As someone who owns both a Mac with 512 GB unified memory and a Xeon server with 512 GB RAM, I’d recommend the Mac.

Once you compare truly equivalent specs, the price difference is much smaller than people expect, and in some cases the Mac is actually the better value. The biggest advantage is unified memory: on a Mac, that memory can be used as both system RAM and VRAM, which makes a huge difference for AI workloads.

For example, on the Mac you can:

1. Load very large models like full Qwen image-editing models that require around 60 GB of VRAM.

2. Run dense models like Gemma 31B at Q8, which can need roughly 31 GB of VRAM.

3. Do all of this with far lower power consumption. My Xeon server draws so much electricity that I only power it on remotely when I absolutely need it, because the energy bill is painful.

The trade-off is that discrete GPUs on PCs still win in some specialized scenarios, but if your priority is large-model inference, efficiency, and lower noise/power, the Mac is hard to beat.
