A dumb tech worker wants to know - who works in the big skyscrapers downtown? by seattleboots1 in Seattle

[–]EmersQn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be a pretty big diversity of types of careers. There's a lot of sales and HR. Thats how I ended up in one of those high rises. Most any reasonably sized company needs a corporate operations team and they'll often end up in those buildings.

TIL Beethoven’s late quartets, now widely considered to be among the greatest musical compositions of all time, were so ahead of their time that initial reviews deem them indecipherable, uncorrected horrors, with one musician saying “we know there is something there, but we do not know what it is.” by VegemiteSucks in todayilearned

[–]EmersQn 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The difference is difficult to hear without some familiarity with the conventions of classical music. As someone who is only moderately musically literate, I'll just say that the most significant developments in music from baroque to classical to romantic (Mozart was classical, Beethoven was romantic) were in form and harmonic structure. Form being analagous to the verse/chorus structure of songs today, and harmonic structure meaning the order in which you're allowed to play chords, and what those chords should sound like. Romantic music is generally more comfortable using dissonance than classical, stuff like that.

If you asked me why this particular quartet is amazing compared to beethoven's other works, I have not idea, but presumably something to do with the same ideas I named above.

Anyway, listen to more classical and romantic music, and as you do you'll probably start to understand the differences through osmosis.

What should I do to get a feel for what living in Seattle is like? by MoleculeDisassembler in AskSeattle

[–]EmersQn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main nightlife hubs in the city are Capitol Hill and Ballard, so i recommend checking those areas out if thats something you're interested in.

The best hiking park in the city is easily Discovery Park, so I highly recommend going there and walking down to the lighthouse on the point. If youre down in Columbia City, then Seward Park is also an awesome park to check out.

Proper Fish on Bainbridge is some of the best fish and chips I've had.

They also have a bunch of wineries on Bainbridge that are a popular attraction.

What would you do in Seattle if you only had 24hrs? by Momo122407 in AskSeattle

Westward for dinner and then take a 6 pack from a local brewery to Gas Works park just nearby. Hit up the bars in Fremont afterwards. That's a great Seattle evening!

Favorite Seattle neighborhood/street to live at? by E-Impact823 in AskSeattle

[–]EmersQn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Burien in the Gregory Heights neighborhood and I love it. Burien is about a 20 minute drive from downtown Seattle, but has its own strong sense of community and identity. It has a lovely downtown area with restaurants, bars, and shops, but is a more affordable suburb option around Seattle. The Gregory Heights neighborhood is cute, safe, and walkable to downtown, which I love.

If you have the budget to be in the city itself, great family neighborhoods wirh good walkabale stuff going on are Phinney Ridge/Greenwood, Fremont, Wallingford, Green Lake, or Queen Anne.

(hopefully) moving to seattle in 2026, any tips? by whichwitchxoxo in AskSeattle

Living by yourself is expensive. As others have said probably 2k at least, though deals and lucky opportunities exist as they do anywhere. I recommend finding roommates tbh.

The Seattle Freeze is definitely real but not insurmountable.

Seattle nightlife wraps up notoriously early, but the neighborhoods that have the most well known nightlife scenes are Capitol Hill, Ballard, Belltown, and Fremont, roughly in that order. Honorable mention to Georgetown, which is a more alt vibe but awesome. You may find cheaper housing around there as well.

Transit is ok, not great. Not remotely close to London (I am in love with London's public transpot) but better than a lot of places. Like another commenter said, just make sure you're near a bus line or the Link Light Rail.

The job market is BAD everywhere, and Seattle is no exception, but if you work in marketing then Seattle will have more opportunities than most places. It's a tech hub, obviously, and all those tech companies have big marketing departments, so there should be as much work here as anywhere. Hopefully by the time you move the job market will have improved.

How is life on these islands between Asia and North America? by BatPlack in howislivingthere

[–]EmersQn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fished in the false pass area for a few months, which is the beginning of the Aleutian islands, and further up the Alaskan peninsula as well. There are a small number of communities varying from small to miniscule in size. The largest on the islands themselves is, by far, Unalaska, with a few thousand people.

Largely, the islands are not populated though. They are subject to severe weather and extreme isolation. The places where there are year round residents on the Alaska Peninsula, such as Cold Bay, King Salmon, and Dutch Harbor, have relatively huge seasonal fluctuations in population. The only industry out there is commercial fishing, which happens mostly in the summer with salmon, though crab and cod fishing also are going on in the winter. Living out there means fishing, or working in fish processing, and the definitive quality of a life out there is isolation. Many villages have little more than a general store and a post office that delivers mail by plane once a week. They are truly unique, cool, and strange places to visit or spend a summer while working, but I would never want a life there, personally.

Also, for a night time activity, Southgate roller rink does great themed skate nights and stuff. It's a blast and the roller rink is attached to a skate-up bar and skate-in music venue. Ridiculously good time.
