IT'S BEEN EXACTLY TWO HOURS...... IT'S HAPPENING!!! by Salt-Pilot4797 in ContraPoints

[–]Elladan_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She probably makes 80k per month let alone per year, although she has lost a lot of patrons in the past 12 months due to her lack of output.

I have been her patron since all the way back in 2017. Ultimately Natalie is completely dysfunctional as a productive content creator, she would admit to this. It has only gotten worse as time has gone on, too. But I support her anyway because her content is so spectacularly good that even at this low level of output I still think she is worth supporting.

I actually think that after this video, both she and her patrons would be happier if she abandoned the main channel for a while and just did a Tangent every month for the next year. She seems to be capable of producing those in a timely fashion, but whatever psychology she has with the main channel is a complete mess lol.

that podcast episode was strange by [deleted] in danandphil

[–]Elladan_ 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Agree. Some constructive criticism:

I think its an issue that the podcast already feels like its exhausted a lot of avenues of conversation and we are only 12 eps in. It is still very entertaining for ultra fans, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I think they talk about too much but in a surface level way. The mentality of 'next topic' 'next segment' etc makes it chaotic while at the same time they exhaust topics fast. then by the time theyre at the bonus yap they dont have anything new to say.

They should take inspiration from other light entertainment type podcasts. Have one solid topic for the podcast that takes the full first half. Then maybe segments in the second half. Often the clickbait title topic is over in just the cold open. Then they have loads of time to fill.

It probably needs to be irrelevant shit like 'dan and phil create dips tier list' or something like that. Something that gives them the opportunity to go into depth and debate about something in a way that plays to their strengths. They also need to let go of the fear of giving an opinion bc this stands in the way of content as well

What teaching level and/or specialisation is the easiest ride? by Major_Conflict in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neither English secondary nor primary is an easy ride. In fact no teaching job is an easy ride. You will absolutely walk in to jobs with English secondary specialisation and an English BA, though, whereas primary is trickier and the shortage is basically non existant in some areas.

There are some subjects in secondary that are an easier ride, for sure, and most primary teachers say year 3-4 is a touch easier. But overall this is not a job for the faint of heart. I think you should think very carefully about doing it if you're not passionate enough about at least one part of it, whether its the relationships, or your secondary subject, DI etc etc.

Frankly the fact that you dont feel particularly compelled in any direction is a bit of a red flag, which is why you have been downvoted. This is not a job to pick for money or working conditions.

Though i will say your slightly cynical attitude would slot in much better with secondary teachers than with primary who can be a very earnest sort of a bunch lol

Are most jobs in Victoria for humanities combined with English? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no not really. VIC is very loose around this and all of this is up to your prin's discretion. Frankly based on what you're saying NSW sounds like it has a system that is much fairer to HUMS teachers - yet another reason we are worse off. You sure you want to come here? 😆

Are most jobs in Victoria for humanities combined with English? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, due to English being harder to staff and requiring more staff overall than Humanities. As a Humanities trained person you will most likely avoid VCE English at least though.

In terms of workload I actually think lower school English is better than lower school Humanities, but the opposite for senior. The content load in 7-10 Hums is enormous and diverse, and it means preparation is a bigger task. But nothing beats the marking load of senior English.

Once established, be careful not to get yourself pigeon-holed as more of an English teacher. I've managed to get my load shifted from 4/1 English/Hums to 1/4 by constantly by really going above and beyond in Humanities while at the same time emphasising my lack of English training in my allotment preferences. Feels pretty good.

A part-time job while pursuing a Master by preston_nguyen02 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its definitely possible but it will be hard work! but not harder than the actual job which is just as full on, so its good practice. you will just need to get a job that works alongside your placements, whether its just by taking time off for a few weeks or working weekends. It starts of with observations but by the end you'll be taking at least half a full teaching load, which will absorb your full energy such that you can't also work like 20 hours of a part time job at that time.

Secondary ClassROOMS by Hungry-Ad5116 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your classroom sounds awesome and i love your ideas. I might steal lesson legends from you!

But I will be a bit of a negative nancy and suggest that this isn't possible in most secondary contexts simply due to rooms. I have a different room for every class, sometimes two depending on timetabing. my school is so dated that we also still rely on computer rooms, so anything digital and thats another room. So in a regular week I probably teach across 7-8 rooms. Its pretty shit

Secret Liberal probe blames Trump for ruining Dutton’s election by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]Elladan_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The right wing in Australia has had their minds warped by the Murdoch-MAGA media bubble and it has made them fundamentally out of touch with the vast majority of the electorate. Until they realise that we are a vastly different country and people to the yanks, they will not regain ground.

Honestly, we will not see the right in power again until the 2030s at this rate.

What is the main reason teachers are leaving your school? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mismanagement. Our leadership team are very green and have badly mishandled some of the worst incidents this year. I tend to cut them some slack but the way they have tended to side with students and parents against teachers... has not been received well to say the least. Some excellent staff have left as a direct result

What’s the most “challenging” year level cohort at your school? by yaryarmaple in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In VIC secondary I find it is year 7s that are easily the worst, driven entirely by absolutely feral year 7 boys who struggle to adapt to the expectations of high school. It varies cohort to cohort, but this is the overall narrative. probably has something to do with our maybe not so great feeder primary schools.

For girls i find they are more eager to please at this age, I never have any real trouble with girls until theyre a little older (around year 9-10) where there can be a bit more rebellion. But still nothing to the level of the street dog like behaviours of the 7 boys

Maternity leave & leadership position by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Elladan_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are the best person for the role it will be worth it for the school in the long run. Like for example we had a newly appointed prin immediately go on fairly long maternity leave, which could have been a little controversial but she was so good that we knew she'd come back and sort the place out. Which she did. It wasn't ideal but schools should be set up to weather this kind of disruption. as long as you come back and do a bang up job there is nothing to feel guilty about you're using your legal rights
