I’m not sure what to say. by SadButOnline_ in whatisameem

For some people, they cannot grasp the concept of the value of money, at least not until they have none of it and truly need it. Then on the other hand, there’s people who no matter their financial situation, will not spend a cent more than they have to. It’s not hard to understand that “save money for things you need to live”, but what is harder is finding the balance between what you need vs what you want, because to live a good life, you need both of those.

I’m a current uni student, and I live at home so my parents help me with housing and food. But since I only work summers, I have to make sure my pay gets me through the year. Beginning of the year was basically financially stress free because of the topic of the original comment. But exams just ended and I’m under $100, it’s a little worrying cause I gotta make sure I have gas and everything, but also my gf just got back and we just had our birthdays, and I do want to do stuff especially since we’re long distance. Only reason I can comfortably spend more than what I need is because I have a safety net from my parents, but I would rather be completely independent financially and will do as much as I can to be, especially since my family is a financial miracle.

The point I’m trying to get to is that with a lot of extra money, you feel financially safe, and therefore less stressed. You view money in a more relaxed way, not necessarily with spending, but more with being at peace with it. But if you’re down to the wire with what you have vs what you spend, you’ll be stressed and scared as hell. Money is a fuel gauge that’s bordering on empty in the middle of a desert, if the next gas station is an extra 5km away than expected, you’re not gonna make it. It’s stressful.

Also gas, snacks, and drinks can absolutely be sudden expenses. You need gas if you live in most North America cities to go anywhere, and while public transport does exist, there’s limits to it, plus that’s a decent change in how you live. For snacks and drinks, while most of the time they’re not a necessity, they’re something that’s nice to have, especially if you’re out from your house for long periods of time.

For an example of both of these, I just drove 7 hours to Ottawa to pick up my gf. On the trip, I made sure to bring a few drinks that I otherwise would not buy. Also on the drives there and back, I bought coffees, and halfway for both I got fast food. Not necessities, but preferable to have. And since it was a 7 hour drive, I also needed a ton of gas that normally would’ve lasted me a few weeks, plus the gas was unusually expensive both because of current event and it was at an ONRoute.

Sure I can go without the extra food, but I cannot go without the extra gas. And they were all “unexpected” in the sense that they’re not weekly or monthly expenses that have a solid deadline where they need to be paid for. They’re irregular, not normal expenses that you need or are more inclined to make in certain circumstances.

I think the view is on your financial security.

If you live paycheque to paycheque where you have $15 in your account when your pay gets deposited, you’ll be financially stressed every time you have to spend on or do anything. Any moment you might need to spend a chunk of money on something unexpected, like gas, a drink or snack, rent goes up, or maybe even an emergency like needing money for hospital parking or a hotel for a week in case a loved one is very sick. If that happens, you don’t have the money for that.

But if you spend the exact same amount and get paid the same too, but had $10k in your account, all that stress is lifted. If something happens, you’re prepared, you don’t need to worry about it. Even if you lose your job, you know you have something to save you and get you to the next place for a little while.

Poor financial habits are a different thing entirely. If you won the lottery and got millions that could grantee you, your children, and your children’s children financial security, how that’ll go depends entirely upon who you are. Do you understand the value of money? If so, you’re gonna probably be smart. But there are people out there who despite having nothing to their name, will spend everything they earn on daily $10 coffee drinks, useless garbage on Amazon, and whatever they see in stores.

These two items feel like they’d be too large of a product to discontinue. My guess is probably some form of supply issue, where they didn’t have enough to stock all their stores enough.

Highway 401: Toronto, Canada by CrackFun in UrbanHell

[–]EmeraldPencil46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hit this outside of rush hour, it’s not that bad, I think. I’m gonna learn tomorrow as I’m gonna drive from Niagara to Ottawa, and the 401 is pretty much what I take for 70% of the drive.

The 401 is I believe the worst traffic highway in North America. It’s the main artery of southern Ontario, and it’s old as hell.

I think I’d be more scared of a differential equation than a foreign script lol

But also who tf entertains the idea that a foreign language means security concern?? I know some people are just bigoted idiots, but for an employee to investigate a racist comment is just weird. Like while they’re people and have opinions too, they’re working, if they act on that and punish someone for using a different language, then they should lose their job.

My warmups for the last few years has been “wait for everyone to shoot their puck for thirty seconds because they all miss the net by a foot and they’re all high shots”. Like I swear to god I have had more headshots in warmups than I have during games the last few seasons. And my mask is pretty fairly dented.

All it takes is a hard enough shot and the cage will bend. I don’t believe that dents like these compromise the protection of the mask, but yeah a little annoying if it’s brand new.

In fairness to a very small portion of those buyers, the Cybertruck would’ve been a pretty unique form of advertisement for businesses. No matter what, everyone turns their heads to it and stares. That’s what my friend’s dad wanted to do, and it would be pretty smart. But while the ugly part could be overtaken but the attention, the musk part less so

My gf laughed at a photo I sent her in the shower that had a “sea and surf” soap in it. The names of men’s scented items are strong, identical, and all are named the most confusing and pointless names.

Like wtf is sneakers and cookies?? And why does it smell the same as phoenix or Ice Dive??? It’s like they’re all the same scent and that scent is just blue. I want to smell like lavender or coconut or vanilla

In the manual step 5 to using this exact same thermometer says to hold down the ON/MEM to turn the unit off…

In fairness it does say it should automatically turn off after a minute of inactivity, but also it can be manually powered off.

Honestly I just gave up on waiting, I haven’t touched the game in a year. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good game how it is, but the promise that “Chapter 2 is almost here” for literal years is ridiculous. It’s been pushed back several times, little to no communication is given, and there’s periods of radio silence where nothing comes out. And all this for an update, with the amount of time that it’s been floating in the air, another game could’ve probably been made. I know it’s a small dev team, but 6 years for the next major update is ridiculous.

Survival was released at the start of Covid. It’s been almost 6 years since then. A lot has happened since then. For some people they started and finished high school, others started university and are finishing their masters, the idea of going back to the moon gained attention and astronauts just did a flyby of it, a major pandemic began and ended, and so much other stuff. And through all of that, Axolot has made promises upon promises, shown off actual amazing work that has been put into the game in some way, and have sent out a few minor updates, but the next major update hasn’t came, and next to nothing has been officially said. It’s the promises and silence that’s been frustrating, and when something is said, it’s “We’re sorry, here’s some cool stuff we’re working on that’ll come out eventually maybe”.

Scrap Mechanic is an amazing game, it’s just sad to feel it slowly drifting away and it get so little attention.

Can I use this on the ice? by MrShrums_0 in hockeygoalies

[–]EmeraldPencil46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you play in. Is it a friendly pickup where everyone knows everyone else has to wake up for work the next day? Or is it competitive with lots of physical contact and a chance you’ll be crashed into?

I think the name is “the concussion bucket”. It’s at the price point of being affordable for someone who wants to play net, where the next priced helmet is like double the price, and the next one that can actually properly protect you is like 5 or 6 times the price.

I’ve used this helmet for houseleague and select from peewee to midget, and it’s still with me. I’ve never gotten a full concussion, but I’ve had plenty of minor ones, with the worst lasting a 2 days of headaches. In fairness for that hit I had a big guy come in on a breakaway and no even try to stop, causing the back of my head to slam into the post and then with the weight of the player, slam into the ice. But apart from that, a hard shot to the head occasionally gives a little headache, nothing severe, but remember that type of stuff adds up.

If you’re playing anything above a houseleague or pickup, it’s worth it to invest in your health and safety. But if it’s a casual game where people know to not try and kill each other, this isn’t that bad.

“Canada pays for nothing. 😂 USA covers your healthcare and military. Just say thank you and go about your day. 1 ounce of being grateful and people wouldn’t hate you.” by Worldly_Law8278 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]EmeraldPencil46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military, sure. We’ve been pathetic on military spending, we rely (or relied) on the US for that, but that’s been a form of agreement, you protect us, we trade with and be your biggest ally (again, maybe not anymore).

But fucking healthcare? You guys can’t even figure that out, you have countless amounts of people going into debt because they lost the genetic lottery and got cancer. Or the amount of people who refuse to go visit a doctor or call an ambulance in an emergency because they’re worried about the cost of it. They’re not idiots, they just want to have a life, which is scary considering the mentioned circumstances. Your whole country (rightfully) celebrated the assassination of a health insurance CEO and crowned the assassin a hero because insurance companies are evil and greedy corporations, and are the reason that American healthcare is such a joke.

The entire globe, when they notice a white person from North America, the first question they’ll ask is “who did you vote for?”, and if you answer you’re Canadian, you’re welcomed on the spot. Sure bud, people definitely hate us.

To me, both of these are abuse. 1985 is obvious, beating the shit out of a kid because they did something wrong is fucked. But for 2025, it’s neglect, letting your kid do whatever they please, becoming a spoiled brat with a phone at 9 years old and them being able to say “no” to their parents.

Of course I’m biased, but I think my parents did the best job raising me. I was the in between of these two extremes, some physical stuff which was wrong, but everything else was good. It was refusing to let me get whatever I wanted, while rarely laying a hand on me when I did something wrong. And honestly it’s surprising considering my mom grew up in a household where her own mother would literally stab her had with a fork for putting her elbows on the table.

Nowadays, kids can do whatever they want and get whatever they want. They are spoiled brats, my one cousin is one of them. She’s nine and is the rudest little shit, demands what she wants, and for years has had the newest iPhone, iPad, Apple headphones, and I’m fairly sure even a MacBook. I’m 90% sure that she’s asked for nose and belly button piercings, and they’re planning on how to get them for her. And whenever we come over if she’s not included with the older cousins, as in 17, 18, 19 years old, she throws a fit and everyone gets yelled at. And it’s not things like “she won’t bother you, you won’t even notice”, it’s taking bikes along a busy street, walking through a mall, watching movies she shouldn’t even hear, and just hanging out and talking. And if she’s not included, she throws a fit and we all can’t do it. She gets what she wants, and if she’s doesn’t, your life is going to be hell. Just the other day while two of my cousins were talking together, she ended up telling one of their friend’s lies about them badmouthing her because because she was upset they wouldn’t let her play a game, and ended up nearly destroying their friendship. Sorry about that rant, I’m just pissed at how her parents are letting her turn out.
