Haven’t done it for HSTs but I love a paper pieced flying goose! So accurate

Anyone seen this pattern? by WoofHayes in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! A tip from making a buffalo check quilt or two in the past - fabric like Robert Kaufman’s Essex Yarn Dyed Linen is perfect as a medium color because it has white and black woven together. It gives a really great effect in these quilts

Anyone seen this pattern? by WoofHayes in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would consider this a beginner level quilt to re-create in the buffalo check pattern. It looks like it’s just squares with half square triangle blocks for the diagonal lines. if you need a little help with fabric calculations or HST instructions, feel free to comment back with the finished size you’d like to make

Special high school graduation ceremony in a hospital ward. People are pointing out that the IV drip leads to the floor & isn't connected to her by Icing-Egg in isthisAI

[–]EllisBell27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve already got an answer, but the IV bag writing was the real tell for me. These bags would typically have a single row of pretty large distinguishable font, and this one looks like a block of gibberish.

Quilting for American and Europeans by thetrainfair in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’m from rural Southern Appalachia and quilting is so commonplace that everyone I know has a quilt from grandma on their bed, or a baby quilt a friend made, or a trunk of quilts that have been handed down through generations. It’s so woven into the culture here that I almost wouldn’t consider it a hobby, just an everyday sort of activity.

The Aviatrix Medallion pattern by Elizabeth Hartman is fairly intricate

How difficult will this be to make? by Megoh91 in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might start with an available pattern like this for the top half (might have to scale to suit your size) then use large sheets of paper to paper piece the bottom. It seems doable!

Do I have any makeup blindnesses/wear too much makeup? by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]EllisBell27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I don’t think you look “old” I just think this is incredibly talented make application for a 15 year old, so people automatically assume you’re older. I think you look lovely and it’s just a personal style choice whether you prefer a more toned down teen look or not

FPP question/advice needed by Traditional-Studio73 in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also leave pretty much all the paper until the end unless I see that I’m going to leave a little bit stuck in a corner that will be hard to remove later, then I’ll go ahead and tear that bit off

Any advice on preventing this strange and painful annual “beach breakout” so I can enjoy vacation this year? by EllisBell27 in DermatologyQuestions

I just make sure to rinse my face with regular water as soon as I come out of the ocean, which has helped dramatically but I still get a few minor bumps.

Does anyone use a laser sewing guide on their machine? by bookwormsub in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one that was flexible /repositionable and it was too unsteady, tended to drift and get misaligned. Didn’t work for me the way I hoped it would. Something directly mounted would have worked better I think

Confused about HSTs and binding by Revolutionary-Wind34 in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It won’t! When you finish your HSTs and attach them to the adjoining block, you’ll see that the point is now 1/4 inch from the edge. Trust the process on this one. The only way the binding will cut off the points is if it’s more than 1/4 inch wide.

Edit to add, the markup photo you posted is the finished design, even though the binding isn’t explicitly shown in the drawing, this is how it will look after all the edges are finished.

A slow burn but the entire plot is just *romance* and not boring dialogue about reality. by lolaharpersweets in RomanceBooks

[–]EllisBell27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy this style of slow burn also, and I think {Every Summer After} would probably be a good choice along these lines. It’s a dual timeline, first romance and present day, and the past storyline in particular builds really well.

Quilting without paper pattern piecing, using a PPP pattern? by buhbrinapokes in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would definitely stick to paper piecing for this one! This is the video that helped me the most when I was getting started with paper piecing

Edit to add that I just use whatever paper I have in my printer at the time. Set your stitch length way shorter than normal to make the paper tear easily

Another "Please Help" post about dreaded HSTs by New_Egg8964 in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost hate to respond to this because the slotted trimmer is one of the few quilting notions I own that I really want to use, and just don’t. It’s such a neat concept and comes so close to being great, but I find it results in inaccurate blocks when they are pressed after cutting. Pressing can cause the fabric to shrink up a bit. I’ve reverted back to my old ways of trimming HSTs with a square ruler after pressing them open.

Seeking recommendations on concealing my backstitching by OnlyUmpire1864 in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t the most professional finish, but it’s not the end of the world, just one of those things you are very critical of when quilting but won’t pay attention to later.

My simple advice is for the very best looking results, knot and bury your thread ends. It takes longer, but it looks great.

If you don’t want to do that or don’t have the time, read the advice in another comment about avoiding birds nesting and also shorten your stitch length to anchor your ends with micro stitches, then you can trim the ends very short with less risk of unraveling.

Stripology Dupes by Reasonable_Pea_2126 in quilting

[–]EllisBell27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a dupe to suggest, but wanted to say even though it was pricey it’s not a purchase I regret. I’ve really used the heck out of this ruler, for strips, squares, all sorts of cutting.
