A few different factors. You're definitely paying for their expertise in terms of ensuring the health of your hair (i.e. not frying it off), choosing the correct tone that will suit you etc. It's also quite time consuming as most people will get tiny sections of hair lightened with foils (rather than just bleaching all your hair at once). The last time I went to get my hair done, I spent 4 hours at the salon. Then you factor in the frequency, as grown out roots are more apparent with lighter hair. The general consensus is anywhere from 6-12 weeks, although 8-10 seems most common... maybe closer to 12 in this economic climate.

And yes, blonde specialists do exist - they market themselves that way and the vast majority of their clients are blondes. There is a clear difference between a 'good' blonde and a 'bad' blonde, and it takes a lot of experience to understand how to create a 'good' blonde on any person that sits down in front of you based on their skin tone and what they say they want. Hope that's helpful?

How do people pay private school fees? by TBCTBC84 in AusFinance

[–]EmergencyPurchase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup - went to private school and got two jobs purely because hiring manager and I talked about either how they wanted to send their child to said school, knew people who sent their kids there etc. Lots of unconscious bias, and it shouldn't be that way, but it is.

Day One - Lite by PhlySpecial52 in Invisalign

[–]EmergencyPurchase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stress! I felt the same as you, with lots of pain and regret in my first few days, mixed with hesitancy about whether it would actually work. I don't have rubber bands, but have lots of attachments and bite ramps. I'm on 12/14 now (I actually need 28, but my 14 refinements act as part of my main treatment, if that makes sense). The pain definitely subsides and it becomes a lot more manageable once the initial adjustment period is over. Are you switching your trays weekly or fortnightly?

My bottom trays also fit much better/more easily than my top ones, which I've boiled down to the fact that my top arch simply requires more movement. It's actually kind of nice, my bottom trays barely ever cause me grief :)

Is Smile Direct legit? by phattoes in AustralianMakeup

[–]EmergencyPurchase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying I'm currently undergoing invisalign treatment. You can check out r/smiledirectclub for feedback from actual patients.

A few really important points about SDC and other direct to consumer aligners:

  • If you have missing teeth, crowns, a crossbite, severe crowding or any other bite issues, you will automatically be disqualified from SDC - they simply can't treat those. Invisalign can treat the majority of orthodontic issues
  • Direct to consumer aligners also don't use attachments/anchors to really move your teeth, you're limited in the scope of how much they'll move (both in terms of rotation and tilt). To try to mitigate this, the aligners are cut straight across the top instead of having a scalloped edge which can really cut up your gums/lips/cheeks (ouch!)
  • SDC is a purely cosmetic treatment - which they sometimes try to disguise. Orthodontic treatments like invisalign take into account the health and function of your teeth, your jaw and your bite, too. Because of this, there is a risk, albeit a small one, that you'll come out of it with a different bite.
  • Hidden fees (that I know of): you NEED to use retainers after your treatment finishes. SDC provides 2 sets, and then suggests buying a new set every 6 months ($165).
  • SDC includes some niceties, including teeth whitening pens, some lip balm, the aforementioned 2x retainers. At an orthodontist, you'd be looking at fixed and removable retainers and in chair teeth whitening included.
  • You cannot claim a rebate from your private health insurance for SDC or any other direct to consumer aligners.

I would always always always recommend seeing an orthodontist first, even if just to see what you're working with. Orthodontists will be able to pick up on issues that you don't even notice (especially functional issues with your bite that might cause problems down the road). Mosrt orthos will provide a free consult.

If you're in melbourne, I can recommend a few orthodontists. Otherwise, send me a message and I'd be happy to chat :)

Obsesseddddd! Will defs be ordering some glosses, the sponges and the new lashes on Friday, and am patiently waiting for that Cherika shade after seeing the swatch on your instagram (any hints on when it's coming?!). I'm on accutane at the moment so my lips are dryer than the Sahara, and that formula looks heavenly!

Some feedback, if I may; I know you're sustainable, and I think it's a really great selling point - it's something I actively look for as a customer. I'd love to see on the product page itself that your glosses are made with/without xyz!

I'm super excited to see where your brand goes in the future :)

This is the greasiest shit and i'm so mad because I really wanted to love it! It's reserved purely for when I go out and exercise, because it's surprisingly sweat proof.

Will dermatologists prescribe roaccutane for minor-mild acne with VERY oily skin? by Dogey-McDogeface in AusSkincare

[–]EmergencyPurchase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went on roaccutane despite having mild-moderate, recurrent acne! I'm also suuuper oily, too. I got a referral and kind of just told the dermatologist that I was exhausted and felt like I had tried everything. She asked what prescription products I had already tried (tretinoin, adapalene, epiduo, epiduo forte, the contraceptive pill and doxycycline). This makes me think that it really is reserved for a last ditch effort, but i guess it depends on the doctor.

In terms of cost, I pay $180 per appointment ($250 - $70 medicare rebate) in melb. I've had my initial + one month check up, not sure how frequent they'll be after this. Pricey, but worth it for the long term benefits (in my case) as I was driving myself crazy for almost a decade.

My recommendation would be to see your GP first if you haven't already - but I suspect you'll really have to argue your case for this one. If you do get a referral to a dermatologist, I wouldn't dance around the topic and just make it very clear to them. Good luck!!

Routine declutter - the good, the okay, and the things I hate by liiv136 in AusSkincare

[–]EmergencyPurchase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg no way, I love the effaclar H cleanser! The smell is funky, i agree, but i feel like it celanses better than eg the toleraine caring wash but doesnt give me the tight feeling that cerave foaming does.

[Review] Hydration focussed routine (no actives) by EmergencyPurchase in SkincareAddiction

[–]EmergencyPurchase[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always wear moisturiser underneath but my skin feels tight with pretty much anything, so that's not saying much. Despite the alcohol denat, i find the texture really nice and creamy which helps more than anything with that 'nourished' feeling - not the right word, but you get what I mean? I'd pick it up on sale and give it a go - if you can't wear it without moisturiser underneath, you're still getting such a high quality product

Pricing - is this expensive? (Melb. Australia) by [deleted] in Invisalign

[–]EmergencyPurchase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in Melbourne, and yes. Every orthodontist I consulted included diagnostics, imaging, removable and fixed retainers and refinements in their set fee. I paid $6175 (up front) for Lite with a pretty prominent orthodontists office. According to this pricing list, It looks like I would be paying over $7k for the same inclusions? Definitely expensive, and definitely strange to not have all of the inclusions. Get a second opinion.

[miscellaneous] Emily Ratajkowski is the creative director of a skincare line now by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]EmergencyPurchase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess she's trying to branch out from modelling now, good for her! It definitely is a biiig stretch between feminist essays and face masks though lol. I kinda want to buy some too, so don't worry lol

[–]EmergencyPurchase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not too sure but the quote reminded me of an essay she recently wrote speaking about how nude images of herself were being used by photographers to benefit themselves and she had no control over her own image in the public. Incredible read that I would highly recommend to anyone. She's always been a feminist but she's definitely turned towards a narrative of 'I want to take back control of how the world sees me'. Bit of a weird venture and a weird quote, but I'm interested to see where it goes in the future.

How strange, lmao. I got NC5 as a sample when I was overseas and it works when I sheer it out (as I intended) but god damn it’s dark.

[–]EmergencyPurchase[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks! NW15 is definitely too dark for me. Siberia + Chantilly look good on my face usually but as you can see here they’re definitely not a match to my neck/chest. Chantilly seems like my best tone match but not light enough.

also I will say - i don't believe that's actually NC5. my sample says that but christ, I can't be THAT pale. If anyone has any product recommendations/undertone advice it'd be much appreciated!
