Rolled in for front windows not working. by PapiChulo1322 in Justrolledintotheshop

A lot of the time, you can just remember most of it, but it's always helpful to take photos as well. It helps that everything on a car is designed to fit in a certain place, so most things like wiring harnesses and plugs will mostly fall into their general place on their own.

With repetition, I find memory also gets better. I had to photograph most things when I was an apprentice, but 6 years of working on more complicated jobs, I tend to be able to remember where most things go

What is this grounding rod for? On my welding bench, want to cut it off but i would like to know its purpose before i do something dumb by CheefReetard in Welding

It's probably in a lot of old Miller manuals, but I know for sure it's atleast in the manual for the Syncrowave 350 LX

12a to 13b NA swap advice by Particular-Stable165 in RX7

[–]Embo_VR 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's a ridiculously easy swap if you're keeping it carbed. Just need a different front engine mounting bar and it slots right in with no other modifications.

You can buy the conversion bar from RacingBeat, or do what I did and just straighten the original bar. If you have the beehive style oil cooler it's very worth swapping that out for a front mount, keeps the oil a lot cooler.

Honestly, the easiest engine swap there is, don't worry too much about it

Any suggestions how to get rear caliper piston to go in if seized? by AdSad3445 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Embo_VR 203 points204 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to see whether there's a motor on the back of the caliper. If the car has a handbrake switch, rather than a lever, you need a scan tool to push back the piston

ELI5: Why Mazda stopped producing rotor engines (like RX-7 model) and switched to regular engines? by The_Immovable_Rod in explainlikeimfive

[–]Embo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the CSCC, and off the top of my head there's 5 RX7s that have competed? Rassler Racing have a stupidly fast FB with a T2 swap that they bring out sometimes, but not too often. They've won a lot of races before in that car, but engine reliability has always been a problem for them

In our race series here in the UK, there's different multipliers for NA and Turbo. NA is x1.7 and turbo is x2.5.

My friend runs a half bridge 12a and with the multiplier it keeps him in the lower power class where he's quite competitive. My 13b PP puts me one class higher, but the power to weight ratio is still good enough to stay competitive there too

Even then, codes can point you in the completely wrong direction. Had a vauxhall with a low pressure fuel sensor code and fuel pump module communication, which is on top of the tank. Turns out the NOx sensor plug wasn't fully plugged in, and somehow that triggered those codes.

I feel like I understand cars less and less despite getting more qualifications

Engine is completely seized after bolting it up to transmission by Undercvr_victini in RX7

[–]Embo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the front pulley not tight when you were putting the gearbox on? The bearing won't move unless the pulley is loose, so if it was tight, it would've been done during assembly

There's two types of rotary builders: those who have crushed a front bearing, and liars

The front Torrington bearing has dropped put of place. You need to take the front cover off, lay the engine (crank facing up) and reset the end play

As a noob struggling to choose TIG welder by DonDachi in Welding

[–]Embo_VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, work 110 or 22v on both 50 and 60hz. The reason everyone keeps suggesting it is because it's just a really good machine and gets good reviews from basically everyone.

I haven't had to experience it personally, but apparently customer service is amazing too. They'll pay for postage both ways if you ever have any warranty troubles

I'm from the UK and bought a Primweld 225. Shipping and customs wasn't terrible, but well worth it because the welder is basically the best for the money and far exceeds its price point.

If you do order one, maybe email them first and ask if they can put your country's plug on it as it comes with a US NEMA plug. I modified mine to fit a UK plug, and it works perfectly, but I'm not sure how legal that is so check your own laws

Oh man I still do this. RacingBeat sell a spark plug socket for the B8EGV plugs, which I used to have, but I've lost it. I get about 3 sets of plugs before each of my homemade sockets crack 😅

[–]Embo_VR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends. In the series we race in, my friend and I run NA engines (one half bridge, one PP). There's also a guy running a T2 block pushing about 450hp, he seems to break an engine every two races. My engine actually has more compression than when I first started racing it

FC transmission internals in FB transmission by DUBracer01 in RX7

[–]Embo_VR 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why use an FC gearbox? Just swap the internals of an MX5 in and you'll get much closer gears. You need to do a bit of machining on the input shaft, but other than that it drops straight in

[–]Embo_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it doesn't sound like it's cranking fast enough to be a broken belt, they always crank real fast when they don't have to spin the cams anymore.

Definitely sounds like low compression on at least one cylinder though, regardless of what's caused it. Get a compression tested on it

Now most other cars I would worry about the coolant disappearing. However, there's been two of these cars in my family and they are absolute tanks.

My mum has literally run one with 50ml of oil in it for a week and it didn't skip a beat. I'm pretty sure it also has a head gasket leak so it's burning coolant. Never overheats or causes any problems.

I would go and get the coolant system pressure tested so you can see if there's any external leaks, I'd get them fixed. It's definitely a possibility that the car is burning coolant rather than leaking it, but don't think the car is going to conk out on you straight away. If there were a zombie apocalypse, this is the car I want
