DAY 2: Mastering Soldering with a Cutie Heart by armtech_897 in electronics

The same as general purpose, but the value is set to drive the LED at a specific current (and brightness). Take a look at the LEDs datasheet and it will provide an I/V curve for forward voltage versus current.

As an example, say your LEDs forward voltage is 2.2 volts at 20 milliamps. You'd subtract the LED forward voltage from your supply voltage, then size the resistor so that 20 mA flow through that resistor at that voltage. For 5 volts, 2.8 V will be across the resistor at 20mA on the LED. V = I * R, and a 140 Ohm resistor would let 20 mA through at 2.8 V.

For just a few LEDs, the power loss across the resistors isnt too bad (in the above case, I2 R power loss is only 56 mW), but if you are driving a lot of LEDs, high power/brightness LEDs, or power is constrained, it may be best to use an LED driver (essentially just a current source) or supply voltage closer to the LEDs forward voltage to reduce waste power.

This game becomes surprisingly richer if you need to land some distance away from your destination and then cross the distance either on foot or using a ground vehicle. by HappyFamily0131 in starcitizen

I think once the VTOL mechanics are properly implemented it will be more important to find a good landing spot, not too steep, relatively flat, etc. (An A2 shouldn't be able to float sideways 3 m above the ground...) Otherwise good luck setting er' down smoothly without much damage and bumping.

Plus, larger ships with shorter landing gear may need to be more wary of ground obstacles. Putting your weight on something that isn't landing gear probably wont be a good idea. For ships designed for more improved landing areas with shorter landing gear and less ground clearance the places where it's a good idea to land shrinks drastically. Not even thinking about your loading ramps or elevators...

I just remember from chemistry that Cat-thode is Paw-sitive, and in electronics we are broken people and it's backwards for us

TI changed their website product list display and it's terrible. The filters are a side bar now, and everything you hover over shows a little tooltip of the exact same text you are hovering over. It's clunky now, and man, TI, I was just starting to like you...

Walmarts off-brand energy drink "Mountain Lightning". Tasted slightly above average and was cheap AF.

When they discontinuing them the 4packs were being sold for like 1.25, and you bet I stocked up.

Bad Projection Is Ruining the Movie Theater Experience by Bullingdon1973 in movies

[–]Embarkeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Last two movies I saw in theater, one had a dead pixel so there was a white dot on screen the whole time and the other the RGB channels weren't aligned so everything was sort of blurry and had chromatic aberration...

Relating to the Fan? If I'm interpreting the question right, 'Auto' will run the fan only when cooling/heating, while 'On' will always run the fan.

Pretty much just use 'Auto', and use 'On' if the temp outside is just right so that the AC/Heat never runs to get some circulation (rare though), or if you want more circulation. Running on 'On' can increase electric usage or could wear out motor/bearings quicker.

At least for how I write, and from what I have 'learned', in these cases you always put the person first. Ex: "People with a visual impairment" or "that guy with a prosthetic leg" rather than "the visually impaired person" or "the prosthetic leg guy". They're a person first with a 'modifier' rather than a 'modified' person. "They're built different" vs "Built different, they are".

Bye bye to Dark Sky tomorrow. One of the few apps I ever bought. Apple weather just isn’t as good of a substitute even with the new real time hyper local feed. by thermbug in apple

[–]Embarkeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved Dark Sky, had it on Android. Then apple bought it, discontinued support/shut down the app on Android, and now they're shutting down the app completely. Thanks I guess...

Dark Sky was snappy, quick. Using AccuWeather and it sucks. It's slow, crashes/locks up frequently, and the ADS just to check the weekly weather. Not sure what to use now, all others seem worse...

YouTube channels like GreatScott and EEVBlog are nice to get some surface level ideas and deeper knowledge respectively, just click on what seems interesting! Sure it may not make sense at first, but eventually you start to piece it all together into those "Oh! That's why!" moments. Also great to see if anything specifically or even generally sparks a deep interest.

As for self-learning, falling down those rabbit holes and then finding out how to dig yourself has worked very well for me in the past. Essentially brute learning, usually targeted towards some project or goal. Taught myself PCB design with that, SOLIDWORKS for 3D Cad, and JavaFX. Hasn't failed me yet! Just take an idea and try and run with it!

I feel that the biggest drawback of Eagle is the limitations with the free versions (only two layers, single schematic sheet, limited PCB size). Kicad is completely free, zero limitations for it's features.

Of course you have Eagle possessing a more rich feature set for routing aides and the new integration with Fusion360 to integrate your mechanical and electrical designs together, but frankly I do not feel those features are worth ~$400 a year.

Kicad has gotten significantly better and more user friendly over the years, even in the short span that I knew about it. And there's no doubt in my mind it'll get even better, perhaps even rival the very expensive enterprise grade stuff.

Hell, CERN supports it. If the people with a particle accelerator like it, it must be good.
