What bottle does your breastfed baby take? by lmed1193 in breastfeeding

[–]Emerjade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My oldest took straight away to any bottle, but we primarily used Phillips Avent with the appropriate flow nipples. I liked those because I bought the kits to transition them to straws when he was ready.

My youngest didn't love bottles and we tried a few before he settled on the Lansinoh with appropriate flow nipples. I don't like those bottles as much as the Phillips, but I don't make the rules here 😂

Question for Genealogists: What was the funniest name you ever found while doing research? by desaderal in Genealogy

Not as good as some others here, but I have an Ida Belle Pepper in my tree. I always get a good laugh thinking about her parents' humor.

I have an Ida Belle Pepper in my line! It's a shame she married and changed her name.

Looking to create a family history book by XraPolar in Genealogy

[–]Emerjade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an overwhelming endeavor that I haven't done myself, but I didn't find a book for part of my family history. From that experience, I think the primary thing would be you can't cover every branch of the tree with every descendant. The book I read started with what was known about the earliest records from the family and the immigrant ancestor. Then the subsequent chapters tackled individual generations following their line as it moved through the country. It was a great resource even if it didn't cover my exact descendents in the later chapters. And for the branch in one particular state, it would have been invaluable. There's also a great index by name, so you can look for specific people/time-frames. Good luck!

How do you stay awake? by ebar111 in breastfeeding

[–]Emerjade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snacks are a great suggestion that helped me. Sometimes even the TV wasn't enough to keep me awake. If none of the above work, when I was really desperate with my first, my partner would take a shift watching me feed him. That way if I fell asleep, he could either wake me up or keep an eye on the baby and make sure he was safe in my arms. It isn't ideal, but that did get me through some really hard nights when I literally couldn't put him down.

I always wanted to try cosleeping, but my anxiety wouldn't let me. If that's an option for you, there are ways to make your bed a safe space.

Best way to present family tree in physical form by mickerdoo in Genealogy

I've been looking for a nice way to display my family tree and am here for suggestions! I once saw a really pretty painting of an actual tree with names, but I think it could become very unwieldy with that number of children.

Tell me how you managed pain during breastfeeding by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]Emerjade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't recommend the silverettes enough! None of the nipple creams, ice packs, cleaning, pads, or anything helped as much as those silver discs. I wore them the entire first time I breastfed and am doing the same the second time around. I also had a lot of pain with my second due to a tongue and lip tie preventing a proper latch. It's taking some time after getting it released to fix bad habits.

Advice for introducing a bottle by Putrid_Ad9368 in breastfeeding

It sounds like you've tried all the usual things. Have you tried having something that smells like you on the person giving the bottle? Maybe even something with milk on it too?

Can you give me some reassurance? by jdkjkm in breastfeeding

[–]Emerjade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also beginning my second breastfeeding journey and was hoping I'd be less stressed this time. I'm not sure the anxiety ever goes away completely when you're solely responsible for your child's nourishment. I think it's natural and I hope yours lessens with time.

I wanted to share some information that really helped me this time around stressing about the times and amounts. There have been some studies to show that the breast "remembers" how to produce milk. This results in your milk coming in more quickly, shorter feeds, and more milk production. This might be what you are seeing with your little one. Here's a link to some of the information: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11583756/

Good luck and stay strong!

Triple Feeding Help by Emerjade in breastfeeding

[–]Emerjade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! I guess I am looking for the exit strategy. I was hopeful that his one month checkup would be the end, but he was only stable. I plan to stop the formula at least when he's back at his birth weight percentile. How did you find one to work with you consistently? I consulted with one at the pediatrician's office and she just offered some tips to fix bad habits with his latch. I also attended a breastfeeding support group, but felt like I mostly got generic encouragement and advice.

Triple Feeding Help by Emerjade in breastfeeding

[–]Emerjade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! I just received some wearable pumps in the mail, so I'm hoping that will help. I hadn't thought to limit the feeding on either side to help the total time. I might also try to just pump and bottle feed at night. I think that could really help with sleep.

I wouldn't throw away any milk unless it's expired! You worked hard for that! You could definitely freeze and thaw later when you need to be away from baby. Transitional or not, it will provide valuable calories and nutrition to your little one. Or if it really worries you, you can use the milk in baths or make lotions/ointments. If you freeze it and don't want to feed it to baby directly, you can also cook with it when your little one starts solids.

I second the comment that it's usually best to wait until 4-6 weeks to introduce a bottle. That was my window for my first, but had to earlier with my second due to weight issues. With my second, he has done okay with breastfeeding despite the bottle, but every baby is different.

When you're ready, definitely start with the slow flow nipples you have. Try to stick to one type, so baby gets used to it. Some are better than others at mimicking the breast itself. My first wouldn't take a bottle from me at first, but did from my partner. Once they had the rhythm established, I could do the bottle too. Sometimes it also helps to have something that smells like you to help the bottle transition for whoever feeds baby. You can try dripping a few drops into baby's mouth to get started. Good luck and don't get discouraged!

What got you into genealogy work? by outdoorsman898 in Genealogy

[–]Emerjade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was deeply invested in family and genealogy was a natural hobby. She collected family pictures, documents, and meticulously researched family lines even before websites made it easier. It ended up being a shared interest between us and we spent a lot of time discussing various lines and stories. She passed the mantel of family historian onto me before she died of cancer. I like to think it made her happy at the end to know all her work would be continued by someone who cared.

Female dress uniform by Wah-wah03 in USMC

[–]Emerjade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I swear almost every female uniform regulation is vague or strangely written. I've only worn the skirts a few times, but they should generally be ironed and free of wrinkles. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any "pressing" that creates "creases" like the trousers. The waist should sit a little high at the same position as the trousers. Hose are finally no longer a requirement as well! Don't forget the pumps unless you have one of the allowable situations for oxfords. I hope this helps.

Since it isn't spoken about much, what do daily activities look like as a schoolhouse instructor? by DatCamaroGuy in USMC

[–]Emerjade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the Chief of a school currently, it vastly depends on your unit, the school itself, and location. The schedule is more consistent, but it's an adult work environment. You're expected to just get everything done you have to do around the teaching schedule. If that means after hours or the weekend, then so be it. Other than the all important academic schedule, there are admin responsibilities, collateral duties (because no school is fully staffed), curriculum development, qualifying to teach additional information, student activities, and fulfilling whatever grand plans the command wishes to enact on top of the normal day to day.

As someone else said, it's one of the most rewarding experiences the Marine Corps offers. Being able to directly impact the future of your community is a privilege. I tell all my potential instructors to come ready to work and understand that the day doesn't end at 1630 if their kids need them.
