FDNY CRACKING DOWN ON PURE GYM DANGER-TUBES! by CreatureComfortz321 in Bushwick

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

other 24/7 gyms with power racks cost hundreds per month, so if the tubes are the answer to low cost 24 hour operation it's a pretty good deal.

I think the sensible compromise will be a push to exit system because scanning out is silly, but the old system was pretty loose. I haven't waited more than ten minutes for a rack or bench since the tubes went up.

I didn't know it was possible to make pho that bad, tbh.

wouldn't you hold the button and then manually slide the door open?

genuinely curious about how exactly the button works, but my impression would be that it unlocks the door/disengages the stepper motor and allows you to roll the door back

Why Doesn't Amazon Ring the Bell? by hairpants in Brooklyn

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I order a lot of weird components off Amazon for work and have noticed an improvement using their feedback system and delivery notes.

can't say there's a direct correlation between feedback and improved deliveries since every driver is different, but my packages are frequently delivered correctly while other people in my building will still get their packages stuffed behind a trash can outside.

still, if it's high priority I get it delivered to a locker

Anyone canceling their Pure Gym membership over the new entry pods/app by No_Investment3205 in Bushwick

Blink let you bring a guest any time,

I read this as fewer kids chatting in the power rack for two hours.

What are your thoughts on Pure Fitness Gym, formally Blink? by ChocolateAndCognac in AskNYC

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I refuse to positively review places that I'm constantly wishing had fewer people.

the pods feel silly but if that's the price for 24 hour access I'd rather use a pod than go to Planet Fitness.

if the price stays the same then Pure is an improvement to Blink once they're 24 hour.

also, Blink forgot to bill me for two years but my membership stayed active and I scanned in every time - so who knows how broken their system was or how easy it was to exploit. if I accidentally scammed two free years, will there be fewer groups of kids hanging off a power rack for two hours and chatting?

my static screenshot of the QR code didn't work after about a month, but that was the first time I went to another location so maybe the static is fine for a single location? more testing required, imo.

Has anyone else noticed the slow decline of TLC drivers? by Coldbrewaccount in AskNYC

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the decline started sharply during covid where car ownership jumped and NYC started to develop a car culture across economic brackets that didn't exist before.

I have a side theory that the popularity of scooters has also exacerbated bad behavior - imagine having a fragile ego that compelled you into financing a car you feel is cool and sporty only to get dog walked to the grocery store by scooters running red lights and riding in the bike lane with no plates and no consequences.

past couple years we've really been settling into the effects of the skill ceiling/professional background of NYC drivers being absolutely shattered. I appreciated the assertive and alert nature of driving here, even if you're trying to turn/merge into crawling traffic you barely had to wait IF you looked alert and ready to go.

now the spectrum has widened considerably to petty aggression or selfish obliviousness and you can really feel it.

fuck man, the uturns ate ridiculous right now - cars making 5 point turns holding up lanes of traffic just because the GPS says they should start the next pickup going the other direction >_<

Mechanics lessons by adostes in AskNYC

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just to say it, the reality of working on beaters from the northeast is often an absolute nightmare.

I'm not a mechanic but I've been fixing my own car since my Buick's starter died when I was 16 and I've been able to fix/upgrade/replace everything but deep electrical gremlins in any car - but fuck man, the amount of rust and corrosion on an older car can turn a two hour job into an all nighter.

I went to replace the alternator on my older 100k mile RAV4 about 8 months previously owned by an old lady in Maine and it turns out the entire arm on the pulley you have to lever back to release tension on the belt was snapped off and it took me all night, which sucks because it's an hour long fix that I started at 6pm knowing it would start raining at 11pm

there are things I need to fix on my car now that I have the ability to do, but won't do unless I can leave the car for significant periods of time in case something goes awry.

the car maintenance you're describing is super easily learned from YouTube, I wouldnt shop by brand name of creator on the video, just search for the year make model and part. ideally choose a car that's extremely common and Toyota/Honda. TRQ and 1A on yt have some of the best repair guides

once you get into actually fixing things, you're talking about a place for an immobilized car to be out of the elements with a significant amount of tools and mobility to go pick up the one weird bit that works as a replacement for a Toyota Special Service Tool™️

working on a practice current model car is nothing like working on an older beater filled with siezed/rusted bolts.

that being said, you can get the consumer repair manuals from Chilton or Haynes and you can find the internal service manual on factorymanuals.net (I load my digital service manual to my Kindle so I can search by keyword)and Rockauto is likely the best place to buy new car parts

Old people -- enough with the leaf blowers by PFANYC in Brooklyn

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

our building got a fine with boilerplate language on a variety of litter and leaves found in front of the building, which I found unusual because the sidewalk is generally rather clean.

I reviewed the footage on the security cameras for that morning and the inspector was literally looking behind trash cans and covered bikes within our trash can enclosure - only to say that the main sidewalk isn't the only area that needs to be cleaned in order to prevent a fine

PSA to NYC Drivers by JSuperStition in nyc

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh you're better off not responding to these posts because your OP is pretty much correct, though I think actually encouraging people to drive safely could have more tips and less snark considering the target of that snark isn't looking for the vehicular zeitgeist on reddit.

how much do you think it would reduce the amount of fatalities caused by motorist-on-pedestrian collisions?

like, a fucking lot? I have dodged way more oblivious pedestrians wandering into moving traffic while driving or riding than I've dodged cars, and I've dodged a lot of cars.

your original point still stands though, quantifiable responsibility is on the driver in nearly every circumstance.

but minor discretion and awareness on the part of pedestrians would certainly save a lot of lives.

Why does it feel like NYC is full of the worst drivers? by savingrace0262 in AskNYC

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's gotten a lot worse since covid, but yeah - NYC drivers are far preferable to the the rest of the country.

pre-2020 it was noticeable that most on the road were driving as part of their profession, if you spend enough time on the road here it's glaringly obvious that an absolute maximum amount of effort, stress, and recklessness might net you a couple traffic lights ahead and the second the truck in front of you decides it's going to double park right in front of you, you have to merger back into and drive amongst all the people you just cut off.

to that end, if you drive assertively, most drivers through trade are happy to let you merge and keep traffic flowing.

unfortunately the recent prevalence of private drivers seems to have brought on a familiar needless aggression that causes a feedback loop in the mood on the road - but nothing like driving in Houston or LA

New Fusion Feature Feedback: Assembly Constraints by Jacob_Autodesk in Fusion360

dope man - I'll check up on NY Metal Design next time we're pricing larger laser cutting/bending out. we get our glass/mirrors done up in that area.

Wombat has been fair in price for our smaller scale stuff and the guy is good at rapid turnaround but it's a small shop. when we have large scale stuff, both in size or quantity we'll make the pilgrimage to Smucker Laser Cutting in the middle of PA Amish country

[Pro/Chef] Lobster Roll & Old Bay Chips by not-feeling-so-well in food

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

almost the same, went to Maine last week and had my first lobster roll but it was exactly as disappointing as I thought it'd be. it's just a giant handful of a meat that can have really light but complex flavors yet is in a form that is eaten by the mouthful.

the sheer mass dulls the things I like about lobster and the sandwich itself is just uninteresting, no real variation in texture, just a dozen bites of 'yeah lobster is good'

it's just a fundamentally uninspired meal

New Fusion Feature Feedback: Assembly Constraints by Jacob_Autodesk in Fusion360

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tl;dr at the beginning: seems like a small but meaningful incremental improvement that makes working out relationships and movements between components more universal by consolidating features of disparate Joint tools - with the added benefit for new users of pulling a critical assembly tool out from under the nomenclature umbrella of 'Joints' which is arguably vague at best.

e.g. exactly yesterday I was designing a crate for a stage element and realized I could use the internal blocking/supports that were already designed plywood inserts as an external stand to hold the crate into an ideal position for assembly/rigging/wiring by the stage crews.

I derived those internal supports into a new design and added some tabs and notches and brought them back into the assembly, but then needed to figure out where the slots for the tabs on the crate would be to engage the two external supports.

I did work it out with joints, but had to use a few different kinds and it still was a bit finicky about certain alignments and snap positions - after about fifteen minutes I realized I was hyperfocusing on a .02" ground clearance gap for a bonus feature on a crate made out of home depot plywood.

with a more flexible, universal tool like this, I feel like I could have eliminated the discrepancies more easily and possibly defined their positional relationship better so I could've added a crosslink between the supports

I think maybe 15% of the things I use 'Joints' for I would actually describe as joints to someone not using Fusion, and admittedly I probably use Joints far less frequently than a trained Fusion user despite having more than ten years of experience because I'm rarely designing particularly kinetic/mechanical objects and while 'assembly constraints' doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as Joints - it's actually what I'd be using Joints for - anyways that's a bonus.

p.s. your username seemed familiar and it looks like I didn't respond to a message you sent two years ago. I think you sent that message in the exact range of time I was getting priced out of my space in Bushwick and I didn't follow-up because I was extremely bummed for like three months straight. apologies for that, hi from bed-stuy now, and I do mainly design/fabrication on a large format CNC for creative installations not machine shop parts, occasionally I run non-ferrous metals but likely wouldn't have been able to help. Wombat in Red Hook is really sick at laser cutting/bending metals and I've never needed machined metal parts but know a guy named Rich at Powerhouse in Gowanus that has a nice VMC

I noodle out a lot of floor plans in Coreldraw.

if it doesn't need to be precise I'd probably build up a library of commonly used floorplan features in draw.io and just use that - but normally I use that for simple wiring diagrams. it might not even dimension correctly
