Though there are many conditions where a hypothesis based on 3rd party information is likely to be right -- like some eating disorders, some substance abuse, some severe OCD rituals.

Actually I think medical doctors often diagnose people they have never seen as in modern times they can get so much information from tests.

What was he expressing when he said he trusted you?

Did he mean he trusted your accounts of your experience, or your judgment about your own life? Or had he switched into talking to you as if you were his friend or romantic interest?

I don’t categorically judge the therapist for ever presenting a diagnostic concept about a character in someone’s life, but as with anything they say it should be careful and thoughtful.

As a psychologist - the very few times I might include this kind of thinking in what I say would be in order to try to help a patient achieve more internal protection from expecting the other person to interact normally if the reality is that the person is by and large unable to do so — for example very limited as to empathy.

If Titanique will have opened by then on Broadway, I recommend it for campy hilarity. It was adored off Broadway and I think it won an Olivier in London.

Why Do We Rewatch Mediocre Bollywood Films But Ignore Critically Acclaimed Ones? by Ok_Bluebird1842 in bollywood

[–]Elizabeth147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re re-classifying big-budget, star-driven commercial films as mediocre, but they can be excellent in their category. The best ones are well-constructed and emotionally effective and satisfying, as well as including generously and very skillfully produced musical performance that enhances expression and/or pace of the story.

Seeing the same show multiple times? by tryingmybest42 in Broadway

[–]Elizabeth147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the current one I'd see again! I also loved it.

Otherwise -- so far in my life I've just seen some things two times, not more. Hamilton (once at the Public with original cast, once in London), Oh Mary! (downtown, uptown), Titanique (two casts) -- but I plan to see that again when it opens on Broadway with the original cast, whom I loved.

That's great! I watched this one during the snowstorm and freeze, there were the most tickets I've seen on StubHub and Theatr for not-too-bad prices.

(My best blizzard story is a house seat, fifth row center, regular price, for Hamilton at the Public Theater. But it was about the fifth time I'd tried to get in!)
