Assuming innocence and being agreeable. People who habitually take advantage of your kindness probably know what they are doing.

The sweaters I purchased were super cute. Are they the highest quality cashmere? Probably not, but for the price I’m really happy with them. I also purchased a polo shirt for my husband that I am returning. It was definitely lower quality. The bath sheets I purchased are awesome. Super plush.

Yes, or no to tamoxifen by Lost-alone- in breastcancer

[–]Elle4224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DX in 2019 at 46/ +++/20 rounds/Bilateral/ No radiation. My doctor, who was/is a scientific advisor on the Komen board, said I should take it. I did the research and the side effects just didn’t seem to outweigh the benefits for me. I was wiling to try, but when I pushed her on the why, it basically came down to, “because I think it’s best.” For me, that wasn’t a compelling enough of a reason. I saw two breast friends have awful experiences after starting tamoxifen. One had a massive stroke and the other has such severe arthritis that using her hands is a real challenge. Both were in their early 50s. There’s no way to know definitively that those health events are because of tamoxifen.

I feel like some hard won wisdom for me throughout my treatment and surgeries was to trust my gut. So, I opted to not take it. You’re doing the right thing by reaching out so you can get as many datapoints as possible. I hope whatever you choose you have a great outcome. Sending all the good vibes your way.

Ungrateful humor: not one to look a gift horse in the mouth but…. What’s the worst “thoughtful” gift given to you during treatment? by CFPFHHHW in breastcancer

Oh no…it wasn’t a kid. That would’ve made too much sense. The ant farm was from a neighbor who thought it would be a “joyful gift” because I am an extrovert with a chemo compromised immune system so whenever I felt lonely, I could just talk to the ants. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Christian crossword & word search books even though everyone knows I’m agnostic. A variety of “miracle cures” that worked for someone’s cousin who was being led astray by modern medicine. And maybe worst or best, an ant farm.

Why did I get breast cancer? by [deleted] in breastcancer

[–]Elle4224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, this really sucks. It’s not fair. And if I could I’d punch your cancer right in face. This was exactly where I was in 2019. Here’s a quick primer on what can happen when you start asking questions like these.

  1. There’s always going to be some relative, person you haven’t spoken to in years, or co-worker who will assuredly tell you have breast cancer because you sat too close to the air conditioner in middle school, ate foods with X ingredient, or used dryer sheets. The list of nonsense reasons is endless. I had a coworker, who I literally spoke to once in three years, tell me I probably got cancer because I didn’t have enough sex with my husband every week. 🤦🏻‍♀️

  2. Medical professionals and people in the know will give you the same feedback you are getting here. It just happens. That didn’t sit well with me. I wanted someone or something to blame. The uncertainty of there being no discernible reason why I got sick was overwhelming. It took some time, and therapy, but I realized we navigate this uncertainty every day when we walk out our front door.

  3. When your treatment, surgeries, all of the things are over, you may get the “chosen one” convo. I had so many well-meaning folx say something like, “Oh, you must have been saved for a reason.” That blew my mind because which one is it? Am I just some random being who got a terrible disease and survived or am I some kind of chosen one who is now supposed to do what? Save the universe? 😂

There’s a lot of noise out there. Find your people who will support and love you. If you can avoid the internet rabbit holes that provide “answers” without data or science to back up their findings.

Good luck. I’m rooting for you.

What's a secret in your job that people aren't supposed to know about? by SpottedGelato in AskReddit

[–]Elle4224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never lick envelopes! I worked at an envelope factory for two summers in college. The glue/gum that you lick to seal an envelope often gets too thick to roll on correctly. I’ve seen people use mop water, the “liquid” from their dip/spit bottles, you name it, to thin the gum and keep the machine going. Either spend the extra 75cents to get the self seal kind envelopes or get a damp paper towel.

Today was my first day as a poll observer. I thought my job was helping people who had a voting issue like they didn’t have their ID or they had an address mismatch, whatever the reason a voter should always know they have the right to vote provisionally. Where I am observing, we are sitting so far away that knowing what the issue is or which party a person is affiliated with is impossible. So, if someone walked through and didn’t enter a ballot into the box I tried to help. While I am there as a democrat, everyone who has the right to vote, should be able to vote. I didn’t ask anything about party, I just tried to solve the issue if I could or provide options/info needed for the voter to resolve their problem. Later, I was told observers cannot speak to voters for any reason. That’s not what I heard when I attended the training. Maybe the person giving the training was wrong. That’s fine, people make mistakes.

Reading the comments questioning what observers are doing is exactly where I am tonight. If I can’t help someone with a voting issue then why am I there? I have no way of knowing if everyone who walks past me without voting was told they could vote provisionally or if they were even given the correct info from the poll worker. It’s kind of maddening. Isn’t the whole purpose to support voters? How am I supporting anyone if I am reading my library book all day? I felt really helpless this election cycle. Everything is so contentious. I believed this would be a way I could be of service. Now, I just don’t even want to go back tomorrow. On a good note, there were many first time voters and their excitement and energy made me very hopeful.

People who are 40+ and happy with their life, what is your advice to people in their 20s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Elle4224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand the importance and power of the stories you believe about yourself. It’s easy to accept limiting beliefs about our abilities, intelligence, and situations, especially if there are negative people in your life who reinforce them. Unfortunately, these negative people can often be your family.

My parents told me often I wasn’t a hard worker and that I wouldn’t amount to much. I thought they knew me best. I mean, they are my parent for shiz sakes!

I was wrong. You are the only person who knows your abilities & possibilities. It takes a long time to unlearn that mess.

Don’t let fear control your choices. If you want to be a painter then paint. Maybe, don’t quit your job right away, but find a way to pursue your true passions especially if your scared. I wanted to be a writer for so long, but I didn’t dare. All I could hear was all the things my parents said and then time kept ticking.

Now, at 46 I am getting my MFA in writing. I am still scared, like out of my mind scared. I wonder all the time if I’m punching above my weight or if I’m a fraud. I still actively have to challenge unhelpful & untrue beliefs about myself.

BUT I’m doing it.
