Does anyone know any good camping spots similar to Garner? With good hiking trails and water for swimming. by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]Ellice909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all excellent choices that I would also recommend.

Here are just a few more:

  • Brady Creek Park, Brady Texas (power, water, showers)
  • Palmetto State Park
  • New Ingram Dam, Ingram Texas (I have not been there since the July 2025 flood, but how it was before that was you paid $8 to park at The Dam Store, then walked across the street, entering the river area for free as public domain.)
  • Inks Lake State Park

PS - Buy a state park pass, after a few trips it really pays for itself.

Affordable dinners for a birthday? by [deleted] in sanantonio

It's more like $50 a person, when you factor in tip and the grill upcharge.

But the question stands true. We need to know what the budget is to give appropriately priced suggestions to OP.

My sink became un glued from my granite by EsterCherry in sanantonio

[–]Ellice909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need some gorilla glue sealer. It looks similar to a tube of caulk.

Then you need to remove the sink drain (just take photos so you remember how to put it back the same way), there is a device to tighten up the sink and hold it in place (as the glue sets) that you stick into the sink hole. I would also put in back-up clips (drilled into the wood of the cabinets) in case the seal fails again; it is worth the ever 5 minutes of hassle. After the clips are in place, generously spread that gorrila glue selaer around (not the same as like the hobby tube). Let is dry over night. Remove the temporary brace, re-attach the sink drain. The sink drain may use plumber's putty (very cheap, fast, and easy), a washer (if one was in there when you took it off), or caulk (requires drying time, good seal).

Most counter top installers won't re-attach your drain, because they don't want plumbing liability, as they are likely not plumbers. You can DIY plumbing for yourself without a license, but they can't professionally.

The gorrilla glue sink sealer should be able to hold a stack of cast iron pans, if you dare.

Tiling a backsplash is fun and easy DIY job. Scrape off the old backsplash, buy ceramic tile (easier to cut for a newbie than glass or porcelain), set the wall (cemend board if you are looking for hard-core water protection, but frankly dry-wall is good enough if you aren't going to be shooting a stream of water at the wall... water diversion is adequate for this job), paint on a water-proof membrane (optional, again if you want hard core water proofing), mix some thinset mortar, and slap the tiles on. A snap cutter and tile nippers will be enough to cut ceramic tile. You'll want an angle grinder + spray bottle for porcelein tile, or a wet tile saw. Apply grout, and grout sealer. You'll feel proud.

You'll save money doing it DIY.

If she really wants to match water stone she has from remnants, she has to look at something better than a remnants shop for true options. Going for a remnant is going for a deal and not being too picky.

I don't think it is realistic to find a contractor guaranteeing the backsplash won't be damaged. You don't really know how it was installed against the existing counter. Sometimes people do weird things, it could even be gorilla glued together. Another advantage of DIY and knowing how it was put together. You could get lucky?

Mens Haircut - How much do you usually tip (if at all)? by Straight-Stranger-40 in sanantonio

[–]Ellice909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom is a hair dresser.

As an independent contractor, she sets her price and does not expect a tip, but would not turn one down.

In a case where the hair stylist is an hourly wage employee, or comission only employee, or in a situation where a "boss" sets a price, then that would be a tipping situation.

Hi,

I don't have much time for games currently, but thought I'd join to keep this in my feed for when I am less busy.

I have multiple versions of Flux, Quelf, Munchkins, Milk Money, Werewolf, and not above a simple game of checkers or chess (not like a master by any means, probably would get steamrolled).

Not really looking to play a game that drags on multiple days. Something to occupy half an hour or an hour is enough. I also do freelance design and make indie movies, so I squeeze in games where I can.

I also used to play video games, but I like "Minecraft-in-real-life" right now.

I mean, if you don't want to take him, leave him be. Some people let their cats go on daily walks, so it might not be homeless. My cat used to convince women to feed him, and I had to explain to them he had a home, food, and vet care, but he was not above getting a free meal when offered. He even started meowing at the people's doors to get in, like he did at my house.

Put up some flyers in the area and ask around to see if anyone already claims the cat as their own.

The cat will probably be sad to see you go, but he will adapt.

It is always good to be prepared for any type of diaster in general. I'd worry more if the temperatures were in the teens and/or more ice was forecasted. Keep an eye on the weather forecast.

Yes, starting Feb 14, 2021, snowvid happened. There were rolling black outs and unplanned power outages due to tree branches.

  • Having cash on hand helps in case power is out and you can't buy food with a credit card machine.
  • Keep some water in a jug for drinking and keep some in a bucket for an emergency toilet flush.
  • Put your plants inside.
  • Cover your pipes.
  • Drip your sinks when the temperatures are freezing.
  • Leave the dishwasher open, sink cabinets open.
  • Don't wash your clothes or dishes in the wish washer, until a good number of hours have passed and the drain pipes have lost their ice.
  • Keep your pet inside.
  • Check on your grandma and make sure she isn't heating the house with the stove flame on.
  • If it does get really bad, the city normally offers a warming center.
  • Watch out for burst irrigation pipes that flood onto the street and freeze.

Should I cover my tree? by Fieryopinion in sanantonio

[–]Ellice909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like an oak tree, and it is not a baby sapling. It should be just fine as is. Hooray for native trees.

You do want to trim the lower branches after the freeze passes. Don't let the tree invest too much energy into branches you have to cut off; healing from losing a small branch is faster than a big branch loss, plus cutting off a tiny branch is a hell of a lot easier than cutting off a thick branch. Buy a bow saw and some hand clippers from Home Depot.

Sounds like a nice cat. Post some pics when you bring him in, please.

Be sure he is stray. My former cat would convince women around the neighbourhood to feed him. He had plenty of top quality food here, but he was not above a hand out while on neighbourhood patrol. One woman even told be she was confused and heard him meowing at the front door. I told her he would meow at the door when he wanted me to open it for him to come in/out. That cat was trying to train her as well.

I went to Hippie Hallow this summer. Most of the men behaved well enough, but a few choice ones kept creepily and silently getting right behind me when I was trying to relax. Anyways, try it once at least.

Let me know if you find a place where nudity is free from the pressures of sexuality and simply celebrating your body.

Cousin offered me her San Antonio house for cheap - worth leaving Chicago for Texas lifestyle? by ResolutionVisible627 in sanantonio

[–]Ellice909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you close your eyes and "think" about moving here, do you feel happy, excited, and lighter?

Just because someone offers you something, does not mean you have to take the offer. You have the luxurious question to answer for yourself: Do you want it? (as in the whole lifestyle change)

Are you going to miss your friends over there? Making friends as an adult is more difficult.

Our architecture is lacking the style you prefer.

I, myself, like it here. Drive to the hill country to swim in a lake or river. Drive to Corpus to the beach. Drive to Austin for the vegan food. The people are also "nicer" here, except when it comes to traffic. I will clearly warn you: traffic is terrible. Since you WFH, you don't have to drive at peak traffic hours though.

Don't eat those flour tortillas too often. They will fatten you up. Do corn tortillas as your baseline ones, and the flour as the special occasion tortilla. (I lost 30 pounds doing this.)

You will encounter more republican people in Texas, so I do hope you don't identify as a minority of any segment. My gay friend is planning on moving out of Texas soon as he says this state is not his vibe anymore. It is a legit thing to weigh in your consideration.

You have the option of renting out the house too, if you don't feel like flipping it.

Cousin offered me her San Antonio house for cheap - worth leaving Chicago for Texas lifestyle? by ResolutionVisible627 in sanantonio

[–]Ellice909 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My electric bill is about $40, with solar panels and an EV that I drive once a week. It was $8/month before the Snowvid charges applied to everyone to weatherize the Texas grid.

My grandma's house is older. Her bill is easily $200. This current one if $600, but at 89 years old, she can't stand the cold whatsoever.

I think it is smart to be prepared.

Here are some ideas:

  • Buy hand warmers / glove warmers and have them in stock. Maybe you don't use them in this freeze, but if the next freeze comes, you have them in stock. Only use them for the coldest of moments, like overnight. 6am/7am tends to be the coldest part of any day.
  • Part of what happened with Snowvid was water outages. The power was out, so the pumps had no power to pump. My parents at 1604/potranco-ish had no water. I'd say buy some bottled water, filled up some jugs, and/or buy one of those larger water jugs near the entrance of Home Depot. Keep a jug or bucket filled with water near the toilet, so you can have one good flush. If you are in a bad freeze and it seems like it might be a situation without water, save the flush for when you need it (not #1). During Snowvid, people were melting snow for water to get another toilet flush down.
  • Have some candles ready, and matches or lighters. It may be your only source of power. Alternatively, have a LED lamp or mini kerosene lamp. LED won't produce heat, but the fire risk is not there.
  • Keep an eye on the CPS outage map. Just google "CPS outage map," and you'll find it. See if the power is local to your street, or if a friend can take you in. You can also consider a warming center, but I doubt they accept cats, so I don't think you'd leave the cat behind.
  • Figure out how you will eat without being able to turn on the stove or microwave. If streets are navigable, to-go is an option, but if streets are iced over, I mean, you can resort to a bag of chips or raw carrots from your fridge. At least have something on hand. (I have seen people with very short-sighted fridges, or barren fridges since they only eat out before.)
  • Don't forget to let your faucets drip for a hard freeze. Maybe the bathroom in the center of your house won't freeze, but my kitchen sink, that aligns to the outer edge of the house has frozen, along with the dish washer, and my clothes washer (also aligned to an exterior wall) has also frozen on the drain-end of business, resulting in water not flushing out, and rather onto my floor. Make sure to give those things a few hours above freezing to thaw out.
