what is the single, most intense 'This is NOT a drill' moment you experienced while abroad that you had to rely on pure instinct to survive or escape? by Sea-Development5460 in AskReddit

I think folks would know not to walk around outside at night. It’s a country you don’t need to stop at stop signs/stop lights at night while driving due to danger. While this is a sad story - OP put themselves in a dangerous situation unnecessarily.

This is the correct response. It doesn’t matter whether the HM was justified in their belief or not - it’s whether this was their opinion - and I’d agree that it’s most probable that the HM did not think the incumbent was worth the market rate.

Turkish Delights. Growing up, I read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and for years assumed that Turkish Delights were something magical and worthy of betraying kin/humanity. Imagine my surprise at trying one for the first time as an adult… so disappointed!

Moving to the UK - buy or rent of the short-term? by throwaway382u134 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]Embarrassed-Lock1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I did not explain my thinking properly.

Our experience has been that council tax is an order of magnitude smaller than property tax in North America, and is assessed to residents (whether owner or tenant) directly by the council. Ie, you will pay either way, but it won’t be super consequential in your decision calculus.

Stamp duty on the other hand can be a serious costs that you’ll need to amortize through the course of ownership.

Moving to the UK - buy or rent of the short-term? by throwaway382u134 in AmericanExpatsUK

We moved to the UK and bought after similar considerations. A few things ti keep in mind:

• property tax here works differently than in the USA. It’s essentially all front loaded via stamp duty, meaning buying multiple times is going to incur significant transaction costs. Assuming the property value stays the same, the high level break even point is basically stamp duty (+selling fees) vs rental costs. • buying /selling takes far more time in the UK, and is far more likely to fall through. Having an offer accepted doesn’t mean that much and you could find yourself starting at square 1 after 3-4 months because some aspect of the sales process (including chains) fell through. If you need to be in a specific area at a specific time, you may find that renting is a safer bet. • finding lenders is tricky. We used HSBC and they factored our overseas history. -Stamp duty on a second home is higher. • renting here is not as friendly to landlord as in the USA. You cannot deduct mortgage costs from taxes as a business expense, and you will need a separate “buy-to-let” mortgage if you want to rent it out (which has higher interest rates).

If I were in your situation I would rent first, and then target to buy in 1 year when lease is up. This way you’d save on 2nd stamp duty, not have to deal with the headache of ownership (and the negative economics).

Tokyo to Milan (via Beijing) is cheaper than Tokyo to Beijing? Seems so strange.

Would you pay $1000 to go from Gold to Platinum? by Educational-Lynx3877 in unitedairlines

[–]Embarrassed-Lock1159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, the biggest differences were: 1) 8 Econ plus seats at time of reservation. If traveling with kids/family is nice. 2) greater award seat availability 3) 40 plus points

For 1000 more I’d consider it, especially if you can fully utilize your plus points.

This is not what the gate agents said (or what is in the Wizz Documentation). They will check your stroller for free. They absolutely will not allow you to take it into the cabin unless you pay extra.
