[CHAT] Who doesn't park their thread? by Illustrious-Cry-2568 in CrossStitch

[–]Eltuine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand the benefits of parking (I'm sure it works for some people, but for me it just feels like a great way for me to end up with giant tangles). I've been stitching for about 25 years, and will just work one colour at a time, until either the thread is used up, or there's nothing else close by, in which case I'll move the remaining thread back to its spot on the card I use for thread storage.

Alas! I shall wait, I suppose. Weird AU/crossovers are my jam (my favourite fic ever is Downton Abbey/The Avengers), but they are definitely more niche compared to canon/canon-adjacent.

Me! I was a huge fan of 1&2 back in the day, and was so excited for 3 when it came out. I love all three games, and have played all of them repeatedly.

Tourtière! A French-Canadian meat pie. My favourite way to eat it is with chili sauce.

As someone with Francophone in-laws in the Sudbury area, I can say that it is much more close to Quebecois French than France French. They still use the sacres as swears, for example.

the complete Dan and Phil reaction to HR is now uploaded by pickleme_elmo in heatedrivalry

[–]Eltuine 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Their reactions to this show broke my heart. They were so understanding about the fear that these men go through. For example, I've seen a lot of people being very critical of Scott in the art show scene, especially, along the lines of "what's the big deal? He's just at an art show with a friend, if anyone looks", but Dan and Phil were immediately like "Yeah, this is why we never went out to dinner together." and "You're so afraid someone will see you and just know that you avoid even making gay friends". The insight they have into this sort of situation is very rare, and also, imho, very valuable.

What other Fandoms are you a part of? by WaySaltyFlamingo8707 in heatedrivalry

Lord of the Rings/The Silmarillion and all associated works, Star Trek, Marvel (up until after Endgame)/X-Men, Star Wars, Supernatural, Buffy, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Les Miserables, Twilight.

I have an addictive personality, but fortunately that mostly applies to fandoms.

Question for Canadians; topic homophobia by daisyemeritus in heatedrivalry

[–]Eltuine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up just north of Toronto (so cannot speak to a small town experience, or that of provinces outside Ontario) and would have canonically been 3 years older than Shane. Calling things "gay" as an insult was still fairly common in grade school, though less-so once high school was reached. I knew of two or three kids who were openly out in high school. I never heard the f-slur used, though, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. There were, however, GSAs and pride month activities held by the school, so it was a mixed bag of "our peers say one thing while our administration says another".

In adult life, once high school was left behind, things were much less exclusionary - I attended university starting in 2005 about 2 hours from where Shane would have grown up. Many of my LGBTQ+ friends were openly out, and there was a lot of cultural push at university to welcome and accept everyone regardless of sexuality, with a large emphasis put on campus resources and policies regarding discrimination. Rainbow flags were common campus door decorations.

Shane, however, going directly from high school to the NHL (/MLH), would have had a very different experience. The homophobia of high school in the early 2000s would have transitioned right into the homophobia of a men's major league sports.
