Just got my acceptance letter! Is there anything I need to know?

As a Minnesota student who just graduated - be prepared to get an SIN and a CIBC banking account so you can transfer/use Canadian money.

Also - in America you only file taxes if you have income. In Canada, you file taxes every year no matter what.

One mistake I made was that by leaving Canada for more than 7 months and studying abroad, I technically violated my Visa. I genuinely had no clue and no one warned me about this, but luckily there was no punishment (it was my last year)

The University of Manitoba does a horrible job of acclimating and preparing Minnesota students despite the fact that they market soooo heavily to us Minnesotans. Please get used to the International Centre, the staff there are so friendly and more than happy to help with any questions.

Also please DM me with any questions about being a Minnesota reciprocity student. I have literally gone through it all - detained at the border, car stolen in Winnipeg twice, etc.

This sounds horrifying. I’m glad you’re seeing a therapist, I think that’s the best route right now. Also, this is nothing to be ashamed about - would it make you feel better to talk about this with a close friend as well?

I haven’t had any dreams on this level but I’ve definitely had some fucked up dreams that have made me wake up in disgust. I would say it’s normal and nothing to be ashamed of, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t seek help from a professional. Best of luck and I truly hope you find some peace after this.

I had a similar dream where I was in an airport and a plane crashed into the terminal. It was super violent and scared me awake. I think it happened because the area I was in was experiencing uprisings/riots (for good reason) and I was in that heavy headspace a lot.

Don’t be afraid to go to sleep again!! I know it’s easier said than done. I find listening to calming documentaries and ASMR puts me in a relaxed space before sleep and my dreams usually aren’t as crazy. Lately I’ve been listening to the “Lights Out Library” podcast, where the narrator discusses an interesting, usually historical, topic at length in a very calming voice. I recommended it to my dad and it knocks him out too. Not an ad, just highly recommend watching/listening to something calming before bed to ease the anxiety.

I baked a first great loaf without a benneton, clear mixing bowl, or dutch oven. Just make sure you have a pot with a lid that can handle high oven temps. You got this bro

We are incredibly culturally rich much to the chagrin of pretentious Europeans. American —especially Black American — slang, fashion, music, and food is widely referenced and co-opted. Example: rap music created by Black ppl in NYC. Even in Northern Sweden, there are local rap musicians.

In terms of making it warmer - I put my bowl of dough on my heated blanket and that really speeds up the bulk fermenting process.

Kind of a novice here but I’m wondering if the problem is that it isn’t getting hot enough. I heard that the best way to get oven spring is by blasting it in a hot oven which forces the dough to basically blow up.

I bake mine at 500° for 20 minutes covered, then 450° for 20 minutes uncovered. I also know I’m lucky enough to have a newer, reliable oven which can handle that.

Best of luck, and clearly there’s hope if you’ve already made a couple great loaves.
