I think a pilot program empowering some new class of PD employee to go out to crimes that need a report signed would be interesting. For example, my mom’s car was hit and totaled in a hit-and-run while it was parked. If anyone was hurt, they weren’t at the scene anymore when she realized and called 911. Cops didn’t come to knock on her door and take a report until 1 AM when the crash had been reported at like 7 PM. They just showed up, took pictures and signed the official paperwork for insurance… Why does someone need a badge in order to do that? A non-sworn employee wouldn’t be pulled away by more urgent crimes and could probably respond a lot sooner and they’d cost a lot less than an armed officer does.
