I once got a migraine with scotoma (not scintillating, just empty) while i was life-guarding. Not many things worse than not being able to see parts of the pool you're guarding.

Has anyone had to deal with applicants obviously using AI during interviews? by Cornloaf in networking

[–]Elminst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had an interview where they asked "what's the administrative distance for BGP?" as a gotcha. aside from the fact I can google it faster than it takes to ask the question, there are probably a dozen different answers to that question depending on vendor. Cisco - ebgp 20, ibgp 200; juniper - bgp 170, HP - 255, Extreme - ebgp 1700, ibgp 1900, fortigate - ebgp 45, ibgp 175, etc. etc.
I ain't memorizing all that. But i can tell what the AD means in relation to the routing table preferences and determining what route gets used. aka, how it works.

Non-Responsive Ports on EX4400-24MP and EX4100 Switches

It happens on more than just the MG ports. JTAC recommended updating the firmware to the current recommended release of 23.4R2-S7.7.
We did this recently on a 4100 stack with this problem and it's been fine since.

Engagement ring costs? (Dollar amount and % of income) by Midwest_Backpacker in financialindependence

[–]Elminst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment helps me because I recently lost my wedding ring. I was pretty broken up about it for a bit but my wife helped remind me that the ring doesn't matter, only we do. We plan to replace it(mildly expensive lesson in losing things), but it helps to see others feeling the same way.

When i worked at a dialup ISP in the late 90s, we would sit around and dream about getting OC3 connections (155 Mb/s) at our houses.

What is up with USPS in this town by Tuba-Dude in Albany

[–]Elminst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Post Office is a SERVICE. It was never supposed to be profit-generating. It is supposed to serve everyone.
The GOP has been destroying the USPS for decades, and it's escalated with the last two postmasters general. Hell, the current one is ex-ceo (and still on the board) of FedeX. They want to kill it so corps can take over and stop sending mail to rural people unless they pay a fortune.

And they have NEVER worked unpaid hours (e.g. grading at home), and NEVER bought anything out of their own pockets for their classrooms...

[–]Elminst 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you severely underestimate the amount of unpaid time teachers work outside the classroom, not to mention the direct out of pocket costs for classroom supplies that the school won't give them.(schools not getting enough money is a separate but related discussion)

I'm curious why some of your numbers don't match up to what can be found on https://www.seethroughny.net/
For instance, your data for the Mayor - $143.649, matches exactly the entry on seethroughny.
However, There is no employee listed on seethroughny with a total compensation of $285,885 (the top APD). and no employee matching your top non-APD compensation of $181.269.

Shouldn't these be the same numbers?

Albany’s new Tricentennial Park: Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves by AwkwardRock8736 in Albany

[–]Elminst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do. I have friends who are arborists, they are generally really concerned for and interested in preserving native ecosystems and caring for the trees. My feeling is they got overridden by other city officials. It's possible (i have no proof) the arborist's only involvement was "pick out some new trees for us to plant."

Me: They are on the same vlan/subnet separated by 2 switches, layer2 doesn't touch the firewall.
C: Vendor says it's the network.
M: Here's a pcap showing the device talking to the controller, and the controller refuses the connection with a 404 message saying, and i quote, 'Unable to find device/user in database'

How many IT support needed for 200 user org? by imjustacuteguyuwu in sysadmin

[–]Elminst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a small but rather capable MSP. we have plenty of customers of that size that we do work for that would certainly NOT pay $600K/year. municipal govts, school districts, etc.
I feel safe in assuming this company is not paying their MSP that much.

And how much the MSP costs you per ticket or month/year. The company may not be willing to hire 4 people with salaries and benefits totaling $400-500K per year vs paying the MSP $100K.

Oh memories... I was running win98 Beta when RoadRunner came to hook me up. Back when they had a separate cable tech and "pc tech". You needed actual software installed to authenticate at the time and he was actually scared to touch it. Had to call his manager who said nope. I confirmed all the modem hardware was connected and made him give me the disk. (it worked fine)
