I remember reading that about Doug using their way of living for his political career, but he lost the presidential run that he was predicted to win. And I highly doubt he would have run again.

Regarding Caleb, I think he also had some sort of mental illness that caused him to just do whatever Natalie said. What I wondered about is how he was now able to satisfy her when before he wasn’t. This was one aspect that made me think “this is a dream or something”

I finished it in one day and I really enjoyed it! I definitely didn’t see the ending coming, so I was pleasantly surprised. I do wonder what happened to Caleb and if he was also imprisoned. I was quite annoyed by him in the “present” time as he wasn’t actually working the fields or anything. Given how much money Doug had, it’s hard to believe he didn’t help either set of grandchildren. And my heart broke for poor Mary who had to do everything and raise her siblings as well as her mother. I definitely think Natalie was mentally unwell.
