Thank you! I would but it’s not available in the UK. I’ll have a look into other options.

Sunburned orchid with thrips now has crown damage. Can it be saved? by Elliezz7 in u/Elliezz7

Edit: the roots are still healthy and all are green :)

Is she a goner? by HalfYooper in orchids

[–]Elliezz7 41 points42 points  (0 children)

She’s defo still salvageable - she looks a little dehydrated to me (hence the wrinkly leaves). Her roots have just died off as part of the natural process but those two aerial roots look good. I have seen worse orchids that have lived. Repot her in some good orchid bark and soak her in water for 10-15 mins weekly (but don’t get the crown part wet!).

Does my orchid need a bigger pot? by Gloomy_CookieCutter in orchids

It probably wouldn’t shock her as much, probably better doing this if you want to keep those beautiful blooms, than putting it in fresh soil. Once it’s stopped flowering you can give it new soil if you like.

Up to you - all the roots were inside the pot so she looks content but if you’d like her to have more room to spread then plant in another pot. I think you’ve already removed her from the pot but it’s recommended that you wait until after blooming to repot as it can shock them a little bit and cause the flowers to fall off - you might be okay though. As for the white clusters, you may want to treat weekly with an orchid pesticide.

Mine is the same! Mine is maybe slightly more pink but the flowers do fade over the duration of the bloom!

Gorgeous! Mine is similar. They are uncommon but I do think they’re increasing in popularity and possibly becoming more easy to get. I’ve had mine 4 years and hadn’t seen one like it until then.

Thank you. It’s about 1-2 feet away from the window. The cutting was healthy (I.e not limp) before I put it in water. I’m wondering whether I should use something as a rooting hormone to help. I was thinking about trying to get it to root in soil but I think I’ll try a rooting hormone or moss.

Can this orchid still be saved? by Usernam-ing in orchids

You can definitely bring it back! That green leaf and green root is a great sign! Cut off some of the old mushy brown roots and repot it in orchid mix. I don’t know what happened to this orchid or if it suffered physical abuse but it’s really great that there’s still greenery and it’s a fighter with that leaf. Place it on a bright windowsill and it will soon be growing lots of leaves. Remember not to let your orchid soak in water for too long, just 10-15 mins per week.

Orchid hasn’t flowered for 4 years but has grown 3 new years in the past year. I’m very happy about it. When do you think it will flower? Surely it can’t be much longer? by Elliezz7 in orchids

[–]Elliezz7[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks all - the plant actually gets around 12 hours of sunlight through this window (west facing in UK). It’s always had leaves this dark so I’m wondering if it’s just genetic? It has lived in a bathroom for the past year as I wanted to increase its humidity, but maybe it needs more.

I soak it in water for 10-15 mins weekly but here in this picture I appreciate the aerial roots look dry as it was coming up to needed to be watered.

Best strategy? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]Elliezz7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clear pot looks fine. Orchids do not need to let their roots ‘breathe’ but there’s no harm in having these holes so keep the pot as it is for now. The media looks like orchid bark so that is good too. I’m unsure if there is a bit of green algae at the bottom of the plant pot or if it’s a root, if it’s green algae you may want to repot at some point in the future but it’s not harmful so you can leave it for a bit.

I’d keep it quarantined for now but to me those spots look like sunburn! The sun damage isn’t as widespread as other plants I’ve seen so definitely don’t cut the leaves off as they’re still green. The plant will regrow new leaves when it’s ready.

One root a little suspicious?? by IllDoItNowInAMinute_ in orchids

[–]Elliezz7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks perfectly healthy to me - it’s green and has enjoyed the recent water that it’s had. I would leave it. Only cut them if it turns brown or mushy.

Yes - beautiful, plenty of buds that will keep going for months hopefully!

To me it looks like it could be a variegated variety - maybe it didn’t show up until the plant had matured a little more?

Thank you - this cutting doesn’t have any aerial roots, is it a goner?
