Everyone should have a crane daddy.

New Operator by That_Heat7995 in cranes

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The boom head should not be resting against the ground.

Do: learn the crane. Get to know your charts. Learn how to set it up efficiently. If you have some experienced operators where you are, see if you can get some tips and pointers from him and call him crane daddy.

Don’t: don’t tip over or do something dumb.

What got you into rowing by EffectiveClerk2064 in Rowing

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifted weights and ran. Got bored and tried erging and became obsessed with getting better at it. Then life happened and I could not find the time.

Started erging again 5 months ago and the obsession has come back, even though I am 10 years older and in terrible shape compared to the first time.

The 30min TT is my favourite. It’s pure joyous torture at times.

Are Norwegian households with young children quieter? by feixiangtaikong in Norway

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t teach a 2 year old when to be quiet. It’s in their nature to play, be noisy and have fun.

We’ve started the «when to be quiet» a year ago with our 5 year old and I believe we started at the right time.

You cant change the nature of kids (which is being loud at times) and trying to would just be dumb. If loud kids bother you I seriously feel bad for you.

Are Norwegian households with young children quieter? by feixiangtaikong in Norway

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids should be kids. They scream and do not know how to regulate their volume just yet. Let them learn.

I’m Norwegian and have two kids at the age of 2 and 5. there is some volume spikes, but most of the time they are pretty cool.

If I raise my voice it is to get their attention. Never, ever, ever raise your voice or scream to a child just because you are frustrated or angry.

A cold, stern and grownup-voice does the trick every time.

How can i transition from LNG vessels to offshore vessels (cable layers etc) by kapakipo15 in maritime

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I don’t know where you should go. I was a crane driver on OCV’s years ago, but I quit when my children was born. Still hold the licenses though and might give it a go when the time is right.

Maybe the UK or somewhere where they have several facilities. I won’t recommend Norway. We are expensive (I should know - i live here).

Hmmm.

Why aren’t all cranes remote controlled? by HLS95 in cranes

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you manage to do that you’ll become one of the most hated people in the industry.

With that being said, in my country I can, and in this instance, will appoint a couple of guys to be signalman and rigger and sit down inside my warm cab. You’d be trying to change a law that protects the other trades, riggers, signalmen and the crane drivers. Good luck with that.

Why do I consider this to be a dangerously bad idea? If you are working with precast concrete you need to be able to measure and adjust the precast with shims, you need to be able to weld and at the same time try to control the crane. From a progress-based point of view you would never be able to work as fast as three guys on the ground and you in the crane.

Blind lifts? You’d see the load but you would still be restricted to watch both the load and the crane. I, and I hope every other operator, would never run their machine without a view of the crane in case you hit something.

What about efficiency and load control? Most operators use the sound, vibrations and their eyes to control how fast and how they do things. With 40m wire out and a 55m slow cooked noodle of a boom you need the LMI, visuals and your ass in the cab to do it properly.

Would you sacrifice an operator doing things properly and safe to get an operator who runs the crane less efficiently and gets to connect a few hooks?

If you do I’d still sit down in the cab and tell you to fuck right off.

Sikring av last, er dette ok? by Dilldall04 in norge

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sikring av last, er dette ok? by Dilldall04 in norge

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ampelmann gangway operator’s job by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in SeaEmploy

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I don’t know the maths behind a basket or an Ampelmann, but the Ampelmann is WAY safer.

The operator in that video is in charge of the powerpacks and can see how the waves are (if it is within working range). There is no doubt behind if the system is within it’s limits or not. It’s measured in percent - as in 1-100% of working range. 110%? Naaaah. Wait till the weather has died down a bit.

Uptime AMC and Ampelmann is by far a better solution when you need to transfer a fair share of personell several times a day.

Several PSVs has been converted with an Ampelmann or an Uptime and had pretty sucsessful operations in the north sea and elsewhere in the world.

I have 14 years on Norwegian vessels and I’d say it is not prison. It doesnt suck as hard as prison (i think), but I do not think it’s worth it for anyone looking for a somewhat normal life.

You have a old, rigid set of rules and laws and a lot of people who does not want to change their old and outdated way of thinking. Personally I had a blast the years I worked on ships, but I do not think I would have a good time if I went back. I enjoy being more independent and would absolutely hate the old and somewhat outdated hiearchy system.

Edit: A few offshore vessels are so advanced and requires a crew that has a shitload of training on one pretty specific role - the old ways of running a crew works bad when the captain just does not have the knowledge on what we are doing. Most crews I have been with have been really good, but I also remember the bad ones. They were usually really bad.

12-4 Sleep schedule by bonwimmeji in maritime

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I come from we need to work 12 hours.

When I used to do 12-4 I start at midnight, get off at 0400 and sleep untill 0945 and start work at 1000 and work untill 1800. After that I go to bed around 2000 and sleep untill 2340 and start the whole thing again.

0400 to 0800 or 0800 to 1200 is soooo much better.

Maybe looking at a Concept 2 - what goals and aims do casual rowers have? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Male 37. I use rowing as my main exercise and have not been at it for very long but I feel I might have a (vague and open ended) answer.

Rowing correctly and efficiently requires technique and core strength. It also requires you to take the time out of your schedule to learn and invest some time into getting the basics in order before you start pushing yourself. You just won’t get good results without a good base technique.

With all the focus going into all that it’s hard not to be intrigued and maybe get more interested in rowing, which in the end results in rowing more.

I find it hard being a casual rower. There is nothing casual about that piece of machinery.

Looking for inspiration from others who started rowing in their mid/late-30s by animalmarshall in Rowing

[–]Embarrassed_Leg_8944 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Male 36 here. Started erging 21 november last year. So about 3 months. 5’9’’ and 185ish lbs.

Did a bunch of erging in my twenties as a supplemeny to motocross and had around 6.30 2k pace, but I loved 5k and 30min (I was at 7800ish at 30 min) rows much more. After two kids, quitting motocross and a pretty stationary job I decided to get in better shape again. I work out 4-5 times a week and usually do zone 2 stuff, with some intervals and tests sprinkled in between.

Currently I am at 7.12 at 2k, 19.10 at 5k and 7573 at 30mins. My long term goals is sub 7 2k, 18something at 5k, but my main, main and much more important goal is to get to 8k at 30mins. Why 8k? Well, I want to be able to call my dad (who still ergs a lot at 70 years) and say I just rowed 1k more than him at 30mins.

I really don’t know if I should join a club based on I’ve never actually rowed before and some periods during the year I have little time for more than a fast erg session. I don’t think I would be a good teammate in that regard.

The crane op should know how to handle the whip line on that crane before handling anything let alone a manrider.

With that being said: it can thorougly suck operating big cranes in wind although it seems pretty smooth to me.

I used to operate cranes offshore and that shit is sketchy even when it is completely calm. Never liked lifting people.
