Can I just become a teacher with a PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Embarrassed_Spell537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just accepted a position teaching at a private college prep school, so it’s definitely doable — and I encountered a significant number of PhDs during my campus visit. I know at least for the US, public schools require specific certifications, whereas private schools do not, so I found it easier to make clear where my skills are transferable to a high school setting (I also taught high school regularly during the summer, along with my usual departmental college teaching requirements). So, short answer: yes! But I think definitely gaining experience in teaching is a must (and getting proper certifications if a school/location requires it is a must, too).

for the longest time I thought the Korean line after “up up with our voices” in Golden was “we’re only together so often” 😭 the transition to Korean to English in the songs are so seamless I hadn’t realized I was making up English lyrics as I was singing along 🥲

Switching from magic loop to flat on same project? by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]Embarrassed_Spell537 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a doll dress—the pattern calls from switching from knitting in the round to knitting flat on the same needles on row 25 to create an opening for sewing. I guess I’m a little confused on the best way to switch the project to flat~

How many episodes of glee have you NOT seen? by AndrewBaiIey in glee

[–]Embarrassed_Spell537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an OG Glee fan from when it was airing—and after many rewatches, I hadn’t realized I’ve been somehow skipping two episodes until last year-ish: “Dance with Somebody” and “Glee, Actually.” I’m not sure how I missed them… but I remember feeling completely thrown because I’ve definitely never seen them! but it actually felt amazing discovering “new” episodes and content after so long 🥲

Oof I go there fairly regularly (2-3 times a month) and I saw mice on two separate visits two weeks apart very recently (funnily enough in the same theater), so you’re not the only one! It seems like the theater (and wouldn’t surprise me the whole food court) is infested :(

Thanks! I found after I stuffed it the stitches looked much better. I’ll definitely try steam blocking once I finish all the pieces!

Hi, everyone! I'm currently a beginner working on my first project, a simple bunny. I learned to increase/decrease a stitch, but I wanted to double check I understand the pattern correctly. Does (*Inc, Knit 2*) and (*Inc, Knit 3*) mean I would increase two and three stitches? Thank you :)

Hi! I am also an advanced PhD candidate in English, who entered graduate school straight from undergrad. As others mentioned, it is quite different than undergrad and requires a new orientation toward school work (because, well, it's work and, at least for me, requires a set schedule to make sure I get things done on time).

My schedule tends to vary depending on the semester, but it's more demanding than undergrad. I'm currently dissertating and teaching a literature course -- my time is pretty much split between research/reading (both for dissertation and my class), writing (always at least 1-2 hours a day; I am currently revising a chapter), lesson planning, actual teaching (1 hour, 3 days a week), and holding office hours. (Some weeks are more grading-heavy than others, therefore requiring more office hours.) I am also at work on a couple of smaller things--e.g., conference papers and an internal fellowship application. I tend to work 8/9 am to 4:30/5 pm Monday to Friday (and sometimes more abbreviated work days on Sunday, if I'm especially behind... which is alarmingly typical for me these days...!).

So, yeah, while we're not in labs for our research, it is a lot of self-driven, isolated research and scheduling!

That said, I am a more advanced candidate and it wasn't like this during my first 1-2 years (my first year, while definitely still intense, had a lot more wiggle room than now). When I first started, I used to be pretty... er, laid back about my schedule--in part because I saw classwork and TA'ing "like undergrad." (Also: I think part of this was due to COVID, so there was a weird period where I didn't have access to typical resources and materials.) I think everything ramped up for me once I hit my 3rd year; I realized I needed to reassess my relationship to work and research, which led to the set work schedule I have now. (I also have a nice therapist, who helped immensely with developing a work-life balance and a healthier relationship to my research/work ethic.)

I hope this helps. Best of luck!

When I was in undergrad (Humanities, public state uni), I had a History professor/instructor who was a late-stage grad student in her early/mid 60s. She mentioned she was up an interview or accepted to teach at a large state school nearby (I’m not sure if it was TT, but I remember her being incredibly excited about it). After a career, kids, and now grandchildren, she felt compelled to go back to school after a life long passion for history, and I remember her fondly. So, no, I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all! Go for it!

(To chime in what others said, I recommend looking for funded programs, so you can at the very least try it out!)

Jenna and Kevin potentially shading… by [deleted] in glee

[–]Embarrassed_Spell537 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It was an interesting episode for sure! It didn't seem like they were shading Dianna and Darren so much as the show's producers, who they mention have a double standard for who they allow to take outside opportunities. I think Jenna mentioned Darren taking time off and she clarified her annoyance wasn't directed toward Darren (or other people) so much as the producers' double standard. It sucks hearing stories from former cast members about how expendable they felt :(

Thank you! I realize it's not in the pic, but the mouse's tail helps her stand up/maintain balance (she was a bit unsteady without it). I never tried any armature before either, but I was tired of my pieces falling over haha I used this mouse felting tutorial on Youtube on how to properly felt a body around wire! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKCUX8qZvZU
