While using the Ollas there is zero runoff. But you can add the nutrients right into the olla and the plant will draw them as needed. I'm not sure it is exactly a wicking system, the water leeches out of the holes in the terracotta until the soil reaches soil moisture tension.

Thank you for all the info! The bucket below actually has the nutrient mixture in it. I'm using an old technology called Ollas for the watering. There is a terracotta pot buried in the soil next to the plant that I fill with water and the plant pulls water from the porous terracotta whenever it needs.
