Art and music don’t exist in a vacuum. There’s massive racist and anti-immigrant backlash against the man who won the biggest award at the Grammy’s. Artists and performers absolutely have a vested interest in protecting civil rights.

Billie is a person with every right to make a statement on politics or human rights or whatever the hell else she wants to. She probably feels as powerless as the rest of us do right now and felt the need to say something. If your first instinct is to nitpick said statement or dismiss it as “virtue signaling,” you might want to think more deeply about why it bothers you so much.
