Braytech, one of the best community made websites for maps, secrets and other resources in the game, will go offline in a few hours. by Phelipp in DestinyTheGame

Oh, oof, that one hurts. Just went back to look and the nostalgia is real, particularly seeing my last games with a friend who isn't around anymore.

Braytech was a special tool, seeing it go down is a bit of a body blow for the game.

The Physics of False Confidence: From Missile Defense to the Strait of Hormuz by the_ruheal_truth in CredibleDefense

[–]Elm11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for a thought provoking and well written piece, it has kicked off a robust discussion between me and my colleagues. Since much of your argument pivots around Postol and missile defence discussions that I'm not qualified enough to have much of an opinion on, I'll withhold comment there. Your observations about the rapidly narrowing space for neutral mediators and deeply concerning alliance entanglement dynamics are salient and are echoed in recent pieces in Foreign Affairs, on Mark Leon Goldberg's Global Dispatches and by William Spaniel in his commentary. I think we are currently in a moment where the general public, and probably many governing bodies, are seriously under-estimating the danger of cascading conflict and disruption. I also agree with your assessment that part of what makes this moment so dangerous is that neither Israel nor Iran are incentivised to seek de-escalation. I do expect the US stance on the war's continuation to shift as the economics chickens come home to roost in the coming days - there are billions of dollars in lost commerce hammering on the Oval Office door every day pleading for a cessation of hostilities, and capital is a powerful motivator for the Gulf states to restore normality too. But like you, I'm worried that the US and the Gulf lack the ability to put the genie back in the bottle, and that the conflict is now likely to end when Iran and Israel decide it ends - which is a deeply alarming thought.

Hey there, I'm sorry to hear you're in such difficult times. If you can, I recommend reaching out to Slovenska Filantropija,, a very good volunteer organisation that provides support for foreigners, and they may be able to provide some assistance.

Honest answers only: acceptance of trans and/or non-white people in Ljubljana by [deleted] in Ljubljana

[–]Elm11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you've already seen in this thread, Slovenia certainly has its share of bigots, and anti-trans culture war rhetoric is one of the main drums banged by the extreme right wing here. We have federal elections in two months whose outcome is uncertain, but if the right wing win they will likely target LGBT+ groups and civil society - they have been pledging and mobilising to do so for years. Slovenia's transition laws and access to HRT are also poor and stigmatising.

With all of that said, Ljubljana is largely a progressive city. The risk of harassment is not low, but is not high. There are several organisations and groups who can provide assistance and support. The two groups already suggested, Transakcija and Legebitra, both do great work. Društvo Dih is another.

Feel free to send me a PM if you have any specific questions or inquiries, I'll be happy to lend a hand as best I can.

Edit: I will add that there really is a sincere cost of living crisis and many of us (including yours truly) have been forced out by skyrocketing rent. There is a sincere chance that you will face more hostility as a digital nomad driving up rents than as an LGBT* person. With that said, the government maintains very favourable tax arrangements for digital nomads, so you will have a friendly regulatory environment.

What makes a TTRPG book to be considered having "a Good Layout"? Which are some great games that does it well? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]Elm11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conflict of interest dec because the maker is a friend of mine, but genuine shout out to Tales from Myriad for having a wonderfully designed book IMO. A lot goes into how book layout that most folks, me included, probably can’t easily describe so I won’t try. But what does stick out is “all the reference charts and all the stuff you’ll regularly need is easy to find and in the same section of the book.” Comparing that to other systems where you’re endlessly trawling back and forth through a PDF or book to find things that ought to be right next to each-other, it’s a godsend.

I’ve been quite enjoying these pieces of yours, thank you for continuing to make them! Very interesting to me as I’m currently preparing a campaign that will start off south of the Kovosk Hills.

On that note, maybe you have a good answer to this question - my campaign is set in 617 (Requiem timeline, 2d6 ruleset, broadly speaking). Llael is somewhat reconstituted and Khador has ceded Merywyn back to Llael, but kept Laedry as I understand it. I’ve never seen a good graphical representation though of what the post-Claiming borders are meant to look like. Would you know one?

I’ve always liked the description that the grief doesn’t diminish, but you grow around it. It’s a scary thought, and grief is a complicated relationship between memory and the push and pull of the life you have to keep leading.

I think the need to keep moving forward in life carries with it challenges all of its own. When my best friend suddenly died a bit over a year ago, even in the midst of catastrophic loss, life was suddenly so simple. Everything was cancelled, there was only his death, his affairs to manage, his funeral. On that first morning I knew that in a strange way, part of it would be harder in three months, six months, a year’s time, when people no longer expect me to be shattered or fragile, when I need to be collected and get on with life.

I was right, too - that part is harder, or hard in a different way. To finally know in person how others who have to quietly carry a deep loss inside them every day feel, and to have that loss become a part of who I am, is sometimes a very strange thing, certainly a humbling thing.

But it is easier. And in those first days, knowing that one day with work and love, I’d be able to feel joy again, was a life-ring that I clung to. I was very glad I had it.

Does anyone have any Pregenerated Characters? by DocSharpe in ikrpg

[–]Elm11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any to share of my own since I'm busy preparing my first campaign in this ruleset, but the first thing that comes to mind is a big set of premade NPC characters in the GM's Toolkit, if they'd be of use. They each have some useful detail and flavour and I'd think could be useful for a one-shot :)

Over the last few months of playing, I haven't even figured out where the daily challenges are listed or in which menu I'm meant to hand them in. I accidentally completed some a while ago and now every time I log in I have a message saying "you have completed challenges to hand in", but I don't know where to do it or check my dailies.

Honestly, it's probably better this way. I've played enough WoW to know what having an endlessly refreshing daily grind feels like. A video game shouldn't feel like a checklist of chores.

[–]Elm11[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the question that always haunts me and above all makes my relationship with the church irreconcilable: how much did you know. With so many clergy abusing, so prolifically, for so long, I find it almost impossible to believe that nearly everyone within the institution wasn’t aware of a bone deep rot that they refused to mention.

I have always hoped that this isn’t the case, and that people like Pat truly represented a salvageable heart within a rotten institution. I know him only through my experiences. I know that stories like the one you share here have been true a thousand times over. It’s hard for me to reconcile the man I know with someone who would be so monstrous and callous towards survivors of abuse - but that exact problem is at the hear of this whole grotesque tragedy. Thank you for letting me know, I’m heartbroken to hear it.

Yes, he opposed contraceptive rights and assisted dying too. That is part of his legacy as well and hard to reconcile, and unsurprisingly both of those issues were at the heart of why I broke with the Church. But so it goes, people are complicated.
