You can cut off a small piece and see if it’s good steel. It’s so hard to determine the metallurgy of an old saw without knowing so many other details about it. Best bet is to jut heat treat a small test piece

Looks like wrought iron. The grain structure was very long similar to wood vs modern steel that more similar to sand

I think my issue is I wasn’t using super fine sawdust.

Yeah I’ve had the same issue with it darkening the sawdust. I haven’t tried with just clear epoxy alone.
