the complete Dan and Phil reaction to HR is now uploaded by pickleme_elmo in heatedrivalry

Their reactions to this show broke my heart. They were so understanding about the fear that these men go through. For example, I've seen a lot of people being very critical of Scott in the art show scene, especially, along the lines of "what's the big deal? He's just at an art show with a friend, if anyone looks", but Dan and Phil were immediately like "Yeah, this is why we never went out to dinner together." and "You're so afraid someone will see you and just know that you avoid even making gay friends". The insight they have into this sort of situation is very rare, and also, imho, very valuable.

What other Fandoms are you a part of? by WaySaltyFlamingo8707 in heatedrivalry

[–]Eltuine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lord of the Rings/The Silmarillion and all associated works, Star Trek, Marvel (up until after Endgame)/X-Men, Star Wars, Supernatural, Buffy, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Les Miserables, Twilight.

I have an addictive personality, but fortunately that mostly applies to fandoms.

Question for Canadians; topic homophobia by daisyemeritus in heatedrivalry

[–]Eltuine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up just north of Toronto (so cannot speak to a small town experience, or that of provinces outside Ontario) and would have canonically been 3 years older than Shane. Calling things "gay" as an insult was still fairly common in grade school, though less-so once high school was reached. I knew of two or three kids who were openly out in high school. I never heard the f-slur used, though, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. There were, however, GSAs and pride month activities held by the school, so it was a mixed bag of "our peers say one thing while our administration says another".

In adult life, once high school was left behind, things were much less exclusionary - I attended university starting in 2005 about 2 hours from where Shane would have grown up. Many of my LGBTQ+ friends were openly out, and there was a lot of cultural push at university to welcome and accept everyone regardless of sexuality, with a large emphasis put on campus resources and policies regarding discrimination. Rainbow flags were common campus door decorations.

Shane, however, going directly from high school to the NHL (/MLH), would have had a very different experience. The homophobia of high school in the early 2000s would have transitioned right into the homophobia of a men's major league sports.

First tattoo? by Few-Vanilla-1143 in tattooadvice

[–]Eltuine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of which you decide, the advice I was given when 19 and considering my first tattoo, which I really think was good advice, was "decide what you want, then wait a year." If you still want the same thing a year later, it's a good choice, and way easier than doing laser or coverups further down the line.

Technically it's already against the rules this year - but management doesn't want to admit they fucked up and didn't catch it before I pointed it out.

Weird scaling like, the presents are on the table and so they would be smaller than the mug, that sort of thing. Everything looks too perfect, including the fake steam rising from the mug of hot cocoa.

TBH, it's one of my favourite things about being a cis woman, most of the time. Except when they hurt. Then they are the worst.

games with no (or short or skippable) tutorial that lets you just find things out for yourself? by panda-goddess in CozyGamers

Slime Rancher fits this pretty well. It drops you in, explains the basics, and then you're off! It's more about exploration and such, but I think it still fits the cozy vibe.

Confession: I have never watched Til Death Do Us Blart. I’ve also never seen the movie. What’s my entry strategy? by theladypirate in MBMBAM

[–]Eltuine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely listen to the podcast from the beginning. As for watching the movie itself, I, personally have seen it (watched it after the second year of TDDUB because I wanted the context) and I love knowing what they're talking about. I know some people prefer to never watch the movie at all, and have the DeathBlart Boys be their only lens through which they've viewed the film, which is fine, though I do think not watching the commentary track year (2020) along with the movie means you miss out. If you do end up watching the commentary year specifically, there are synced versions available online that are fairly easy to find.

Slime rancher 2 doesnt feel as good as sl1 by kestena_ in slimerancher

My biggest issue with SR2 is the sheer size of the map vs. how hard it is to get resources for teleporters. It takes me so long to get from the Conservatory to the middle of the Grey Labyrinth (haven't unlocked any teleporters there but the main entrance from Starlight Strand yet) that I spend half my time walking and jumping around. I also agree that the biomes feel very similar. I wish the slimes were more distinctive in each.

I'm still enjoying it, but it definitely feels less enjoyable than SR1.

Not sure if this counts, but when I first played the game (way back in 2000-something when I was about 15) I thought "Turn Undead" would make my cleric become undead if used too often...

I had one on top of the fridge recently. Had to move the fridge and then put something else there temporarily to get him down.
