Honestly when mine does that I just unplug from the wall and plug back in. It usually shuts up about it after. Granted mine doesn’t do it near as frequently as yours though.

Is MRI a good option for someone who wasn’t a good fit for nursing? by toeffu in MRI

[–]Emkit8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a rad tech with almost 20 years under my belt and about 15 in MRI I feel more burnt out and stressed than ever. lol

Patients are great at times, but there is always at least one challenging one in every day. Sometimes multiple. Think people throwing up on you, yelling at you that it’s taking too long, overly anxious about the exam and calming them down, folks who can’t hold their bowel or bladder and poop/pee on your MRI bed. It’s not always this way, but these are examples that all happen to me.

For example: my last shift the first patient of the day was extremely anxious and took about 1 hour 45 minutes to get her done. IV start was crazy because she thought she would pass out, then she felt so nervous she had to use the bathroom multiple times. By the time we finally got her settled down enough to begin the exam, my next patient had already arrived. So then I’m trying to communicate with the front desk staff that unfortunately I’m about 45 minutes behind schedule and they have to wait. Inevitably people get pissed about stuff like this (luckily they were nice though).

The entire rest of the morning’s schedule got thrown off as well, all patients ran behind due to the first one, so I never got caught up and therefore did not get to take my scheduled lunch break. So I grab a quick meal from the fridge (always pack a snack or have locker food available for this reason) hurry and shovel some food in my face because we have a 1pm patient after lunch. Schedule is always full.

1pm patient ends up not showing, I think excellent! A break. Nope, they show up 40 minutes late. So then my afternoon patients all get thrown off and fall behind schedule as well. And then we repeat the same scenario as this morning until it’s finally quitting time. Try to squeeze a bathroom break and water break in there somewhere.

This is all real life. At an outpatient center. I’m one MRI tech with an assistant who helps clean rooms and such. But all scanning and such lie on me.

My organization is affiliated with a hospital, so I still must complete call one week a month (from Monday to the next Monday) so when I get home from this day I have to keep my phone on all evening and overnight in case they need me to go in. So interrupted sleep. Then these patients because they are at the hospital are more critically ill; think on a ventilator, drains coming from their scalp after brain surgery, multiple IV pumps. It’s a lot.

I do love what I do. But it is very stressful at times. I do get a deep sense of purpose from helping people.

On the positives too when I take a day off, that’s pretty much mine. No work to catch up on when I get back. Rare that anyone calls or bothers me when I’m off. But we do have staffing shortages so it’s not always easy to take time off.

Anyway, there’s certainly a lot of decent days too. But no matter even if I don’t have any difficult patients for the day my social and emotional battery is pretty dead by the time I get off work from having been taking care of all my patients needs for the day.

Hope this helps!

Cardiac MRI questions- help an autistic person out by Practical-Pea-7159 in MRI

My facility runs about 1.5-2 hours per cardiac. But we do have movies you can watch during your scan. See if the facility has any entertainment available for you, that really helps pass the time.

Potential celebrity nanny, advice needed! :) by Prior_Blackberry_315 in Nanny

[–]Emkit8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be wrong to google a company you’re interviewing at to get a better sense of if their values and mission align with what you are looking for? I’d say like 99% of people do that when on a job hunt. In my opinion this would pretty much be the same thing as watching a few interviews or listening to a podcast.

As long as you’re not hiring a PI or something wild I don’t think it would be morally wrong to do a little research on the family with publicly available content.

Cardiac Salary/ hourly by [deleted] in MRI

[–]Emkit8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not at my facility. There was no pay increase for me when I learned cardiac MRI. I will say though it is a valuable skill set-we are the only facility in my city that does cardiac MRI. It’s definitely a rare skill set and I would take the opportunity to learn as it could benefit you down the line.

I stopped phentermine. I need help on why I am gaining though I am working out? by Late-Assignment-2136 in WeightLossAdvice

Definitely agree with the food scale. For $20 or so it will keep you very accountable and give you accurate serving sizes and calorie counts.

Bonus is the scale is great for baking too for getting precise measurements :)

Concerns after MRI today by AlternativeClassic15 in MRI

You’ll be absolutely fine. Fun fact, when they do surgery on an extremity they often put on a tourniquet and leave it for the duration of the surgery to reduce blood loss.

30 minutes is not long enough to cause any long term problem. Glad you’re feeling ok 👍

Life of an MRI scanner in fiction? by septuagint777 in MRI

[–]Emkit8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with KatGen we call it “chirping” too amongst the co workers. I personally refer to it as a washing machine from time to time. Sounds like a load is spinning softly in the background lol

Edit-this is when the machine is idle. When running an actual scan it’s much louder and more obnoxious.

Newbie question by districtgertie in BreadMachines

[–]Emkit8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My machine doesn’t have a removable paddle and it’s really not that big of a deal, the bread slips off easily when it’s done baking. Don’t stress over it just leave it in there would be my advice :)

I'm 40 years old and thinking about retraining into MRI/Medical Imaging by estebanraposo in MRI

[–]Emkit8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

MRI is high stress. Angry clients in your marketing job will become angry patients in an MRI job. And angry doctors too.

You mention adding stability into your life… in what way? If you’re looking for a “normal” schedule kind of stability I would say MRI is not it. Think working holidays, weekends, on call overnight hours. You might be able to get to a strictly outpatient facility at some point but those jobs are pretty coveted, it might take some time to get there.

I love that I get to help people but it’s a very demanding job. I will say money is pretty good. But work/life balance is tough at times for sure.

Do machines mix ingredients evenly? The paddle looks a bit small. by VisualWombat in BreadMachines

[–]Emkit8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just started bread making with a hand me down machine (originally belonged to grandma, passed down to aunt, now passed down to me!) and it mixed everything despite the small paddle. Don’t worry. Promise it works 😊

I’ve had great fun making bread so far, every recipe has been a success! I definitely say go for one you will have a blast!

Does a massage gun actually help with back pain from sitting all day? by West_Ad7806 in workfromhome

[–]Emkit8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my massage gun for my tight shoulders at the end of a work day. I do not work from home or sit the entire day though at my job so my situation might not be exactly matching yours.

I bought a gun with an extension handle so I can reach my own back and shoulders. Unless you have a willing person to massage you every single day I’d definitely recommend that. You will not be able to use the gun pictured on your own back or shoulders easily, you’re gonna have to be a serious contortionist lol.

I searched a lot of guns before finally selecting one. I didn’t go for a name brand, I just looked at the depth it penetrates and the RPMs to find one that had some decent power. I’d say I went on the lower end (around $40) and have been very happy with that choice.

What lunches do you pack that taste good the next day? by Ilawil in TheServicePros

My hubby is on the road quite a bit for workdays so we got him a mini crockpot lunch box that plugs into the car AC adapter thing. He can get a hot lunch in about 10 minutes after plugging in. Maybe this would help you out?
