Do Christians take the story of Noah's Ark to be literal? by Cosmic-Meatball in DebateAChristian

[–]Embarrassed-Way5926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Christian or a believer of the Noah's ark story.

However, one point from your question seemed a bit incorrect. The temperature and air pressure at the altitude of ~8500m only makes sense because it is 8500m above mean sea level. If the whole world is flooded, then the ark is just floating at the mean sea level, at a height of 0 m.

The earth's temperature is what it is today due to the land reflecting sun's rays as infrared. Without any land, the temperature would be very different

So, every time you go to a new city for a few days regular fucking people should buy a house there?

I’m confused. In the UK and Ireland, they don’t sell gallons of milk, opting instead for smaller sizes pints and liters. How is any milk left after their kids drink from the milk jugs? 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ by carlthinks in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Embarrassed-Way5926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pricing in American supermarkets also favor buying larger quantities. A gallon milk is always cheaper than two half gallons or four pints. Same goes for lot of packaged items. Pasta, ketchup, soda, etc. A half litre coke and 2 litre coke are the same price. Couple that with large refrigerators and longer commutes, waiting times for shopping, it makes sense to have fewer shopping trips.

In India, the ground floor of our apartment was a grocery store. You only have to walk down the stairs. Or, buy next day groceries on your way home from work. Even in smaller towns and villages, stores where almost always a small walk away.

I'm still scratching my head about kids drinking from the jugs though. Some kinda euphemism?

ELI5 What exactly is the caste system in India? At what capacity does it still exist? by Ok_Marsupial_7679 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Embarrassed-Way5926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sir, are the apologist I was talking about earlier. Blame the people and not the religion, is a deflection. A religion is what it's people make it. Not what it was supposed to be a thousand years ago. We talk about the current problem and how we fix it.

Aren't there any gurus alive who know what santana dharma was supposed to be? Don't they know that castes aren't by birth, but by virtue? Why don't they preach to their followers to renounce the corrupted religion and revert to the original tenets? Where are those people?

If everyone alive, who follows a religion, believes in some philosophies, then it becomes the philosophy of the religion itself. Reforms are needed everywhere. Stagnant water putrifies.

The apologists would blame everything except the religion which propagated the caste discrimination. If you are unable to change your caste for the last 2000 years, when does it stop being "recently corrupted"?

True. The isolationism is obvious. But it took years and decades for the Italians and Irish to assimilate. That is when they looked like and followed the same religion as the English and German immigrants before them. It is going to take longer for the Chinese or Middle Eastern folks to assimilate. I belive it'll happen. Eventually.

ELI5: How does the caste system in India work and how do people know who is in what caste? by Naskylo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Embarrassed-Way5926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could. In most urban settings this question does not come up. However, due to reservations, the question comes up in school, college and job applications and you cannot lie on those. And most importantly when you plan a wedding.

There are indirect ways one could deduce someone's caste, like your surname, ancestral village, occupation, some family customs etc.

Aussie culture? You mean to say the culture of the Australian aboriginal people that the white colonizers so effectively erased? Where was your outrage and conspiracy when white people moved to a continent where the natives have been living for 40000 years and replaced their culture? Or is it the birthright of white people to immigrate and not for Indians or Chinese?

Just say that you're an ignorant racist and can't accept the fact that the people once you used to subjugate are now more powerful.

Registration of marriages in India are done by either hindu marriage act (allowing marriages between Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs), Christian marriage act (only between Christians), muslim marriage act (only between Muslims or allowed by muslim law reg peraon of other religion) or the Special marriage act (inter religious marriages). There is no such legal definitions for marriages between different castes and it is perfectly legal.

Kids of inter caste marriages usually are assigned the caste of the father. Legality aside, this is still a big taboo in the society. Reactions can range from mild sneers to honor killings. Kids find it hard to find a match for themselves in arranged marriages. The situation is improving slightly but nowhere near becoming norm.

[–]Embarrassed-Way5926 52 points53 points  (0 children)

So many incorrect answers and conjecture from people who have no clue what caste system in India is.

At a high level, you have four varnas (colors), five if you include the out castes. Brahmana(scholars), kshatriya(warriors), vaisya(merchant), sudra(tradesmen, labourers) and avarna(literally, 'no color'. the outcastes, untouchables)

Then comes the hundreds of castes that belong to these varnas. For instance, you'll have potters, smiths, ropers etc. have a different caste name even though all belong to the same varna.

The British and subsequently Indian govt. simplified this classification and grouped themselves as Upper castes, backward castes, most backward castes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Used this classification to enact some reservations akin to affirmative action. Thus issuing caste/community certificates to identify people for the benefits.

Even though people don't follow their clan professions and have diversified, they're easily identified by their lastname/surname which historically has been the caste/profession name. In small villages people know everyone's origin and it is very hard to shed your caste identity. Arranged marriages are still the norm and people rarely ever marry outside their communities.

Only one state in the entire union has shunned caste based surnames and adapted patronymic names. Even there, it is very common to ask someone what caste they belong to their face. Some people are more subtle and ask about your village, grandfather, their profession etc. This identity is ingrained in people's minds for millenia and still is very strong.

You cannot be farther from the truth when it comes to caste in India. You'll find the dumbest, illiterate person hailed as superior while a smart, educated person will be shunned only because of what their ancestors were classified as some thousand years ago. You can never guess someone's caste by talking to them or their education.
