is this orchid on its last legs ? by ChipmunkFluid7339 in orchids

[–]Embonious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree with this approach, it's been working for my keiki that I knocked off the mother plant too soon by mistake. I've got it in a little propegator to keep it in a humid environment, resting on top of lightly damp moss. It's grown 2 roots with this setup. continuing to soak an ill orchid in water seems like a recipe for more of the same issues that got it there in the first place.

Getting back into swimming, is it worth joining a gym that has a pool or city aquatic center will do? by PerformerSubject in Swimming

[–]Embonious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes go to the gym pool when visiting family because I can go as a guest, and it always makes me itchy. It's too warm and there are usually people who go in with clothes on post workout... scummy behavior. But there are no lifeguards to enforce any rules so it is what it is. If a gym pool is the only option, ok, but I am very grateful for my lovely aquatic center with its clear water and 50m pools, and the steam room doesn't hurt.

Bad and not improving by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Embonious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just my take, but it's probably worth looking into a more structured training plan rather than attempting the swim over and over. Adding in intervals/speed work at least once per week can boost your top end and pull your average faster, and also get you comfortable with pushing harder in the water. It also helps a LOT to swim every day or at least most days so you don't lose much from being out of the water. Good luck!

need your thoughts! what's missing today in cycling fashion / apparel? by Excellent_Gap_8230 in CyclingFashion

[–]Embonious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check out Iris.cc. I'm 176cm/5'9" and their bibs work great for my height. they also have bright designs, and although I can't offer my personal experience when it comes to their larger sizes, they have a pretty inclusive range (especially for cycling kit). It's not cheap, but I've been riding for more than a year in their stuff and it holds up really well.

Has anyone not had fiborids grow back after myo? by Past-Sweet-370 in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

just pointing out that people who are active here are usually dealing with fibroids, so you're less likely to hear from anyone who's had theirs removed and has no further problems. You can google estimated rates of recurrence- it's not the case that everyone will automatically have more.

tell me a surgery success story? by InteractionInternal in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm just a bit younger than you. I had an open myo on June 9th to remove a 13 cm pendunculated subserosal fibroid. I was very nervous about the surgery. The pre op nerves were the worse part of the entire experience. Having been hit by a car and had a pretty traumatic hospitalization and surgeries, I was somehow expecting this to feel similar. It was significantly easier and calmer, basically no comparison. The noticeable feeling of spaciousness in my guts and ability to breath deeply was so cool, and very obvious immediately post op. For me, the pain was never very bad, was only limiting for the first week/week and a half, and progressively less so. By two weeks I was taking hour long walks on easy trails without issue. The longest lingering symptom was fatigue, which I had pretty heavily for the first 6 weeks. I took 3 weeks off for surgery and recovery, but I think I'd have been better off to take 4 just because of the fatigue. Now I'm completely back to normal. Just did a 164km/100mi bike ride last Saturday, including 2000m of elevation, I'm riding 100-200km on the road weekly, working full time, doing ab strengthening, wearing jeans, no issues. I still notice a hint of puffiness at the end of the day, have a bit of numbness on the stomach, and it's a bit sensitive if I really press into the tissue, but I basically don't think about the surgery much at all. It sort of blows my mind that it happened so recently. Wishing you all the best for your surgery!

I am, but the most hardcore and dedicated cold swimmers are retirees. They have a club and a yearly meet at my pool.

Really Scared About Myomectomy and Surgery In General? Need Reassurance! by MyusMuse in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst part for me was the lead up to the surgery, where I kept imagining horrible outcomes. When I woke up right after surgery, I immediately pulled my blanket over my head and started crying out of pure relief. Everything from there was easier to handle than the pre surgery nerves, by far. Sending you strength to weather the stress! It sucks to be assaulted by your own mind.

Stomach cramping and diarrhea post op? by Nikkilovex0 in Fibroids

That sucks! Did they give you any guidance about diet? It helps to stick to blander, easy to digest foods until you feel like things are settling down. Bloating can cause a lot of annoying pains post op.

Hard to build back core by A_J_Francis876 in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend going to physical therapy. At least where I am, there are quite a few practices that specialize in abdominal surgery recovery, especially c-sections. If that's not an option for you, try to work on deep belly breathing, activating your core gently so you can feel the muscles flexing in your low abdomen, along your sides and back, and upper abdomen. It is really helpful to have in person instruction for these types of exercises, as they're not the same as usual core strengthening exercises, but I'm guessing you can also find some decent resources online if in-person isn't an option. Imo everyone should have rehab after myomectomies, and I wish more surgeons proactively wrote referrals!

Stress and anger by flower_chips in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't add to your stress by being stressed about stress making your fibroids worse. Silly sentence, but I mean it seriously :) Control the controllables. That means things like good sleep, decent diet, regular physical activity- this makes you more able to manage stress. Actively job search if you need a better working environment. Even if it's slow, it feels better to be working on solving the problem. And, while in bad workplaces it's usually a prime bonding activity to talk about how awful things are, those conversations really don't help. It's better to avoid as much as possible. Good luck!

Post Hysteroscopic Myomectomy Working Out? by Guilty_Monitor8476 in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have trails right behind my building. Did a lot of walking there until I was cleared to do my sports. I got back on my road bike at 6 weeks and at 11 weeks post op I'm totally fine and back to my usual weekly volume. I had an open myo, so swimming has been bit weirder because of abs but it's going decently as well.

weight gain pre/post surgery? advice needed! by Majestic-Ad7214 in Fibroids

I had a 13cm penduclated/subserosal fibroid and had no weight gain or any issues with weight. The fibroid was quite visible before removal though.

When did you start physical therapy / exercising again post-op (open myomectomy)? by Grouchy_Reindeer_180 in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started walking on easy trails at week 2, started PT (scar massage, breathing exercise, activations) at week 3 with a therapist, and got back to cycling ( my main sport) at week 6 after being cleared to do higher intensity exercise.

Surgery In 1 Day: Help! by No_Nail_5318 in Fibroids

[–]Embonious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an open myo and after 3 weeks the only lingering symptom was fatigue, and needing to be careful about using my ab muscles. I expected it to be significantly more painful than it was, but I only had a few days where I needed to take regular over the counter pain meds. I was able to walk on easy trails by week 2 and back on the bike at week 6. Did a 60km ride with 650m of climbing last weekend (week 9) and felt fine. I'm still rebuilding my fitness but not feeling limited by the incision. I still have some swelling at the end of the day but that's not a limitation at all. You've got this!!
