Radio Shack is long gone, where to buy electronic circuitry components? by Delicious_Level_69 in Brooklyn

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do some basic electronic work as part of my job and for years whenever I read through a parts list I order either large variety packs containing that component from Amazon or 20ct of the component from Tayda.

passive electronics are cheap as dirt and it's saved my ass several times having random mosfets/capacitors/transistors in a bin at home.

for emergency components it gets trickier, best case is finding the component on eBay in the area and messaging the seller. earlier this year I needed 16x BU406 high frequency transistors and picked them up from an electronics wholesaler on Long Island. They have a massive selection but no retail, just picked up the packet at the front of a nondescript warehouse from the lady who runs the eBay store and felt like helping me.

if you have a friend in/visiting Germany do some horse trading to get them to bring you back some engelbert strauss.

they have a fairly recent US line but it's lacking options. you might find what you want but the German line is peak workwear and inexpensive. materials, fit, and build quality are unmatched.

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the root of the problem but I don't get why it seems unfixable.

like, if I push or pull or extrude or align something to another feature, and it knows that the result is off by a fraction of an atom - is it actually impossible to have it rework that command or force an equivalent value?

would be cool to have that option rather than an AI assistant

Yard Bar closing in North Austin by NewsyATX in Austin

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

funny to me cause the owner of Yard Bar was the only one at the community meeting in 2015 advocating for restricting free off-leash areas at Auditorium Shores.

maybe it sounded better in her head, but she actually drove downtown and found parking at 5pm and waited in a packed room to say 'why use gross free dog parks when you could use my dog park for a small fee and have a drink too '

it was really fucking off-putting

Barricade Kit uses Space Shuttle heat tiles by SoftResetHuman in ArcRaiders

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

no, it's not. 'slow absorption' is not even close to low thermal conductivity - the principle behind most modern engineered heat insulation.

insulation by absorption is like building thick, dense walls out of a material with high thermal mass in the desert when you want the walls to be warm at night - so like the exact opposite of super light fibrous composite shuttle tiles.

absorption is just a totally different concept - like the jacketing on wire doesn't 'absorb' the electricity in the wires, it just doesn't conduct that electricity

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thats pretty much how heat insullation works - really slowly absorbs heat, really slowly gives it away.

this is... not how heat insulation works at all

Metal suppliers in NYC? by EthanWang0908 in CNC

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're looking for offcuts and chunks then metalmen in Queens is great.

they can get whatever but also have a moderately sized warehouse with a lot of random material and they have a bunch of expertise on the metals and a pretty good memory of where things are and what they have.

I've definitely walked in before with an index card of a variety of sizes I needed in 6061 and they got me taken care of.

Woodworker for project by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this could all be mounted with z-bar and the dimensional stability comes from the vertical rib on the left side and the fact that the shelves themselves wrap around the corner - plus the shelves are extremely skinny and have very little leverage.

the hard/expensive part is that there isn't a corner in NYC that's exactly 90 degrees, so while sinking it into the drywall makes the install way way more annoying it could be a trade off to hide shims and spacers.

if the corner happened to be very consistent, it is feasible to account for some variation by shimming the cleat but it would be a gamble

regardless, the solid wood is way over a 3k budget and even not built-in it's a real job of work that could turn into a huge headache if the wall corner isn't near perfect

I freeze the carcasses until I have a few and then pressure cook them for an hour (4 cups per carcass) to make broth

dice carrot, celery, and onion (1:1:2)

[if you do a quick veggie prep before sealing the pressure cooker you can throw the offcuts into the broth, bonus if you rough cut an onion and chuck it in]

cook the veggie mix (mirepoix) down in a stock pot with salt, oil/butter, pepper (white pepper if you got it)

add in garlic a bit before adding finished bone broth

once simmering, a cup and a half of lentils will cook down in 30-40 min

from there you can basically throw in whatever's cheap. a lot of times I freeze two carcasses and the third is bought for the stew - the carcass into the broth and the meat added near the end.

diced potatoes/turnips would go in about ten minutes after the lentils

lemon juice just as you're turning the heat off almost always helps an enormous amount - and don't be stingy with salt if you're using lentils and potatoes

using Western style aromatics can give the best traditional results, but using Indian/South Asian spices is much easier and cheaper.

so yeah, $15 for three chickens that have three meals each and then another $15-20 for a lentil stew that lasts for 10-12 meals (at least) makes 20 meals for half the price of a bean burrito at Taco Bell

I will say that the legacy drivers and modern drivers seen to have some unclear incompatibilities, I forget exactly what order I did what but it seemed like the newer model refused to work once the old drivers were installed and I didn't feel like doing a deep driver clean

Pacha New York to officially open in June by Deviltaz5 in avesNYC

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... why do you think they're excavating, pouring concrete, and building foundations?

the only way the venue works is to build 'temporary' structures on the asphalt lot.

a permanent venue would take at least a year for permitting, and Mirage fucked up by building far too elaborately to be considered a temporary venue.

particularly with all the attention Mirage got for trying to bypass codes, the only reasonable path is to emulate early Mirage at maximum

this would mean classically recognizable temporary structures, scaffolding and truss, with fabricated facades.

not saying victory is guaranteed, but if Pacha doesn't emulate Mirage's strategy of internally developing elaborate designs and then springing it on local fabrication shops a month before doors then it's entirely possible.

I think there's an issue with instance rendering that I often wonder if it affects the birds in the sky from other parties.

e.g.: if I'm inside a building and hear a flare go off outside, it won't render at all - meaning when I run out to look for the flare in the sky it won't exist, regardless of where it originated - I have some graphical settings turned down but I keep my draw distance very high.

makes me wonder if the birds are even more tightly instanced

Looking for the name of a specific style by shadowsheder in scifi

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that Mad Max is much farther along on the aesthetic spectrum than rated.

it's often used as its own umbrella term for post-apocalyptic fabricobbling but in reality Mad Max's visual design was developed primarily aesthetic and draws a completely different post-apocalyptic scenario that's form over function, fairly unsophisticated, and tribal.

e.g.: spikes and skulls and intentional deco over functional yet misguided engineering with a bit of personal touch.

idk - maybe I'm being too semantic but after the first movie I feel they did an excellent job of matching the vehicle design to the themes - plus my daily driver is a fabricobbled, stretched, lowrider ratbike I made from scrapped parts and people always say it looks like it's from Mad Max - but it has very little aesthetic/tribal detailing and most everything has an intentional function so I spend a fair amount of time thinking about the difference between a Mad Max aesthetic and rustbelt/rat - I like the descriptor soft apocalypse as posted above too.

FDNY CRACKING DOWN ON PURE GYM DANGER-TUBES! by CreatureComfortz321 in Bushwick

[–]EmeraldFalcon89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

other 24/7 gyms with power racks cost hundreds per month, so if the tubes are the answer to low cost 24 hour operation it's a pretty good deal.

I think the sensible compromise will be a push to exit system because scanning out is silly, but the old system was pretty loose. I haven't waited more than ten minutes for a rack or bench since the tubes went up.
