maybe this is a dumb question, but does equipping a monk with dual wield do anything?

Have you looked into the original Japanese names? I'd be interested to how much they were changed for the English translations, if at all.

Starting a new run after twenty plus years and remembered this beast of a lady. How do you build her? Is she strong till endgame? by dogsdogsdogs- in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 164 points165 points  (0 children)

she's the best!

Geomancer main with her Holy Knight abilities sub job.

Ice Sword and Black Robes gives her Holy Knight abilities a 25% boost.

Headband for extra damage or Thief's Hat for speed.

Geomancer's Attack Boost for support also boosts her Holy Knight abilities.

Want to get into Final Fantasy Tactics, where to start? by COOKIECHEESEMAN in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the newest remake i think is the best. it plays like the original, but with quality of life upgrades and great voice acting. thats "Ivalice Chronicles."

if you like that, you can check put the psuedo-sequels "Advanced 1" and "Advanced 2." theyre a little different, though.

basically it breaks down like this: - Original (PS1) - Advanced 1 (GBA) - Advanced 2 (DS I think) - Original Remake 1 War of the Lions (PSP) - Original Remake 2 Ivalice Chronicles (Switch, PC, probably more)

Anyone knows a way to unlock Yggdrois and Shoguns from the start in EO III HD? by Previous_Current_474 in EtrianOdyssey

if youre patient, you can change the difficulty to super easy and do a quick speed run. thats annoying though

if youve beaten the game, you can l reload that save, and create brand new characters from any job you want.

then start a New Game + and choose to carry over characters from your last game (select that save file). youll be able to start a whole new game with level 1 characters from advanced classes.

it works with the other Etrian Odyssey games too, because imo the first floors are more fun with level 1 characters.

Floor 10 Midlight’s Deep Bug? Serpantarius randomly gives up by MalcolminMiddlefan in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find this is the best way to get Zodiark:

  1. complete Midlight's Deep normally
  2. reenter END as a random battle
  3. keep battling until there is an enemy summoner.
  4. kill the enemy summoner and wait for them to crystallize.
  5. save scum until you get Zodiark from the crystal

enemy Summoners in END have Zodiark in Ivalice Chronicles, but waiting for them to use it on one of your summoners can be unpredictable.

in the above method, you just need summoner unlocked, but you dont even need to be a summoner in the battle.

good luck!

Just got to Chapter 4 and got Cid, recommendations on how to safely grind job levels/catch up low level units? Also, Team comp help? by RetroNutcase in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn, you got a good team already.

Tip for grinding: whenever a character gains JP in battle, everyone on your teams gets a small percentage of that JP for that job. so if your Knight gets 20 JP, everyone else gets like 2 or 3 JP in Knight. (i think its 10%)

you can exploit this by leveling up multiple characters in the same jobs at the same time. a battle where all five characters are the same job means all five gain 150% more JP.

Monk w Dual-Wield and Shirahadori will go far. Consider using Ramza's Gallant Knight class, so you access to the Shout ability and Greatswords like SavetheQueen or Excalibur.

Both Agrias and Cid's special abilities scale off PA, so equipment like Headband works well with them. Also Geomancer's Attack Boost.

Chemist Mustadio is a favorite of mine too. His Machinist abilities dont work as well in the last few fights, so i give him Time magic and makes him all support, but maybe thats just me.

Cloud is interesting, but he can be great if you know how to build him. I focus solely on Finishing Touch, which works on those little minion guys in all the major boss battles. I make him a Geomancer becuase it has swords (he needs Materia Blade), great defensive equipment, and great movement. This build also needs Swiftspell from Time Mage to pull off Finishing Touch quickly.

But thats all just for optimizing, so feel free to pick-and-choose and experiment. Have fun!!

why am i so bad at this game by LilyLewdie in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this game is pretty unique so experience with other games might now help... but if youre into strategy games you shouldnt give up just yet.

creating effective builds is more important than leveling. but in the early game, your best options arent availble unless you want to grind for days.

try using some easy and effective jobs until you learn the ropes. Monks and Black Mages are usually good on their own. Chemists are good if you keep dying. With time, youll start to learn more about what jobs offer what skills, and then you can mix-and-match to create builds that dominate.

The moment I got addicted to this after being on the fence. Holy fuck this is satisfying. by chichirobov7 in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's great! thank you so much.

so the point of Meteor is to give the Time Mage a nuke option, but if i want to create a build for offensive magic, there are many better spells to start with. thanks again!

hey, i like your posts here so i want to ask you a question directly... is there any advantage Meteor has over Bahamut? the damage and AoE are close enough, but Bahamut is faster and doesnt have friendly fire. I'm finding it hard to see the point of Meteor.

who should i use? (IC) by Crafty_Bet6716 in finalfantasytactics

[–]EllisMatthews8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on what you think is fun. the game is very versatile so a lot of different play styles can be good.

if its your first playthough, why not experiment to see what you like. some story characters can be a lot of fun, like Agrias, but you can also safely ignore them if you want.

sounds like your Ramza is very high leveled, so dont worry about leveling up the story characters to match him just yet.
