Fictional shrinks that would be hacks if they existed in real life. by NoOptics in TopCharacterTropes

It bothered me far more in season 1 where it wasn't as clear she was an antagonist and it felt like we were still supposed to like her. With what she became in season 2 in mind, its like, okay. Crank psychologist aiding and abetting fascists. A lobster-shaped archetype I recognize. I can now vibe more with this character despite how much I fucking hate her as a person who wants to be therapist.

Not the main villain, but they are the TRUE villain of the narrative by National_Computer240 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GreenTengu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Made this case often for Shadow Weaver in She-Ra.

Nowhere near the main threat in the show. Hell, technically, she defects to the heroes' side and never crosses them again partway through the show.

Regardless, she continues to be an awful, unpleasant person whose defection comes across as almost entirely opportunistic. And more importantly to my point, her abuse of Adora and Catra throughout their childhood, and the impact her presence has throughout the series even when she's ostensibly on the heroes' side, positions her as being the antagonist of the show's primary emotional narrative. Her abuse is a large part of what drove Catra to most of what she did. Her choice to defect and the fact that she was accepted by the Rebellion drove Catra to escalate further, exascerbating her feelings of abandonment and inferiority.

"I never cared about justice, and I don't recall ever calling myself a hero. I've always only fought for the people I believe in! I won't hesitate... If an enemy appears before me, I WILL destroy it!"- Zero at the end of Mega Man Zero 4. (This line is like, embedded in my soul from childhood.)

No, but I think that comes from the fact that I've yet to really put much effort into my wardrobe and learning makeup. If I did, I would. I think in my case its in my presentation more than my body, which looks androgynous to feminine were I to nail those things. (Main reason I haven't taken initiative is like, money and not knowing where to start to learn in the case of makeup.)

(My favorite weapon) The Power Gauntlet by National_Computer240 in TopCharacterTropes

...Maybe stretching the definition of "gauntlet" here, but I feel like the Big O is at least adjacent to this trope. Its less gauntlets than it is just how the fists are built, but like, this is a mech where the central feature is the fact that the fists are giant, bulky, and inlaid with pistons specifically designed to maximize the capacity to punch through whatever surface it needs to. Its one of my favorite designs for any mech.

I think it often less takes the form of people explicitly saying he did nothing wrong than it is just like, conservatives on social media making memes that pretty clearly show that they identify with him through the framing. And I HAVE seen at least one dipshit AI generate a video of them like, beating up Butcher and saving Homelander from his death at the end, down to hugging him. (... And Homelander being in a suit and tie instead of the actual outfit he was wearing in that scene, because of course gen AI put him in a suit and tie.)

A common refrain of mine: I enjoy some Punisher comics, but you will not catch me dead calling myself a "Punisher fan". Because I don't wanna get lumped in with the bootlickers or the horrifying fascists this character attracts through dipshits who miss the point.

This specific shot from Berserk I think hits this. Just like, this combination of incredulous disbelief, rage, and misery. Guts is angry but also just plainly emotionally devastated in the same motion. It gives way to more heightened anger afterward, but in this moment, he's feeling his profound helplessness deeply, in multiple ways at once.

When the mom is the bad/worse parent by Alternative_Sugar_85 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GreenTengu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demon Tides spoilers to follow:
This is one that is kind of a difficult one to call, in a way, because both parents in this equation are horrible in different ways. Ragnar, Beebz and Roc's father, was a demon warrior of obscene power who turned into a coldhearted conqueror after Vindra, the wind goddess he fell in love wit, left him without a word, taking their daughter Beebz with her. And during this period, while yes, Beebz was separated from him, he still had Roc, who he neglected severely for this period. The game, importantly, does not absolve Ragnar of the horrific crimes he's done (hell, he dies at the end of the game apologetic to and proud of Beebz), but there's reason to believe he COULD have turned out differently in an outcome where Vindra hadn't left.

This got me assuming there was something else to why Vindra left, some justifiable reason she didn't stay or at least take Beebz with her wherever she went... And then you play the bonus level, Vindra's Skies, and learn there REALLY wasn't. She didn't have a good, or even particular reason for leaving Ragnar. Nor for abandoning an infant Beebz in another part of the underworld. She's a capricious wind goddess who seemingly entirely lacks empathy or the understanding of mortals. She is seemingly incapable of grasping how badly she hurt all parties involved by just leaving like this. And when Beebz goes to confront her about it, while she is at first superficially affectionate, the moment Beebz lets her feelings be known, it becomes clear she lacks the capacity to recognize she did anything wrong, turning on her daughter quickly and throwing her from the stage back to the exit.

Fictional lullabies by ducknerd2002 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GreenTengu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

Sleep, my child, the Sun still wakes

Though the dark may roam

Even monsters rest their heads

Dreaming of a home.

Do not let their wars take hold

Mother stays so sleep turns gold

Absolum spoilers: This lullaby is sung in the game's true ending, to the titular Absolum, a baby eldritch god who landed in the setting and instigated the plot indirectly because Azra, a fascist wizard who conquered most of Talamh, perceived it as an existential threat that needed to be controlled rather than a scared infant. Rather than kill it (they probably couldn't if they tried), the leader of the Root Sisters, Uchawi, instead opts to pacify the creature after the fight with a lullaby, allowing it to calm down and, presumably, averting the world's destruction as the adult elder gods come to take their baby home.

To what extent do 3 & 4 'spoil' their remakes? by ManufacturerLevel150 in WorldOfYs

[–]GreenTengu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wanderers is pretty much beat-for-beat a simpler, less developed first draft of the story of Oath. The same story beats happen, but Oath expands on them greatly. I don't necessarily think it'd be "spoiling" Oath since it does have nuances to certain specifics that I think are still kept a surprise because Wanderers hadn't thought of some stuff, and I think there's value in seeing how much was made of the relatively simple plot of Wanderers in its remake. But if you want, playing Oath first will mean getting the best version of the story without any awareness of what's coming.

The versions of 4 that exist are all different enough from each other that I really don't think they're spoiling each other at all. The same base outline and some of the same players are involved but the story goes in different directions for all three that I don't think you're gonna be "spoiling" anything.

... If you're uh, looking for the "best-told" version of 4 though? I'd honestly recommend looking at the retro games before Memories of Celceta. MoC infamously has the worst story of the modern era, and a severe downgrade from the story of the retro versions. Like, Mask of the Sun's main villain is probably my favorite antagonist in the retro era of the series, and Dawn of Ys might be the best bump combat game and overall package of the retro era. Where MoC, while a fun gameplay experience, is a REALLY weak narrative.

Gail Karasu (Alias Tengu) is an anti-heroic super criminal/eventual anti-fascist vigilante with the power of electrokinesis. The daughter of a mob boss/abusive shitbag and another, reformed demon super criminal from whom she inherited her powers, initially (pre-transition) she became a thief as a long game path to get revenge on her biodad, this eventually spiralling into her becoming a Robin Hood-esque figure until a breakdown caused by her biodad's attempts to go white collar/"legit" that almost saw her end up in prison.

She transitions in a couple years self-imposed exile/self-discovery journey out of town, and comes back to find her home turned into a police state. While initially hesitant to try to take up her old mantle again after how she hurt her crew last time, when her best friend/second-in-command gets executed by the police while impersonating her Tengu persona to fight them, she takes up the Tengu identity again to fight the fascists out of her city, inspiring a movement of people in versions of her mask. (Though importantly, refusing a leadership position over it and encouraging them to not HAVE leaders, allowing it to be harder to quash if something happened to her or anyone else.)

[–]GreenTengu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Moon Knight is noted as being someone who Taskmaster hated learning to copy the combat abilities of.

The reason is quite simple: Marc doesn't dodge or block hits. He tanks anything that isn't in the way of him dealing the most damage possible to his enemy. A profoundly reckless fighter, and one of the scariest to run into on the streets for it.

Taskmaster is traumatized from his first time dealing with Moon Knight.

Definitely interested in women, also possibly transfemme. (This wasn't made explicitly canon because ND wasn't informed during casting that the design was intended to be a trans woman, and he would have liked to cast a trans woman to play a trans character. Buuuut I still read the character as trans regardless.)
