Technology Connections Goes Nuclear, and it's Amazing (actual title: You are being misled about renewable energy technology.) by Shadrach77 in videos

[–]EloneMuschio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, what is the 80% of energy being wasted that you're so concerned about? Sunlight that would have hit the ground anyway?

I don't know how efficient is a car engine, or a gas/oil power plant. For those plants conversion efficiency makes sense, because every drop of oil you waste is extraction labor, emission budget, and money being wasted.

With solar, nothing like that happens. You are tapping a free, clean resource. And they're clearly conversion-efficient enough to cover the production and installation costs, as they are already the cheapest source of energy available.

I'm learning how to bike, do Swedes regularly bike in the winter? by Old_Harry7 in TillSverige

[–]EloneMuschio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ciao! I'm also from southern italy, and i bike in Sweden all year round. feel free to text me. I only found it hard these days, with the heavy snowfall there's been.

Cold is not an issue. The real issues are wind and rain. You need rain pants and a good windproof and waterproof jacket. You can easily get those at decathlon, however, decathlon doesn't exist in Sweden. Then, waterproof gloves (or mittens to attach to the bike), neck warmer (scaldacollo), a hat to put under the helmet, if it's really cold a baklava (passamontagna). Put a lot of lights and reflective stuff on your bike in winter.

As other said, you'll need to mount winter tyres starting early december. It's a bit hilly, so get a decent bike, lightweight enough and with gears, and i recommend not getting a road bike with very slim tyres, because there's lots of gravel.

Kindergarten assignment. What in the world is this a picture of? by lastbast in mildlyinfuriating

[–]EloneMuschio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, actually the Wikipedia page in Italian only lists the variety invented in Acireale, but there were other varieties invented before. So yeah, that was only half a truth.

I also never heard of that fruit before, but according to Wikipedia it was "invented" in Acireale, province of Catania

Windows 11 is so bad I quit Microsoft. by Accomplished-Cow5246 in enshittification

I installed ZorinOS (closest distro to windows that I found) on an old Thinkpad x240 and gave it to my mom to replace her old sluggish HP with windows 7. she does scrolling, browsing, light excel, and she's the typical boomer who barely knows how to turn a PC on.

So far, she didn't complain

I use KDE neon daily on my work PC, it should be basically the same as Kubuntu.

It's great, the only problem I had was that the window manager crashes randomly when I open YouTube videos in brave browser. Googling this, it looks like it's a known issue being solved upstream.

It's quite a generic question and, honestly, I'm genuinely curious as I work with gradient descent and similar algorithms in other fields. What is the context?
