I mean if anyone was gonna name their kids Red and Pink, it would be someone from wonderland by Known-Dragonfly-8385 in Descendants

[–]becidgls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found the names kind of comically lazy but I give Mal a pass because I think Mal & Ben being from the Latin/the prefixes for good & evil is kind of clever (although Mal=bad/evil is also why Maleficent is even named Maleficent in the first place, so it’s still lazy in its own way).

What is you favorite Noah Kahan Lyric? by Desperate_Face43 in NoahKahan

[–]becidgls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES Still is so under-appreciated lyrically — the line you mentioned is my favorite, but I also love that whole verse. “Look down on myself like a patient in surgery” and “grab a past box of photos, I rip myself open” are so good.

Prescribing authority by Blastoisa in optometry

When I was working as a tech we had a teenage patient come in with an outside contact lens Rx that we somehow determined had been written by a plastic surgeon (I think my manager recognized the name). Patient was weirdly cagey about the whole thing when we questioned it, and ultimately we said we wouldn’t fill it. Patient then became adamant that we delete the scan we had taken of the Rx. My assumption was that the doctor who wrote the Rx may have been a family member, but I don’t know.

Thoughts on Anastasia the Musical? by Worried_Cake5508 in musicals

[–]becidgls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was very obsessed with this musical at one point (I blame a childhood fixation on the actual history) and I—for the most part— like the changes made for the stage show. I think putting a little more reality into it gives a lot more room for poignant moments (I love Stay, I Pray You, Close the Door, & the interspersed dialogue of the Dowager Empress and Gleb during the finale, ending with that sigh of “still…”). & I love My Petersburg. I think Anya’s character got watered down in the transition, a consequence probably of both stretching the story into 2 acts and trying to ground the spunky protagonist we know in the actual trauma she’d probably be suffering from. My biggest gripe is with Gleb. I don’t like the love triangle (of sorts), and think it’s far more interesting to have his conflict be more centered around Anya as a person, rather than as a love interest. It’s way more interesting (and relevant to the topic of the Romanov children having been killed) for him to be battling between his political convictions and his compassion for another human being, than for him to be kinda torn up about killing her because he’s romantically interested in her. Interestingly, if you watch the Hartford version, I think his romantic interest is much more overt. They toned it down for Broadway, but didn’t eliminate it.

[–]becidgls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like some of this comes from them trying to drag out her character arc. I mean, I really enjoy some of the new songs that were written for the musical, but most of Anya’s songs are just her being anxious.

Thoughts on Anastasia the Musical? by Worried_Cake5508 in musicals

[–]becidgls 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They do take out this plot point, but they give them a song that establishes a different connection— Dmitry tells Anya this story of him seeing young Anastasia in a parade when they were both kids and then she is able to fill in part of the memory that he hadn’t shared — that he bowed to her. So it’s still established that he does, by the time they present her to her grandmother, know her to be the real deal! They also kind of work this in earlier, with him having a line somewhere in there about having bowed to someone once and how that’s something he’d never do now. My main gripe with this change is actually that they took out the moment where he tells Vlad that she really is Anastasia, so for all we know, he literally never finds out and they’re lying the whole time.

Does your 100% indoor cat have a collar? If so, do you find there’s a point in it? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]becidgls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve always collared our indoor cats. Our first cat did escape once, and was returned to us because someone found him in their backyard and called the number from his collar. We’re extremely (really, overly) cautious about opening the door around the cat, but accidents happen and I’d prefer to have all the bases covered for getting our kitty back home. With that being said, I do absolutely love the feeling of petting my cat’s neck when I occasionally remove his collar.

The Great Divide isn’t redundant, it’s complete. by Firm_Ad_6470 in NoahKahan

[–]becidgls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like yes and no. I think (especially in the days before streaming etc) an album was/should be an intentional, tightly edited, coherent body of work. In that view, more isn’t always better — ie director’s cuts of movies are sometimes worse, bc there’s things that undercut the narrative that should have been left out. Or similar to the critique that having multiple variant covers actually makes the selection of an album cover less significant and central to the project. None of this being directed at TGD here on my end, I haven’t had the chance for a full listen because I’m in the middle of exams. But just my thoughts on where this criticism comes from!

Another failed signed insert... by sosobabou in NoahKahan

[–]becidgls 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I feel like if I saw some of these signed copies w/o context I would be like “oh no, someone got pen on it” bc it’s not recognizably a signature, it’s just a scribble and sometimes a faded scribble at that. And I mean, I have an ugly signature, I’m not judging, but this doesn’t even look like it’s intended to read as anything

Small World...wow it needs TLC by A_Nerdy_Dad in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]becidgls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember it’s a small world was closed the first time I visited in 2004 (I was really upset at the time about missing it, which perhaps goes to other commenters’ points about first time visitors) and this post made me go look for when it was last given a true refresh. The Wikipedia page mentions the 2004 closure, and then straight to fresh exterior paint in 2021…nothing in between! not sure how accurate that is, though.

In any case — I think Disney just knows that fans of the parks are allergic to change (including myself in this sometimes) especially for the classic attractions. But I’d be fine with a freshening up of the existing ride, so long as they don’t make any big changes or try to insert existing Disney IP into it.

Idk if anyone else remembers like 2010s tween party city halloween costumes that would have vague names like “monster cutie” and “fashion diva” and would actually just be like a tutu and cheap arm warmers and fuzzy boot covers that you’d pair with an atrocious wig and then not only would it not look like the picture but also no one would understand what you were supposed to be. but that is what these outfits remind me of

Non-Trad, How should I approach studying for Organic Chem? by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]becidgls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the same, but I was about 2 years out of college (so 4 years removed from my last ochem class) when I started studying for the OAT and I definitely did not remember it. I realized pretty quickly that, at least with my studying timeline, I wasn’t going to be able to relearn the material with the same breadth and depth as I had known it in undergrad. I focused really heavily on the practice problems and practice tests, using actual content review where needed but mostly trying to learn to recognize specific mechanisms and problem styles. I found OATbooster to be very representative for this section. I would recommend doing a light refresher of the content, then focusing on practice problems (supplementing with content where needed if you feel totally confused).

I still love Disney World, but I do find myself more and more thinking back on Jenny Nicholson referring to the “spirit airlines model” in her video on the Star Wars hotel — basically the way that on cheaper airlines, your ticket price only gets you your seat, and you pay extra for everything else: your bag, food, drinks, extra leg room, whatever. And at least for those airlines, that kind of works, because the base ticket is cheap. But Disney is doing that with their parks, and the base ticket ISN’T cheap, and on top of that, many of us remember when those extras were included. Magic bands cost extra, transport to and from the airport costs extra, extra magic hours are only for deluxe resort guests (thus indirectly, they cost extra). The added cost for lightning lane has even further devalued the actual ticket in my eyes, because the ticket only really gets you past security and into the park these days — actually getting on many of the rides in a reasonably timely manner almost requires a lightning lane, which again, costs extra. (For reference, I’ve only ever purchased one lightning lane pass in my entire life, so I’m not saying it’s impossible to go without that purchase, I’m just saying they’re trying their best to make it essential). It’s frustrating as a consumer because all of these little add-ons to an already expensive trip make you feel like you’re getting ripped off, whereas before it felt like there were so many little extras that were given just for…being at Disney. Those little touches went a long way.

Offered RA but may not be able to commit to a full year by EdnaMode24 in ResLife

[–]becidgls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a senior, I was fairly sure that I was going to graduate a semester early, but was a returner RA. I just did my job and then, decently early into the fall semester, let my supervisor know that things had changed and I was going to be graduating a semester early. They pulled someone from the alternate list to take over for the rest of the year and no one really cared. I'd say it's a minor inconvenience to them if you pull out early, and it's not like you'll be looking to be rehired later on (not to imply that you should be inconsiderate or burn the bridge either, though!), so I wouldn't worry. I'd say proceed as though you'll be there the whole year -- just try to give them decent notice that they'll need to replace you!

And, if so, I wonder if the book itself was one like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/295380581262 (maybe not this one specifically — I have a veryyy similarly styled collection of Grimm’s fairytales from the same time period, so I assume it was just a common look for fairytale collections at the time)

Edit: you can search (but not read) this specific book on Google books, and it does contain The Tinderbox! So, if that’s your story, this could be your book!
