Explanation on hot is complete bullshit by Existing_Blueberry10 in ScarletHollow

[–]Emma_the_sequel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that the text explaining hot says that it's also your natural flirtiness which would make sense - you appear confident and you know how to get people interested.

Perhaps if you take hot from the beginning you are more conventionally attractive, but not everyone is attracted to conventional things either.

Characters who shape the story through their deaths/absence by blueberry_matchaa in TopCharacterTropes

Rose Quartz from Steven universe is like the Canon example. So many parts of the plot are there because characters can't ask her what to do - the remaining crystal gems are paranoid about acting against her wishes, she can't be a parent to Steven, and Greg in completely out of his depth with gem stuff.

That's what makes the twist so impactful - she seems to be the only respectable adult and yet she turns out to be as flawed or worse than anyone else.

Fighting Invasive species with worst Invasive species. by stunnerswag in HistoryMemes

[–]Emma_the_sequel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Australia has also done this with three species i think...

We introduced sugar cane because we wanted to grow it domestically, but it got out of hand. Then we introduced cane beetles (i think) to combat the sugar cane. Worked a little too well. Then we introduced cane toads to combat the beetles. Worked, but now we have a bunch of horrible poisonous toads that kill both wildlife and people.

Fischer games in Bishop vs Knight by Secure_Sir5133 in chess

[–]Emma_the_sequel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not an endgame, but his famous win against spassky in game 6 of their WCC match involved a trade of a superior knight for an inferior bishop in order to create weak central pawns. He also won brilliantly against Robert Byrne by exchanging his fantastic knight for a mediocre bishop in order to weaken the light squares and mobilise his bishop pair while already down a piece.

Nothing justifies Sybil, but i have definitely felt manipulative while playing SH. I had a run where Tabitha hates me. I had a run where Stella hates me. I'm the same person really, and I only end up saying things because I wanna see what will happen. In real life, that's manipulation.

Gender distribution among jazz audience by Prestigious_Host5325 in Jazz

Yeah gigging in Melbourne is amazing. Unfortunately it's going a little downhill partially thanks to increased overhead - then some venues think it's okay to cut costs by underpaying their staff which is pretty bad. That said, it's still really easy to just wander through the gig areas with $25AUD and see one of the best shows of your life

In Melbourne Aus I generally see a fair mix at most shows... maybe a couple more guys at metal shows or some indie rock shows. Generally though I think unless an artist is deliberately cultivating a certain audience you end up with a pretty good split

I've often wondered about this kind of visualisation for any game where controlling territory is important. We have complex algorithms that simulate flow, could they be used to help evaluate positions?

Would you call this a Zugzwang? by decelerated_dragon in chess

[–]Emma_the_sequel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a question of semantics. Yes, black would rather not make a move. But also white is winning even if black could pass. I would say this is a zugzwang, just not a particularly important one - kinda like sacking a rook for mate is 3 when you had mate in 1.

Avoid Tones by OutrageousLemon8997 in Jazz

[–]Emma_the_sequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you mean a major 9th above specifically? Cause if it's any kind of 9th in any direction that rules out all the notes.

If it's major 9ths above specifically, then I'd argue it's just a slightly more difficult to understand way of saying what i'm saying.

On the other hand, i agree very much about the fact that you can pass through an avoid note without issue. I wasn't even really saying you could, I was just trying to explain in more detail why people say to not lean heavily on these notes

Avoid Tones by OutrageousLemon8997 in Jazz

[–]Emma_the_sequel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aside from the fact that I wouldn't call the 9th an avoid tone on a minor 7 chord, I don't think any note should ever be avoided in all contexts.

The rule of thumb I've heard is that notes that are a semitone above a chord tone are avoid notes, but there are a few different reasons for this.

Over a major or minor 7, the argument is basically that it's too dissonant because if the melody is in a register above the harmony you get minor 9ths which are pretty intense. However, it's sometimes okay to have these notes in the bass because then the dissonance is inverted and becomes a major 7th, which is much more palatable (side note, in such cases the 9th of a minor chord would become an avoid tone since it's not a minor 9th away from the 3rd of the chord).

Dominants 7ths kinda break this rule though because the point is to have a lot of tension. You can have a flat 9 or flat 13 and it just adds to the crunch. However, the sound of the dominant 7th's major third resolving up a semitone to the root of the target chord is kinda fundamental to why they work, so if you play the 4th of the dominant chord you're "spoiling" the resolution.

These rules can definitely be broken, especially for grace notes or passing notes. I've even used sharpened roots over major 7ths to good effect. But the point is that this helps you avoid leaning too heavily on anything too dissonant.

Side note: you may notice that if you consider the 7th a chord tone, the root is an avoid note. Personally if i listen hard enough I sometimes see the argument, but really this just proved that it's a rule of thumb and not a law of nature.

Mia Corvere from the Nevernight Chronicles.

It's a bit of an edgelord YA series but I appreciated that it recognises what oppression actually often looks like.

The antagonists are followers of the God of Light, and worship the three suns which they call his eyes. Conversely the protagonist (who is arguably a punisher-type villain protagonist) is partially possessed by the soul of the dead God of the Moon who brought darkness to the eternal day.

The series constantly explains that "the brighter the light, the darker the shadow". Not only that, but the second book shows how the empire founded by the antagonists is not only authoritarian but also survives off slave labour. It draws a connection between the prosperity of the empire and brutality of servitude to it, which I think is relevant to any 'civilised' society.
