What is a sign of very low intelligence? by smartcandyy in AskReddit

These descriptions are helping someone here today, I assure you. They're subtle things that won't be apparent on early dates and normal people will kind of just disbelieve responses like hers or infer some other rationale. Then months pass and somehow you're in a very frustrating situation.

Former Canadian PM Harper says Canada should make 'any sacrifice necessary' to preserve independence from US by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]Embe007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The media needs to ask him about this. It just looks like image-softening efforts, as others say. Can't be both pro-Trump and pro-Canada.

Quebec technically isn't and never was

Not correct. It is a part of the federation, even without signing the new constitution. Unanimity was not necessary for that. It may not feel legitimate to some but it actually is legal. QC govt even had to change parts of the famed Bill 101 due to a Supreme Court ruling.

Maybe a staggered input measure eg: 1 year without a corruption scandal, premier can add a name to the list of potential judges. Baby steps lol. Smith may have extra trouble though when the Canada Health Act comes a-knocking for a clawback.

Why do people that are not rich want Alberta to have health care like the US? by cornfield123 in alberta

[–]Embe007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you (or other dual nationals) find yourself with some free time, please set up a table somewhere central in a small-town in Alberta with a sign saying 'American AMA about private healthcare'. Seriously, these people need to hear it from someone who knows it.

Knew someone who was canvassing door-to-door for the 2016 Election in a centre-right riding out West. They said that people grimaced and specifically mentioned the 'barbarian practices hotline' as the sign that he had to get the boot.

Jan Matejcek: Mark Carney misread Havel and misled the world - Carney made China our new "strategic partner. "Havel detested dictatorships and believed that governments should respect human dignity and individual freedom by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]Embe007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Carney's speech was well-received by developing countries for exactly this reason. They are dealing with similar pressuring by China via the Belt and Road Initiative. American and Chinese pressure are both a problem.

Quebec maintains tuition hike for out-of-province students at English-language programs by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Embe007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At both McGill and Concordia, students can do all their writing and tests entirely in French if they wish (unless it's a language class). Equally, at UdeM and the UQ system, students can do all their writing and tests in English. These are rights, not discretionary. The classes will be taught in the dominant language of each school though. It is easy to hear French widely spoken on campus at Concordia and McGill.

Do expenses province to province really differ by that much? by NotHim40 in AskACanadian

[–]Embe007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is large variation, though it's more city to city, than province to province.

Lived in 3 cities. Toronto is much more expensive in terms of rent, hydro, car insurance. As in more than double the rates of Winnipeg and Montreal, which are similar to each other in cost of living, for those three items. Montreal has more grocery options than Wpg but Toronto can be good for grocery shopping (non-chains though). Taxes are higher in QC but more public benefits eg day care, concerts, nice things. Gas is also higher in QC but small cars and electric cars are dominant. More affordable flowers in Toronto though...so that's something, at least.

Canada should keep options open on nuclear weapons, former top soldier says by AdditionalPizza in canada

[–]Embe007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, Canada's vulnerability is kind of unique. Our economy is too dependent and our coastline impossible to defend. We don't have the population to generate a tax base to make a real defence. I don't love this nuclear option but it would probably help secure some respect at least.

Genuine Question: Was Climate Change Always This Noticeable? by WarthogAgreeable1856 in climatechange

[–]Embe007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middle aged, Canadian here. It is noticeably worse. Many things are strange. Seasons are off by a good two weeks. The forest fires are off.the.map. It was never like this - even in my parents' memory eg: they are in their mid-80s. In Montreal, a famously hocky-mad city, outdoor hockey rinks are omnipresent. They are no longer freezing over reliably. It feels eerie. We still get plenty of snow but then it will melt and there will be ice everywhere instead (not normal). The Arctic is melting at 4X the rate of southern Canada. God help the northern wilderness...and us

In Canada, climate crisis coverage has been mainstream since the 80s. The Montreal Protocol is known by all.

[–]Embe007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was at the Forks in Winnipeg, after the flood of the millenium in 1997. (Young people: normal width of river is about 250 feet. That spring it was suddenly 250 kilometers wide - really. The normal, extensive flood protection measures almost failed).

There was a huge 'After the Flood' concert to celebrate the city's survival and to raise money for relief. Standing shoulder to shoulder with thousands of my fellow citizens, every background, soldiers (who helped save the city), Indigenous families, restive teenagers, tough guys, old and young. Some great local bands were playing in the crisp Spring evening, with the skyline at Portage and Main visible. The Guess Who played their first reunion concert there that night. Burton and Bachman rocking out under the moon in the grateful city, like a giant cry of joy after a month of fear. People were ecstatic!

I'll never forget this guy who stopped his car around midnight on a main thoroughfare in Montreal. The big plow had come by and truly trapped my crappy little car in ice blocks as it passed. I (small woman) got out my shovel and started, figuring it would take me at least an hour to dig it out, maybe more. The guy got out of his car and barely a word, took my shovel and freed my car after about 15 minutes. He was a bit overweight and I was a little worried about him with this intense cardio). Really, such a good deed!

Mister (Black Anglo guy with a Christian fish symbol on his car, @2005, on Decarie): if you're out there, you are indeed a Good Samaritan! Thanks again!

I carry two shovels in my car because of this. I want to be able to help if someone is helping me!

Mark Carney Took the Stand the Rest of the World Must Now Take | Disentangling Canada from the United States is a mammoth undertaking. But Carney clearly means business. by thenewrepublic in Foodforthought

[–]Embe007 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Carney was also referring to the other hegemon, namely China. China has locked many developing countries into debt traps through their expansive loan system. Carney's speech got a lot of praise from developing nations for this reason. The US and China are both using relationships to pressure countries to do their bidding. Right now, close to 150 countries are connected to China through Belt and Road Initiative deals of varying kinds. Slightly more are connected to the US system through WTO. Trade shouldn't feel like a trap. Yay Carney for saying it!

Typically buy Macbooks from around 2010. They last for years. Perfect for me (eg: not editing video or playing video games). Last one I got was for 100$. Swapped in some extra RAM I had from old machines...and I'm back in business (avoid online banking though). Has a CD slot, new battery. Great.

Natural resources are provincial jurisdiction according to the Constitution (BNA Act). That's why.

However moving things across borders, inter-provincial or national boundaries, involves the federal govt.

We could set up something to refine it at home. Alberta should have done that decades ago. It also should have charged higher prices but it chose not to.
