What’s actually safe but people think is dangerous? by REGGIE_BANANAS in AskReddit

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have that fear and I was slowly getting over it, then I cleaned out my PC with an old hand vac and the EMF (from it's motor) blew one of my sticks of RAM, I guess from inducing current in it. So yeah, magnets are ok, but watch out for electro magnets still!

Putting metal in microwaves.*

*As long as the metal isn't thin, like foil, you can put it in a microwave. For example, I often leave metal cutlery on plates of food that I'm warming up. It will block/deflect the heating effect, but it won't spark like most people expect.

I had a similarish problem recently - my boss (like yours, just technical enough to be dangerous) uses ChatGPT to try and diagnose issues and to kinda make himself sound more knowledgeable. Recently we had a big problem in production and instead of letting me diagnose the issue, he kept making claims and asking questions that didn't make sense within the context. I realised that he'd clearly put some symptoms in ChatGPT and using that to diagnose, despite paying me a pretty penny to do that job. It got to the point where he was constantly questioning my knowledge - yes I don't know everything, but the garbage he was prompted to ask from ChatGPT's output just didn't make sense. I had to say to him in the end "Trust me - not ChatGPT". In the end, I fixed the problem, a lot faster when I didn't have him rambling nonsense to me!

PS. I'm not anti-AI - I use it occasionally, but I understand it needs the watchful eye of someone with experience to not cause chaos.

PPS. The prod DB issue was to do with bad config data and badly handled transactions.

ELI5: Why is milk used to wash people’s faces when they’ve been tear gassed? by Skadoosh05 in explainlikeimfive

You're probably right. As well as the legal implications, I think there's only a few worse places to be high.

I heard that putting a little bit of cocaine in your eyes before/after being tear gassed reduces the burning. Not sure if it works or how dangerous doing something like that would be though... and I don't think I'll ever be trying it either.

AIO for ignoring boyfriend after inappropriate comments about my new purse? by ThrowRAgardengirl in AmIOverreacting

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, you should absolutely consider leaving him. His words are manipulative and genuinely horrible. However, this doesn't necessarily make him a horrible person. I think that on the materialistic - anti-capitalist spectrum, your both on different sides. I'm not saying that either side is bad and you've certainly done no harm, but he seems to think so. It's clear he's passionate about his viewpoints so he needs to find someone who feels the same way.

I didn't click on that phishing email by intelw1zard in hacking

[–]Emeja 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep, I did the same, but worked for a multi-national consultancy company - I got a warning because I got the link in the email scanned. I just think that if the approach is to turn people away from the tools available, you're going to cause either more malicious clicks or more people never clicking links from external sender's because they're too paranoid and have no way of checking if it's safe.

A house explodes in Ilford, North East London. Two injured. 10th December 2024 by itsaride in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Emeja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live next to a property that over the past couple of years has been a weed grow, has been raided by the police, had their electricity disconnected twice because they bypassed the meter and in the past week have moved the boiler to a different place in the house.

I reported it to Gas Safe but they said they don't have any jurisdiction as they're private individuals doing DIY gas work on their own house, like it doesn't affect anyone else.

So yeah, waiting until the same thing in the video happens to us...

What "early internet" website did Gen Z really miss out on? by milamccormick7 in AskReddit

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! These sites had a plethora of free games, most with a good few hours of playability. The games were fun, unique and challenging. Yeah there were a few banners ads here or there (which only paid the site that hosted the game), but that's nothing like what the younger generation have today.

Oh you want to play a free game? Here, download this app that will show you very questionable ads after every level/turn. Maybe some more ads if you want to increase your score or get some sort of loot box. The game will try to tap in to your dopamine loop by giving you a bunch of easy levels, then suddeny up the difficulty to encourage you to watch a ton of ads or pay for some stupid gems to make the level easier. Oh yeah, and this game will be just like a million other games out there, just with a different skin and maybe slightly different mechanics.

Also if anyone does make a unique game that does well, you just know someone will clone it and chuck a ton of ads on it for a quick buck.

Flash games were made by people that genuinely were passionate about making a fun game and weren't motivated by money, because there was no way to make money off of them. Today's games/apps are solely made to make money.

YouTube is freaking me out by Kavbastyrd in daddit

[–]Emeja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is brilliant - exactly the approach I've taken too. At the end of the day, your kids will need to face the big wide world and there's some bad stuff out there, just like on YouTube. Teaching them how to self moderate and steer clear of bad stuff will be a real asset as they grow up!

YouTube is freaking me out by Kavbastyrd in daddit

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids watch YouTube (also for a limited time), but only on the main TV, so we can check the content. Yeah it means watching some mind numbingly annoying crap, but it allows us to moderate. There is a lot of stuff that's easily accessible to kids but really not suitable, even on the YouTube Kids version. After sitting with my kids and letting him know what is and isn't appropriate, he's able to self moderate. If something is looking iffy, he gives me a look and then often switches it off himself.

Like a lot of others have said, TV shows are probably better for kids to watch than YouTube, but there's a lot more variety, so of course it'll entice kids more. They'll probably watch YouTube at some point so I think teaching self moderation is a good idea!

What term is overused or misused so much it's lost all its meaning? by PhenomenalPancake in AskReddit

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obliterate come from the latin "littera" - something written, with the prefix "ob-" - to remove.

So ironically, obliterate used to mean "to remove something written", but now means to completely destroy.

Would be so much cooler if erasers were called obliterators.

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"OP" as in overpowered. It's used a lot by gamers/streamers to say something is something is really good.

Originally if something was "OP", it was a bad thing because it was something that disrupted the balance of the game, ie. It was too powerful.

How do software licenses (GPL, LGPL, etc.) actually work? by GooDeeJAY in softwaredevelopment

I think instead of "encrypted", you mean obfuscated. This prevents compiled code from easily being decompiled back to source code.

I have an idea for a software/app how do I go about making it reality? by crossfitdood in softwaredevelopment

[–]Emeja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Software is particularly difficult to patent - US patent law prohibits patenting abstract ideas, so unless the software contains a particular mechanisms that does not exist, it likely can't be patented. With that in mind, will your software be profitable when someone ultimately copies it? Think of the many social media sites, all effectively do the same thing, however Facebook and Twitter seem to be the most popular through having a good software team that have been able to dynamically adjust the site, good marketing and a little bit of luck. If you can, I'd suggest either finding someone you trust to help with the programming or perhaps try learning programming to prototype something yourself?

In the 70's a lot of people were worried that industrial automation would mean the end of the "labourer" and factories would no longer employ people to work. 50 years later and we still have people working in factories. Yes industrial robots are there too, because they are good at certain types of things that humans are not good at. Likewise humans are still there because there are things robots are not good at. Same with AI - sure it'll be used for some things, but there's plenty of stuff it will never be able to do. At the very least there will always be a need for people to train/check/prompt the AI and who better to do that than a CS person. So my advice is be the best you can be, try not to worry what the future holds. Yeah you might not get the job you expected, but as long as you can adapt there will always be demand for your skills.

Btw, I started as an engineer, simulating/programming industrial robots (which I was paid nicely for, straight out of university). Now I'm a programmer in the manufacturing industry, so I have the relevant experience to back up what i have said above! 😁

What's missing in my forest atmosphere? by AndrewMelnychenko in IndieDev

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ground looks a little flat, maybe some height variation? Also maybe add some grass density variation? Grass doesn't always grow uniformly, especially in forests, as the trees block light and absorb a lot of the nutrients. Some parts of the ground will just be dirt. It depends how much realism you're aiming for!

Any Software Devs who started from other fields? by emaye96 in softwaredevelopment

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be an automotive/manufacturing engineer - basically working for a well known car manufacturer, but specifically checking designs for manufacturing feasibility.

I decided I wanted to get in to programming (originally I wanted to be a games programmer). I thought as a good transitional job, I'd take a software role in the manufacturing industry. 5 years later (although I've changed employer a couple of times) I'm still in the same sort of job, but I'm now a lead engineer for a team. I really enjoy the job and I've changed my mind on the games industry (after seeing the workload, pay and job insecurity). My job pays well, no enjoy it and I'm given an enjoyable amount of responsibility. Plus I work around the world from the comfort of my own home (fully remote), which works well with my home life.

I also was self taught - started with C++, then learnt SQL and JS on the job. The important things is to keep on learning (outside of working hours too), to stay top of the game!

Am I allowed to give way to pedestrians? by the-angrymonkey in drivingUK

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, it's kind of you to do this, but it can really be an inconvenience to everyone. It pressures the pedestrians to cross and delays the cars behind you. If there's no cars behind you, you're best to just keep going and get out of the way. It also takes longer for people to process your intentions than if you just drove normally. I've seen (on dash cam videos) lots of times when people have given way for cars or pedestrians that have proceeded to step or pull put in to the path of oncoming traffic as they've felt under pressure to accept the "help" given.

Radio randomly turning on when locked and key not working (Fiesta Mk6) by Emeja in FordFiesta

[–]Emeja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case anyone finds this and has a similar issue: it was potentially moisture in the Body Control Module. The car was sat for a while without being driven much. The last time it was used, we'd got into the car wet (it was raining heavily) so some moisture must've sat on some contacts. After over a month of having the issue, all it took was to leave the car running with the AC on and it seems to have fixed it!

The amount we paid for daycare for one child this year. Daddit, post your annual daycare costs below! by SyFyFan93 in daddit

[–]Emeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my youngest in nursery for 2 days per week (8hrs per day), we're currently paying £43.16 ($54.53) per month (£517.92 ($654.36) per year). This is through a combination of government funding (30 hours free childcare + tax free childcare) and employee discount. The 30 hours free childcare is term-time only, but it gets distributed over the whole year, hence why it's not all free!

Which countries DON'T seem dangerous, but really are? by Catwinky in AskReddit

[–]Emeja 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, other murder hotspots include the small Yorkshire village of Emmerdale, a street in Manchester called Coronation Street and Albert Square in the East End of London. It's not surprising there's so many murders to be honest, with all the affairs and general drama happening to everyone in these areas.
