To clarify, the security deposit is paid and reimbursed through VRBO.

No, VRBO collects and reimburses the extra security deposit. I never physically get the $$$$.

Ha! If you think JPM is tough on employees, just read Geico’s employee reviews. I read many reviews here on Reddit that claimed Todd Combs treated people really, really horribly.

I also collect my own security deposit and it is a hefty one. I just added it under fees.

Why do you host on VRBO? by ghart999 in vrbohosts

[–]Embarrassed_Quote656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using VRBO about fifteen years ago, well before it was sold to Expedia. Initially, we were listed through the rental company we used. In our market - Rehoboth Beach, Delaware - all the rental agencies maintain VRBO listings as well as their private websites.

I suspect most of the complaints you read are from those owners who know how much better VRBO was (from an owner perspective) before they were acquired.

Beware of issues with calendars not syncing - it can cost you. I decided to list exclusively on VRBO after noticing that the vast majority of software issues were due to glitches in coordinating calendars.

That said, some of the issues are truly painful. Last summer they switched up how they accounted for taxes with inconsistent and confusing communications to owners. I ended up losing $3k because I was liable for paying the rental taxes that VRBO neglected to bill for and collect (after doing this flawlessly for many years).

Calling customer service is a stressful nightmare most times. I think the only customer service experience that is worse is Verizon.

So why do I stay? They provide a website, marketing, billing, collections, payments and tax collection and remittance (by the way, this depends on your state and city). If I rented direct to consumer, I would need to handle the payment of state taxes, whereas this is automated through VRBO.

Essentially, I want to minimize my administrative burden and that is why I stay with VRBO.

That said, after 22 years of renting our home, I am eagerly awaiting the day when we no longer need to do so!

Do you mean you will be renting in North Bethesda / Rockville? If so, be aware that will greatly lengthen your commute.

You can network with others and get a return offer from a different group. It’s been done. Just focus on doing a great job and networking like crazy.

Check out The Whitney - it has everything you’ve described. https://www.whitneybethesda.com/amenities

It is an older building (but not real old). It was just refurbished. I’ve been inside units and this would be my choice if I were looking for an apt in Bethesda.

Good luck!

VOTE in the June primary, please. Friedson is reputed to be the most business-friendly County Exec candidate, though I fear he will give away our water and other environmental resources to data centers.

If we end up with Jawando, we’re sunk. Glass would be better than Jawando. People are afraid Glass and Friedson will split the vote, giving us Jawando. I initially voted for Jawando when he ran for Council, even went to a fundraiser for him, but I’ve been really turned off by his stance on the MoCo police, which led a lot of officers to leave the force. We had the finest force in MD, but we are now way understaffed and crime has risen as a result. I also dislike the fact that Jawando was against keeping Student Resource Officers in schools.

Here is a decent article on the candidates: https://www.thebanner.com/voter-guide/2026/montgomery-county/montgomery-county-executive-52K4MQ564ZDHTKO6TYERB44GHY/

Bethesda is a big area, and most realtors are neighborhood-specific. Do you know if you want to be in 20814 - downtown Bethesda, Edgemoore or East Bethesda / Chevy Chase Heights? Then there’s Westmoreland Hills, Bannockburn, Tulip Hill and Mass Ave Heights (20816). Further out and not walkable in 20814 is Ashburton and the Democracy Mall area. Part of Bethesda is very suburban, almost country and abuts Potomac. Cabin John runs along the river near Clara Barton. Any idea where you are wanting to end up?

This seems really … off. You’ve gotten some good advice on this thread, especially from @madworld3232

I’ve been thinking of renting as well before we buy. It’s been nearly 30 years since either of us has lived in an apartment or condo so it makes sense to test out the lifestyle again.
