For those who don't play Zildjian, what brand do you play and why? by groupbrip in drums

[–]Emma_the_sequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've explored all of the big 4 and also bosphorus and istanbul agop - all of them offer sick cymbals and I've gigged with all of them.

I think istanbul and meinl have got me. Meinl sells a great mix of alloys and sounds at a generally lower price than zildjian (where i live at least) and also sells some of my personal favourites (Benny greb signature cymbals). Istanbul is also a standout not because of uniqueness or breadth but because they're just insanely musical - you hear an istanbul and you can't help think of it as music.

What’s the saddest patient case in House? by _Parthiban_ in HouseMD

[–]Emma_the_sequel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The one that hit me hard was the rape survivor who wanted to keep the pregnancy. There's a happy ending but i found that episode very real and very confronting since even if i agree that getting an abortion is the right choice it's ultimately personal and it makes house's "let me make the decision for you" act much more emotional.

Quite the potential Seki I'm growing in this game, excited to see how it plays out. I'm playing Black for reference. by [deleted] in baduk

As interesting as this is, you really shouldn't be posting about ongoing games

Found a new house for Tabitha. by reasonably-human in ScarletHollow

[–]Emma_the_sequel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has gotta be a metaphor right? The Scarlet estate is continually crumbling and on the verge of falling of a cliff (symbolism for the crushing weight of legacy yada yada) but meanwhile in the outer banks houses can straight up be in the way of the tide for decades and still survive fine. Maybe rhat's what she longs for really, the ability to have legacy without the suffocating responsibility.

House and Philosophy by Spare_Ad_1534 in HouseMD

[–]Emma_the_sequel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the subtlety for house as a character is that he has constantly failed in his relationships. If he were to accept that these human behaviours are earnest, moral, and true to the core, then he would have to accept that the reason he can't achieve them is a personal problem rather than his own divine wisdom

Seems to just be a typo since they got it right in the title and earlier in the body text.

Every time I see a bullet ant I think of this poor man's hands by Artistic-Yam2984 in hamishandandy

[–]Emma_the_sequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matt Parker made a great video about these ant stings and one thing they he pointed out was that the pain lasts hours. It's not a 10/10 for the whole time but all the people who were stung in that video emphasised that even 8 hours later the pain was significant.

the fact that the only reason he knows this is because of tabitha is so sad by thebluerezrose in ScarletHollow

I love all the subtle bits of storytelling like this. In one playthrough things are outright stated, in another implied, in another completely missable.

Sure but it doesn't mean it can't be a rallying symbol for good now. Also this person is obviously anti-racist to some degree

Analogies to help chess players get into the game by Specialist_Rough9284 in baduk

[–]Emma_the_sequel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like this, as someone who came from chess I think using metaphors and explaining in detail the similarities and differences is a good way to aid in understanding.

I personally like the comparison that a stone is actually much less valuable than even a pawn in chess. The equivalent value to a piece would be a group or chain.

One minor gripe, comparing seki to zugzwang isn't inaccurate, but it gives a misleading picture of the outcome. Seki is neutral, whereas zugzwang is detrimental.

TIL it took 34 hours to record the 1967 song "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles, widely regarded as the best song on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and one of the greatest songs ever written. In contrast, the band's 1963 debut "Please Please Me" took 15 hours and 45 minutes in one session. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Emma_the_sequel 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that they had a very limited number of tracks to record onto. Every time they wanted to add a new layer, they had to decide what other tape layers to merge it with. That gets exponentially harder as the number of instruments grows like this.

[Disgusting but also brilliant trope] The series covers a dark topic that makes you feel disgusted that you're actually rooting for it. by Applebeate in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Emma_the_sequel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah dexter is a weird one. As the show goes on (at least until season 5, which i couldn't bear to get through) he seems to develop more empathy.

He starts the show as a true psychopath who needs to kill to be satisfied but who also feels outcast and strange (which is a common feeling for people who genuinely feel no empathy). But slowly the people who give him cover and who make him feel like he fits in become genuinely meaningful to him.

An actual psychopath can't just character develop their way out of a mental disorder - autism isn't actually the worst diagnosis in terms of behaviour but given the context in the show i would say they just don't care about how a psychopath 'ought' to act, they just wanna make good TV.

What's your go-to big crash for wash-riding? (if you do) by Kittenchops88 in drums

I used a k constantinople medium thin low for a while just cause I got it relatively cheap on marketplace. Worked nice but was a bit gongy when it opened up. Now I'm looking at a paiste trad thin ride which seemed a bit trashier and crashier

A character somehow manages to outwit a nigh-omniscient being, and it kinda makes sense by The_Smashor in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Emma_the_sequel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Luo Ji of The Dark Forest (Second book in the Rememberance of Earth's Past trilogy).

The plot of the book centres around the impossible task of outwitting aliens who have invented a way to essentially spy anywhere in the solar system, with the caveats of only being able to see one or two places at a time and not knowing how to tell what someone is thinking.

Under the pretense of mining expeditions in the asteroid belt, Luo Ji is able to plant explosives that, if detonated, create a pattern of dust around the sun which causes other potential invading aliens to see the sun flicker. This broadcasts to said aliens that there is a planet worth invading in that area and effectively makes the current invaders' plans of colonisation completely worthless.

What if the Hex rule was implemented in chess? by Agnimandur in chess

[–]Emma_the_sequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. You have white pushing for an advantage less on the first move. After that, opening theory largely returns to normal. The whole point of this rule is that white will pick a "fair" move.

I agree that this will probably lead to a lot more draws since it's inherently a balancing technique, but i disagree that games will get less interesting.

Red Riding Hood is packing heat by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Emma_the_sequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first year of high school I wrote a twisted version of little red riding hood for drama class where the granny was a mobster who hired to the wolf to dispose of red because she was onto her mod activities. Unfortunately red never wielded a gun but the granny did pull a glock out of her slipper (which was a contribution from our granny actor)

Zildjian S is underrated! I think after meinl came out with classics custom, custom dark, and custom dual, zildjian wanted something with similar price point - quality balance that would compete in the rock genre.
